yep, twin tuner twin record.

This box still has some bugs and you'll get the Humax fanboys on here in a minute clucking about this and how good their boxes are, but they aren't as cheap as this and don't come with Setanta.

oh, forgot to say that a completly revised firmware commenced testing in Jan and is due to be released. This will bring new FV+ features and eradicate the outstanding bugs. Voted hot as a £50 punt will get you an adequate box now that will turn into an excellent box soon.

The reviews are terrible but is that because of the software problem that has now been put right?
#12
it should be put right soon - a new firmware is in final testing at the moment and it's looking very promising...still not a perfect box but for the money it's hard to beat! Oh, one thing worth pointing out is that it's quite a noisy wee beastie so not much good in the bedroom :-D

I had one for a year and didn't cry and whine about it like some people. The current state of affairs is that most of the early bugs have been fixed but you can still get a corrupt recording which the box will remove automatically, it does not lose or delete recordings that play okay. You can get recording conflicts which result in missed recordings but thats usually where you have three recordings overlapping. The other bug is the FF one where if you go faster than 16x speed the playback can jump back to the beginning and make you FF all the way through again.

The fact is that TV is not the be all and end all of life and if you miss a recording you can usually pick it up again as most top programmes are repeated at least once again in the week. Some people get far too excited about missing something and if you only bought this for the live viewing and the Setanta then its a good price. For £30 more than a non-PVR FV box and with new firmware around the corner I cant see how anyone can complain.

If TV is essential to you then don't risk it and lash out around £100 on a Humax plus extra for the Setanta sub of course.

This site is currently full of offers for this heap of dross in various places, all "refurb" for one good reason, they don't work, and there must be thousands of them to get rid of.

Do you homework, they are useless, worth NOTHING at all - buy a Humax if you can afford it, if not, don't buy this and just do without, you will be happier in the long run
#15
Yes I fondly remember the early humax freeshat box & all the related bugs.Glass houses what?
#16
As above - I had one of the for a while from Tesco and ended up taking it back as it was pretty bad.

Google for the reviews on it before you part with your £50 ........

lol, didn't have to wait long did we :)

setanta supposed to be a bit of nightmare to cancel. Do you have to give CC or DD details to setanta? is it 6 months free & then your tied in for another 6 months.
suspended#19
i can confirm they had a few of these at the [pudsey] leeds store as you just walk through the entrance next to mc donalds
#20
will this be an automatic update download
#21
This looks a good deal. Only warning is Setantai! If you have to sign up to get the free 6 months a word of warning don't! You will have an awful job trying to cancel. I had to send letters recorded delivery and cancel my credit card to stop them taking payment. I never had any response to any letters.
#22
I had 1 of these. If it worked it would be great, but unfortunately it does not work. It would crash whilst playing recordings & just fail to record. They have been promising the magic fix download for a while noe. The last version that would fix all bugs(Such the fast forward bug) stopped Sentanta working and had to be withdrawn.
#23
Thanks. Hot.

I have had two of these and two Humax, I now just have two Humax’s. The first Thompson box was fine apart from some problems when fwd through recorded programmes (it would often jump back to the start of the programme). It was working well for about 4 months and then the HDD died. I took this back to Tesco and had a replacement no problem. The second one’s picture kept on sticking and freezing now this was not an aerial issue as this not happened with the first box. I did think about getting a 3rd box but in the end took it back and went for another humax.

The Humax is the better box but then you pay more than twice as much and do not get Sentanta free also the Thompson seems to have a better series link facility but in my case proved to be a bit unreliable.

If you do want Setanta on the Humax you will also need to buy a CAM so I now have a redundant Setanta card.

The greater worry of the two failed boxes I had was the dead HDD as I lost all programmes, Pictures etc kept on there and it was only 4 months old. The 2nd failed box was probably down to software.

My niece has had a Thompson box for over a year with no problems at all.

Agree, i have had 2 of these and they are totally useless, it may be cheap but its cheap for a reason, and that reason is that its total bullhonkey

COLD from me...
I also had two of these and both has the same faults and even worse than loosing or corrupting recordings, I had it in my bedroom and I had to switch it off at the wall plug. Yes, it is very noisy. I would not be able to leave it on standby to do recordings out of hours, we would wake up all the time. and even without recordings it switches itself on at 3 or 4 am to update whatever it needs to update - the guide I think.
Rubbish from my perspective.
#27
I had one of these for about a week - I didn't need the setanta or top-up tv (it's quite easy to reclaim the space for your owwn recordings); but the machine was noisy - keeping the disk spun up even when on standby so not at all green - otherwise it was good enough and probably worth a punt at £50 - WARM from me.

what's the point in buying cheaper and having no fun with it, in fact having the boring task to return the boxes and in the end going for the more expensive but more trustworthy.
#29
can you also use it to record ntl channels?
#30
wasn't Aldi banging these out over 6 months ago at £10 less? May have even been new & not refurb?
Either way, makes this deal less attractive.

twin tuner???

Pretty sure this isn't a twin tuner, it would shout about it if it was.
Play and record at the same time doesn't mean it's a twin tuner, as it doesn't need a tuner to play previous recordings.
A twin tuner will allow you to tune into two live broadcasts at once so that you can record one whilst watching another, or record two whilst watching a previous recording.
#32
had 1 of these for a week took it back for a refund
i even joined the beta software test but it didnt fix my box
bought a humax 9300t not looked back since
dont waste your cash on this

I have one of these,

Yes its noisy. I can hear it from the living room when im laid in my bed upstairs when I leave the door open. While its on standby.

Yes, it does annoyingly go back to the beginning randomly while fast forwarding.

But you know what? I hardly watch TV. Its not important to me. So screw you Humax fanboys, this is £50 well saved on something that does the job I need it to.
#34
Jees this site is strange sometimes, you advertise a deal like this and the product is really rubbish (honestly it is, its one a par with the generic asda, tesco pvr's) and even though its cheap its voted hot?? the site is surely about hot deals, its not a deal if the product is rubbish no matter how cheap it is, you could sell this for £9.99 and i wouldnt buy it as its a waste of £9.99
#35
may have already been mentioned, but descriptive text at ASDA website states additional 1 month inclusive trial of Top Up TV Anytime & PictureBox. Wonder what the cancellation requirements are for those?

I think you're wrong about the twin tuner - if you zoom the picture on the Asda site it's clearly a DTI 6300-16 which is twin-tuner.

:p

To be fair I thought clondikemike's review was quite accurate and informative - this box is perfect if you're deaf don't pay the electricity bill and aren't too bothered if you can actually watch the programs you recorded but didn't really want to see.
