It looks as if the Tesco Green Clubcard deal for recycling mobile phones is dropping in value. As of 31 August the link to deal http://www.tesco.com/greenclubcardpoints/ shows 500 points (100 for a broken phone), but the link https://secure.tesco.com/clubcard/clubcard/partners/?page=recycle shows 300 points (50 for a broken phone.

Even worse, you are limited to 5 phones a year.

However, if you go to your local Tesco store, you may be able to get the old envelopes by asking customer services to give you some. I got 4 today.

The terms and conditions on the old 500 point envelopes do not show any limit to the number of phones, and there is no expiry date on the offer. Therefore it is more likely that Tesco will honour the terms on the envelope from the stores.

No problem. You are probably safer if you use them quickly I guess, but equally there is no expiry date on the envelope. I guess if someone rings CS up and asks how long they will honour the old envelopes we will know.

I got this reply when I asked about recycle bags two days ago..

Dear Tesco Customer

Thank you for contacting us in connection with the mobile phone recycling campaign for 2007.

There are two options to send your phone to us, and claim your Green Clubcard Points or make a donation to the British Red Cross.

If you visit your local Tesco store, you will be able to pick up a Freepost envelope in which to send your phone - the envelopes should be available at all till points, where mobile phones are sold and at the customer service desk

You can send your old phone to us in your own envelope, addressing it to: Tesco Mobile Recycling, FREEPOST LON17592, Mitcham, CR4 3UZ - please read the Terms & Conditions below before sending your phone:

Terms & Conditions

Either 500 Green Clubcard Points will be award to you or £5 to the British Red Cross if your phone turns on; or 100 Green Clubcard Points to you or £1 to the British Red Cross if your phone does not turn on. You must include a piece of paper with your phone with your Clubcard number, Surname, Postcode & Email address - this information is solely for us to award your points and contact you if there are any discrepancies.

You should also clearly write on this piece of paper "My phone turns on" or "My phone does not turn on" along with the word "Charity" or "Clubcard" - if you write the word charity, or if you do not have a Clubcard, Tesco will make the respective donation to the British Red Cross; if you write the word "Clubcard" the Green Clubcard Points will be awarded to you.

Please ensure that you include all of the details set out above. If no information is included with your phone, Tesco will make the donation to charity

Tesco take no responsibility of phones damaged or lost in the post. Proof of postage is not proof of receipt

All phones will be verified by Checkmend to ensure they are not stolen. Any stolen phones received will be reported to the relevant authorities

My guess is the company concerned have had to re-evaluate the deal because they have received loads of junk phones. They are selling bricks on ebay as being "worth 500 clubcard points".

Rep given to ms01ma ;-)

It's still a bloody good deal IMO. £12 in deals for any old brick that turns on is OK by me. And if you have multiple cards, then the limitation to 5 trade-ins per year is not such a massive problem.

PS - sorry if it has gone a bit cold in here. Often, the truth does not suit everyone

The deal link is still showing 500 points, and they recently sent out a message to someone saying 500. Why not ring CS and ask them how many points for a phone? Nothing to lose by it. Maybe the 300 points is planned for future implementation. But if you do that, maybe dont give them your clubcard number just in case they say 300 and make notes on your account.

Oh and if it helps here's the wording off the proper envelopes, why not put that on the slip?

Clubcard Number_________
Surname________ Postcode______
email______

Then either
My phone turns on: I would like 500 Green Clubcards Points added to my account
or
My phone does not turn on: I would like 100 Green Clubcards Points added to my account

OK, who wants some? Plenty at Talbot Green Extra. I took enough for me, and have 12 spare! PMs please, I may limit the amounts per person if lots of people reply!

Posted the envelopes that people requested. I see Tesco still have 500 points on their link, so maybe the lower 300 points is for 2008?

PS just noticed that later 500 envelopes have Greener Solutions Freepost address rather than the Franked 2nd Class address. On the later envelopes, the 500 points circle is now in GREEN rather than RED and the logo has changed from Tesco Mobile to Tesco Telecoms. Apart from one or two other cosmetic changes, there is no difference.
