I got one of these today. However, I placed the order on December 2nd, so if you order now, it may not arrive before Christmas.

The instructions are poor, but you can get an idea of what you need to do to get it to work from the support messages on the dealextreme site. For instance, to set the date that is shown on the video, you need to save a text file with the date into one of the directories on the USB disk when the camera is switched off. Then when you switch the camera on again, the time is reset.

It only records videos. The size is 352x288 pixels. The picture quality is fine considering its from a lens that is ~ 2mm in diameter.

These are the instructions from the CD:

Video recording pen applications: A. public security law enforcement records B. Attorney collects evidence C. Reporter special occasion interview D. stealth surveillance video
Video recording pen function operating instructions

I had a mad neighbour once who i would have loved to record with one of these !!

As a regular customer of Deal Extreme I would advise that you may have to wait upto 4 weeks for your item to arrive.

Sometimes you will have it within a week - other times.... (well put it this way I have been waiting for part of one order for nearly half a year now).

Just a heads up for those who havent used them.
#5
that is so cool, heat added!!
#6
Wow, I need one of these just don't know what for yet, I am sure it will come in use :) haha
#7
I bought one of these early last year

The quality isn't great (mine actually broke when I first used it but DealXtreme gave me a new one for free) but it does record some decent quality video

a fun little gadget which is relatively cheap for what you get

Hehe, would be good in this case :L

But as alot of people have said about the delivery :/
Still hot though.

I also bought this pen for filming sex :w00t:, and it broke after a few days (the pen that is). It is cheap but absolutely **** qualty. I can confirm that it takes decent quality video for such a low price WHEN IT IS WORKING. Only joking by the way..
#11
The quality is surprisingly good...

I bought one of these shortly after DX first got them (at almost double the price!)

I did a quick video using it back then and posted it on youtube to demonstrate the picture quality - not sure if i'm allowed to post the youtube link here though?

Ah see someone has just posted another link now anyway ^_^
#13
i think it's fine for sub £15 but with so many people having a video capture feature on their mobiles these days would you really use this pen over them?
#14
I bought one Christmas on a deal on here, and it never worked...
and frankly... there not that very well built, fell apart easy enough.

never bothered sending it back or getting replacement... too dam far!

didn't think they would even warrant a exchange or replacement?

DX will replace items, I have had replacements from them before. Low value items they normally do not even need returned first (though in the case of a $120 laser they did want it returned, they even paid for my return postage).

It has probably been too long for you to get a replacement now, but it's worth remembering for the future.

I received one of these as a birthday present and must say I found the uses for it somewhat limited due to my own sense of morals and honesty.

However I have used it as an additional record of mystery shopping assignments. Much more inconspicuous than waving a camera phone around.

cost wise not bad. but this one looks better:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18088

The lens is positioned so you can cliup it to your shirt pocket and film as you go! Rather than pointing the pen at them like this one! Plus its VGA quality!
#18
So cool! Just ordered one.
Heat added.
I know that DX take a while to deliver, but I am quite prepared to wait a little while; personally I am quite happy with their service considering the prices (low) & delivery costs (none).
#19
DealExtreme takes forever to deliver, I almost forgot what I ordered the last time, but they are cheap and not the best of quality..
#20
cool, or should i say hot

From the comments, I'm not convinced that the extra resolution acutally makes for a better picture. In the same way that alot of so called 8MP camera out now give worse results than some 3MP cameras. And while it has more memory, its actually redundant as the battery runs out before you've even got to 2Gb.

It is basically the equivalent of a phone video camera, but still quite useful. I bought one to mount to the front of my bike to get some footage of my exploits on two wheels. I didn't want to be spending a few hundred on a proper camera in case it gets destroyed. And as long as I can figure out how to mount it I am expecting quite decent results.

I think I paid £16 for mine, but as with everything from deal extreme, the prices do seem to slowly drop off over time. Just look at the Nintendo DS cards now, compared to a couple of years ago.

The lens is in exactly the same position in both - I have the 2gb version, which is all you need as the battery doesn't last past about 2hrs, which is about 1gb of film.

However the one you noted is a better resolution camera - 307,200 pixels (640*480 px) rather than 101,376 pixels (352*288 px)

This is for covert filming, where you wouldn't want to get out a camera phone...:whistling:

This has been posted before at a lower price abot a year ago when I got mine and the dollar/pound ratio was much better. But £14 is still good - haven't seen anyhing similar for this price.

Build quality is poor and some people have had problems.

Actually, looking at that clip, the colour saturation is astonishingly good. I'd buy one but I can't think of a reason to own it. The quintessential boy-toy dilemma.

This is the 4GB version for $22 ... Supose you'll be better off buying this one?
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18087

One question though, when you record a clip, then record another seperate one, does it overwrite what you've previously recorded? or does it just create an additional file so to speak? Cos if it does overwrite then there is no point getting the 4GB.
I'm not sure if I've explained myself correctly ?

I am getting married in May and currently costs are spiralling out of control what with the credit crunch and all. I also have a future wife who is insistant that we get our ceremony filmed for posterity - my question for people who have this item, is would it be suitable as a cheaper alternative to film a wedding ceremony?

Seperate file for each new recording. It doesnt overwrite existing files and it can also be used as a usb portable drive for any files.

Dont know about the wedding day, but would definately be ok for the wedding night

DX is quite good, but it does take some time to arrive.
#32
Definately NOT wedding quality
#33
ok this looks pretty good can someonbe tell me is the camera in the end of the pen? Also, for those who have had theirs come apart has it revealed the electronics and does it look like it would be easy to remove the gubbins (for attachment to RC Helicopter :) )

Just remember, peek not through a keyhole, lest ye be vexed

Oh, and has anyone compared this to the VGA version? It does look like the pic quality may be better with this one!

What makes you say that - the VGA has better resolution?

there are a couple of examples on youtube not too clear which is which but one 4gb version had a poorer quality piccy than this version... could have been software used to convert I guess but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sacrifice in performance..
#38
So could be either camera on Yutube and you assume it is the VGA oone is worse..

sorry didn't get update - No it was definately the higher resolution that was worse. I guess it makes sense cramming more light sensors into such a small space exactly the reason why SLR cameras are far superior at higher resolutions than smaller, similar sized cameras.

Has anyone received theirs yet? I know mine on the way but it was delayed due to low stock...
