First published in 1984, this study of Shelley by the Left-wing journalist Paul Foot (1937-2004) aims to counter the 'castration of Shelley at British places of learning' and to restore to the poet 'the political ideas without which his poetry loses its magic, its music and its meaning'. The book not only puts the poetry in the political context of the social convulsions in early 19th century Europe, but brings to the fore Shelley's political ideas and writings.

"And Anarchy, the skeleton,
Bowed and grinned to every one,
As well as if his education
Had cost ten millions to the nation."
