Agreed it doesn't always last for long - but I much prefer that to some of the other supermarket fruit that is either totally tasteless or never ripens.

You need to brownnose a lot (joke!)

As for the lifespan of the produce:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shopped-Shocking-Power-British-Supermarkets/dp/0007158041/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238295796&sr=8-1

^^^ that book explains why.

Is this a new deal - I bought the same things ( grapes and plums) a couple of times last week and pressumed it was a regular deal?

The products varied in quality enormously, the first batch they were excellent the next they were pretty poor.

But I guess that applies to any fresh products youy purchase.

Eat healthy.good one

Grapes have been very good - seem to be different varieties at times. Fantastic deal, but you have to get to the store early - early bird catches the worm (or grape)
#15
Ive been buying the plums, apples, oranges and potatoes a few weeks at this shop for this price

Ok here goes a few answers.
There are 5 different buying ofices for Aldi stores all in diferent regions.

The 'super 6' offers are for 4-5 week periods and are pre planned on previous years volumes in deiifferent products.

The next super 6 Aldi will sell starting next week will be 49p price and consist of Kiwi fruit,Childfren size apples,Broccoli,Celery,Green beans, and I believe salad potatoes.
The retail prices that Aldi promote at put the suppliers under extreme pressure so quite often it is a price that either breaks even or a small contribution frim Aldi/the importer and the grower.

The grapes they have been selling are from South Africa and South America which is a 3 week boat trip, may have been picked 1week before and may have been in the UK in a cold store for 1 week so by the time they are in the store they are almost 6 weeks old. As soon as the store takes them out of the refrigerated lorry that they are delivered in they start to dehydrate and the stems go brown and the berries wizen up and fall off. The bunches in the punnets are all the small berries they trim off from the large bunches they use for the bags you see in the superior supermarkets.

An orange is an orange the best being anything that has Navel on the label , Valencia lates (a variety) is more of a juicing orange but still eats ok.

Hope this helps a little.

What is with all the BS about grapes? They taste as good as the more expensive supermarket ones to me so what do I care how old they are or if they are class B?

No
I find Sainsbury's fruit & veg to have the poorest keeping quality, as well as poorest value of ALL the supermarkets

We got grape, apples, plums and tangerines or what ever they are called last week and they were 69p then - they are still fine from the fridge - although the bananas which were not 69p are better being left out overnight first.

No BS I have been importing fruit for 27 years so I know a little more than a few people and just passing on some advice and facts no BS ..but if you wish to take it as BS then you do just that

This advert was in The Sun a couple of weeks back so I sent my mother in to investigate ... she came back with dodgy sour grapes and alright(ish) satsumas but at double+ the price advertised.

Now it could be my mother that made her second mistake in her life (first was having me:-D) or Aldi do not have what they advertise ...:whistling:

Thanks for all the info - you obviously know your fruit 'n' veg.

With the last couple of loads of red grapes we've had from Aldi the few that weren't eaten immediately didn't last 24 hours at room temperature before browning up, nonetheless those we ate were a decent size and very tasty.

Presumably the "large bunches they use for the bags you see in the superior supermarkets" also brown and wizen as soon as they're out of the refrigerator and taken home; just more exclusively and expensively.
