Back to Earth takes place after 'series ten'. Kochanski is dead and the crew are hurled through a portal and discover they are just characters from a TV series. Knowing they will die in the final episode the Dwarfers, in best Blade Runner traditions, decide to track down their creators to discover how long they have left to live. First the crew attempt to track down the actors who play them in the series and their metaphysical odyssey begins...

Features both a Director's Cut version of Back to Earth and the original televised version.

Good price. Didn't quite match up to the original series sadly, but still worth a watch!

Superb deal for an excellent and very under-rated show. The story improves watching the 3 episodes edited together. This was meant to be a different pace than other Red Dwarf episodes but sadly some "fans" were living in the past and expecting more of the same... which, no doubt they would have complained about for the actors being older now and it being sad or something. Buy this, you will not be disappointed. Ignore the Smeg Heads!!

Would higher recommend the two Red Dwarf books. I cried laughing!

This is sadly absolute cack. Cringeworthy.

Chris Barrie reads the books out on radio 7 and does the voices to all the characters, worth a listen

Very disappointing end to a great series. Wont be buying this. Nonetheless is a good price

This 'series' must have been fairly popular as they have commissened another whole series of episdoes

I absolutely love red dwarf and I thought this "mini series" was absolutely terrible, I will never buy it

Agree with this. Was surprised how good the first two novels were - they aren't simply a transcript from the shows which I think I was expecting. Essential reading. Of the two single-author novels, the Rob Grant one "Backwards" is by far the best IMHO - but still not up to the standard of the first two.
"Infinity welcomes careful drivers" and "Better than Life" are the ones to look out for.

The books and the first SIX series were fantastic. This mini series was quite outrageously bad though and sullied the memory of what made us fans in the first place. Reasonable price for the DVD though.

No thats because red dwarf fans were always going to watch however bad is might have been. I wasnt expecting it to be that poor though, just the lack of live audience/laughter track killed it for me. Ill be seriously wary of the new series.

This was nowhere near as good as any of the original series - a poor attempt to cash in from the huge fan base.
It's a good price for those who enjoyed it, but I think that most fans were disappointed.
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being discounted more.

They have menu's in restaurant's because everyone has a different opinion of what they want, I'm a fan of Red Dwarf and actually thought the mini series was ok, I was not expecting the same quality as the first 6 series hence why I was not disappointed with it.

I hope they do more episodes even if they are similar quality to this dvd as long as the stories don't go off in the wrong direction. Nice price for the DVD, won't be buying it though :)

1 was a fan of the first 6 series and am not one to judge a mini series on the success of the series as its a lot to live up to but thought this was rubbish if they cut back on some of the famous actors and spent more of the money on making it better still a cheap price
#16
My expectation was so low after seasons 7 and 8 that I actually thought this was ok. Certainly not to the level of the first 6 series but some good moments.

i love red dwarf but dont have the books. do you have a link to books that you are recommending?

Surely the lack of canned laughter is key to comedy. The real audience decides what they find funny.

I didn't think it was that bad. Of course it's not going to be as fresh as the earlier episodes. You cannot re-create great episodes like 'Marooned' in Season 3 where the whole episode is just RImmer and Lister in 1 small location but it just works so well and is very funny because the dialogue and the script are as sharp as a tack.

I'll buy this. HOT

jumped the shark ?
#24
It hasn't been the same since co-creator Rob Grant left after the sixth series.
#25
Absolute Rubbish should never of bothered making this mini series, 1-6 awesome 7-8 decent mini series total let down.
#26
It was very poor, like all the non-Rob Grant stories.
Although the suicide squid's mate making an appearance was a good idea.
Now Rob Grant and Naylor are back on speaking terms, a new series please ?
With grant's story telling (which was badly missed) and Naylors humour not allowed to run wild, but held in check (like series 1-6) - let's do it ! But better rush 'cos the characters aren't too young now....

Good Price - Hot

However, i too was bitterly dissapointed with this new attempt :( Only redeaming feature was that Kochanski was dead ;)

There is a new series, the scripts have been commissioned and filming is starting This year for it. Confirmed by person who plays kryton (can't remember his name right now llywelyn or something like that)

Yeah, indeed there is, Craig Charles (who players Dave Lister) was saying how over the past year he was busy with Corrie and new Red Dwarf which is apparently going to be series 10 as opposed to 9 so as to add an element of confusion to the story

Warning: opinion below

Red Dwarf I-VI was great as a teenager, but I avoided VII and VIII at the time as everyone berated it. Revisiting it all again ahead of the mini-series, I and II are still the best but increasing across III-VI the storytelling got really lazy and formulaic - monster of the week, spacecore directive, gelf-whatever. Watching VII and VIII for the first time last year, it was really clear that Doug Naylor dispensed with all of that to focus on story and characters again, so I'm surprised it was so universally panned. The mini-series was enjoyable enough, and it was good having a change of formula again. I expect X will be good enough as long as it's all about the story. Most people won't like it, but the changes over the series prove that you can't stick to a formula (winning or not) for too long, yet fans fear change.

Thanks for listening. I’m a riot at parties, you can tell.

I was expecting it to be poor but this was just depressing. I'll always be a fan of series 1-5 and a little of 6 but after that it got progressively worse to what it is today, they should have let it die.
