I just upgraded my existing O2 contract over the phone and the customer services guy offered me free reboxed iphone 3GS 16GB for £32.26/month on 18 months contract. It includes 600 mins + 500 texts + unlimited internet and wi-fi.

O2 do exactly the same tariff normally for £34.26/month (£2 more) and charges £184.98 for the 16GB iphone 3GS.

The total savings in the span of 18 months works out as £184.98 + (£2 X 18) = £220.98. To me, its a nice O2 loyalty reward.

The guy defined reboxed iphone as very similar to new. Basically its a returned product from customers who sent it back within 14 days. O2 then changes the front and back cover of the phone and re-installs the entire software and puts it into brand new packaging.

He also offered me 32GB iphone 3GS version for free on £34.26/month tariff.

So you turned down a 32Gb 3GS for the sake of £36?.....

I'll let that sink in....

done with the facepalm yet?

Anyway, they didn't offer me (nor most folks) anything remotely like this on upgrades, O2 have recently become useless in that dept offering nothing but the standard tariffs/handset costs (it's well documented) Do you spend a lot on your bills by any chance?

NB/ I've not voted either way as it is strictly speaking a good price but very limited & slim chance of getting hold of one.

Where to start.

Right...had exactly the same offer from 02 as i could upgrade at the end of December. Basically what they are actually offering is a second hand iphone (no two ways around it, there've been returned by customers and have been opened - hence the reboxed - so these are second hand) for exavtly the same cost per month, just on a 6 months shorter contract (18 months rather than 24).

02 have basically screwed there iphone customers over, they admitted on the phone that due to the deal they have signed with apple they can not offer discounts on the phones or contracts.

I even had a manager from there "Retention" Department (there's a laugh in that name) ask why i felt 02 should offer its customers anything anyway. When i tried to point out, well basically cause were paying your wages - no customer = no business = you out of a job, i got told if i mentioned her wages she would hang up.

Thanks to the companys attitude towards it customers I voted the best way possible and walked to vodaphone.

6 months @ £35 = £210 extra that you're forced to pay in a 24 month contract compared with 18. A brand new 3GS 16gb retails @ £440 hence the need to pay more over the term to pay for the phone

So for having a second hand iPhone you have £210 less compulsary line rental to pay.....

I don't understand why so many people seem to think they can get an expensive smartphone on a short contract for a reasonably low price without a catch.

Just tried calling 02 as I am up for renewal.
All they could offer me was 16gb 18 Months on £35 per month - £97 charge
32gb 18 Months again £35 per month - £175 per month.

Tried blagging the offer which people got above & they said they can't discount. What number did everyone dial?

Thanks

personally think this is a very good deal think some get a bit too **** about refurbs and returns 99/100 they are perfect condition and making a 180 saving on the phone makes it worthwhile

well done to the OP, thats all i can say, but cant really call it a deal

I have browsed this site for a long time but signed up today so I could post and say thanks to the OP. I upgraded with o2 last night - I went through to the retentions team and after a lot of negotiating (I was on the phone for nearly 30 mins!) I got the following:

- free reboxed 32GB 3GS white iPhone
- 18 month contract
- £35 per month
- 600 cross network minutes, 500 texts
- unlimited o2 to o2 calls
- unlimited data/wifi

They were trying to get me to buy applecare at £59 which extends the warranty to 24 months rather than 12 but in the end dropped this. They also offered the same deal as above but with a 16GB iphone at £31 per month. I have been an o2 customer for years but not sure if this made any difference - my average bills are around £20-30 per month.

@ misshappy
I am glad it helped! The reason i posted this was to let people know that this kind off negotiations can be done with O2, voted hot or cold, i am not really bothered, as long as people see it!!...

They offered me exactly the same deal as urs as well....but for 16GB version, they didnt go below £32.26 for me!....gud luck with the iphone!

I got the same deal as misshappy but hardly had to negotiate at all:

I was offered a new 16gb free on 24mth @ £45 a month or the same with a reboxed handset but on an 18mth contract.

Said 'a friend' had been offered the deal OP quoted and was told I'd need to speak to a 'specialist team'. Got put through and was immediately offered a reboxed 32gb free on 18mth £35 contract (weirdly they said they couldn't offer anything on the 16gb).

So, that's a 16gb @ £45 a month or a 32gb at £35 a month? :o

Needless to say, my 32gb i-phone will be delivered tomorrow morning!

Thanks for the heads up OP - I tried upgrading around 6 months ago and got nowhere so went onto £15 simplicity to bide my time. Looks like O2 might be starting to panic a bit over Vodafone so could be a good time to get a deal out of them.

Hi Can anyone help me with this as I must be doing something wrong. I have spoken to them again on 202 & was told the same as I was told above.

I was told the only way I could get the offer is to give them a mobile/account number of someone who got a deal. If someone could PM I promise I won't stalk them!!!!

Thanks in advance

@ jezzuk
couple of questions:
- how long hav u been with o2? and wht are your monthly bills like?
- did u ask abt reboxed iphone while talking to them?
- who did you speak to - upgrade dept? or cancellation dept?

When i called 202, i pressed option 2 and option 2 again, and spoke to cancellation team, instead of upgrades team.

...which is £180 more over an 18 month contract than taking a reboxed one?

@jay_zone....£45/month anyway?? haha....dont u think there is a difference between £32.26/month and £45/month....if you cant work out let me help you - there is a diff of £12.74/month....over an 18 months period its a saving of £229.32 (which can pay for my car insurance for a year lol)....

Thanks a lot to OP! I have just went for the 32GB IPhone 3GS for 35 pounds per mth for 18 mths. I think this is a great deal and am very pleased. I was also only on the 10pounds Simplicity deal but have been with o2 for about 6 yrs if that might have helped. Also got offered O2 Home Broadband as part of the deal but am already with BT so didn't need it. Really great deal though so thanks to OP - don't know why this is cold!

Just got a 16gb 3GS for £15 on a £31 a month 18 month 600 min / 500 text / unlimited internet contract. I'm happy, 32gb is £35 a month but I would rather keep the bills down even though it's only an extra £70 odd pounds over the period. This way I should be out of contract just as the next edition of the iphone gets down to a reasonable price ; )
