Isn't that always the way... :x

ashame it doesn't support 125Mbps.

I did a quick seach to find out how old these were:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

Version 5.0

BCM5352EKPB Chipset - Switched to VxWorks OS and reduced Flash Memory and RAM; not compatible with most 3rd party firmware. DD-WRT micro generic (released Apr 4, 2006) supports v5. See here for more information. An easier method has since been devised for flashing v5-v6 to DD-WRT. See here.

April the 4th of this year, Not old at all =).

Hope someone can help me.

I am thinking of getting one of these...but.

Ive never Installed my own wireless network at home and have no experience of wireless setups.

Basically we have a laptop indoors with a wired usb adsl modem (no home pc as weve no need), If I get the wireless router do I still have to have it wired to the computer as a "slave"?
Or can I just plug it into my current usb modem without having to go through the laptop and bobs your uncle ???
#7
amino - the router wont work with a USB socket, if your modem also has an ethernet socket then it can connect through that. If not, you're probably better off buying a wireless router with a built-in ADSL modem (as the alternative is to buy this WiFi router AND an ethernet adsl modem).
#8
Thanks :) any ideas of a good/cheapish one? Apologies for hijacking the thread. mods can split this if you think it should be
#9
amino - staying with Morgan computers, this one seems very decent:
http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=3546 - it should do everything the wrt54g will do & also has an in-built ADSL modem. It also looks a bit sleeker & goes 2x faster (in theory atleast...)

http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/images/products/Linksys_WiFi_Gateway.jpg

Note: this is refurb'd by Linksys again, but you get a 1year warrant from them. Also, at £35.24 inc VAT it compares very well against a 'new' one which is upwards of ~£60 (a quick glance through froogle).

 just noticed that Dixons sell these for £85 and Micro Anvika for £99.89 !!!!

Nice!, last q, promise (thanks for all your help) with this one I can do everything I need to do with it and it wont have to be physically attached to the laptop ?

anyone got any promo codes for them lol !?
#11
Yes amino - this should be all you need. Just go through the manual to set it up & you can chuck your wires away.

And sorry, have never seen any vouchers/codes for Morgan Computers.

2% Quidco at least :-)

That's a very tempting price for an ADSL router, now all I need to do is the research (want to use it plugged into a Mac and connected to a DS Lite). Oh yes, and an Xbox, for, ah, 'work'.

amino hasn't specified if his laptop is Wifi enabled or else he needs to buy a PCMCIA card to connect wirelessly to the router

anyone know if this router is xbox 360 compatible?
#20
bigup - the WRT54G (v1,2,3) is listed as being compatible at http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm

Not sure if this one (v5) will also work (it is quite different internally from v1-3). If not, you can flash it with alternative firmware from http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/ddwrt.php which should work. You may want to search for a bit more info on these, and though I haven't tried this combo myself I'm quite sure you'll be able to get it to work one way or another. Let us know how you get along...

http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware/Linksys/WRT54G

Version 5 isn't great for flashing etc as it has less ram/flash
#22
True - apart from the limited RAM/ROM v5 also uses a proprietary OS rather than the more accessible Linux based OS.

Instructions on flashing DD-WRT onto a v5 or v6 can be found at http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5%5FCFE

Mine is version 3.1 ...........I think?
how do you check?

You can apparently tell from the first 4 digits of the serial number - look here for instructions.
#25
The problem comes with this router if you're using a high speed connection to use anything the makes many connections (utorrent for example). The limited RAM in the router limits the number of connections you're able to make so it doesn't really compare to the older, more powerful models but it's still an amazing piece of kit.
#26
Agreed on the need for the extra RAM - I've got a Buffalo WZR-RS-G54 router with 64MB RAM & 8MB Flash ROM otherwise it's quite similar to the WRTG54 (pre v4) and it is REALLY fast. Picked it up for £35 in the clearance section at my local PCWorld - bargain!!

It's in small print underneath your router :)

The version 4 WRT54G's are better; they have double the memory and run a customisable version of linux instead of the less powerful VxWorks that the version 5's use. The version 5's are lesser quality pieces of kit that are basically much cheaper for Linksys to make. The equivalent of the old version 4 is the WRT54GL (L for linux) which is more expensive than the WRT54G. If you find a cheap version 4 then that is a much better deal.
#29
It is version 3.1
is that good?

Just thought I'd mention that delivery is around £8 !!!!!!
