Is it a DVD-RW or a combo drive (DVD+ CD-RW)?
#9
The description suggests that it is a combo drive.

I'm intrigued, how much would it cost to turn it into a fully workin computer with mac os?
#21
A WDTV would work out cheaper as a more capable media center. You would, however, need to buy an external hard drive.
#22
Sorry to ask a silly question b'coz of my poor knowledge in relation to hardwares.

This desktop base is ready for use out of the box.....Does that mean it has got drivers, motherboard and other softwares preinstalled?

If they are already preinstalled, will it just be a matter to connecting a monitor for this to work after installing the monitor software?
#23
Not sure why I would need this pc, but im sure I could think of something.
A media centre possibly or a second pc to do all the dirty work or possibly a windows 7 installation. If all else fails give it to mum to play solitaire.

Yes! presumably so, you'd also need a monitor, keyboard and mouse, maybe also a power cord (one of those 3 pronged kettle ones) if they dont supply one with it, which they probably will. Remember this is used, so might be some junk on there from previous users

Avoid GX280s and GX270s. They suffer from a major issue relating to swollen capacitors that cause various problems, from harddisk damage to random freezes to never booting up again. It's very, very common.
#28
I have had a GX280 for donkeys years and bought another from AVF only last year for £60.

Done the trick for me.

As in everything, you get problems, but I assume that may have been a small batch of motherboards.

My two are still going strong and are used as main kids PC's, so get some hammering.

I'm guessing it doesnt have an OS, but I dunno.

Edit - Nevermind :) just ignore me :-D

Actually looking over at dells site this is apparently a SFF! dimensions seem to be a bit bigger than your typical sff, anyway heres the link.

There seems to be 3 chassis types for this model.

To me it looks like the GX520 SF

There's no free AGP or PCIe slot on these just 1 or 2 pci slots depending on mobo. Only VGA with Intel MA950 onboard graphics, so pretty poor media centre capability.
#35
I so wish I had a reason to buy this.
#36
i'm sure i've got an old pci vid card with 4mb of memory somewhere, then again this is a half height pci slot, I guess the 90's weren't so bad. Wonder if I can cancel my order :whistling:
It does use a share of 224 megs of the memory for the video mem, so can run most resolutions.
Unbelievably this comes with Sata/300 which is latest tech.

IMO if you're going to run XBMC then the best device to run it on is a XBOX. Apart from the obvious, it's also much cheaper as a system to build.

I've considered buying a cheap PC to see how XBMC would run on it but can't really find a good reason to replace that with my XBOX.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Also I managed to grab my mate a P4 2.4 PC I think from Gumtree for £50. Just another option. Not sure if this comes with any warranty but obviously they don't.

You are joking yes?

Since when is a fixed embedded hardware with restricted firmware solution more capable than a PC? Yes it might be cheaper but it's useless if it can't play your latest video!

With a PC - any new variant of DIVX, wmv, avi etc etc can easily be supported by newer software codecs - with your suggested solution you'd better pray the manufacturer releases updated firmware.

will the HDD be SATA? because i could rip it out, put it in this computer and buy a larger one for this one.
