difference is that teh IBM will still be going in several years time - keyboard hinges platics will all still be there are working just fine

Any of the cheapo laptoip now have a life expectancy of little over a year in anything but the most gentle of environments.

In context:
the OEM XP Pro licence would cost the best part of £80 if bought separately, so this makes the laptop under £120 for the hardware.
in the context of the original post mentioning "if you just want something to surf and pick up emails" then it will be more than adequate. this deal will have appeal and value to those people.
voted hot in the context of the suggested application.

exactle

If you want a laptop to take away on holiday or business and do not need super fast processing then this is ideal.

Pretty well bomb proff - just try actaully carrying an advet / pack bell / acer / And in some caes the cheaper Dells anywhere and see how they last !!!

thanks for the post,
but i say go for the dell @ 281 pounds, 1gb memory ****** hard drive, dvd riter and many other extras, plus its brand new.
thank anyway
if this was around £150 then it would have been hot.

brilliant laptop. i, as i'm sure many of us do, work in IT and i would recommend this over pretty much any brand new laptop costing between 200 and 300.

build quality, good track pad, in my opinion a good sized screen that makes the laptop portable.

i've seen countless cheap acers with flakey keyboards and cheap HP's with unresponsive trackpads after a year of use. my mum has had an old ex-business thinkpad for 4 or 5 years and only now is it starting to show it's age.

1 bad experience with dell support has put me off. never again :-(

Would have voted warm, but doesn't deserve to be cold in here so I've voted hot.

People need to bear in mind, IMO anyway, that deals can be warm/hot even if that's not what you'd personally go for...

fantastic price :) this system is worth more than that even today, its a sturdy system and won't die. I'm currently typing this on a T40 that's around 5 years old and still going strong

try and use the cheapies for anywhere more than a year.

This is a work laptop used everyday for more than 5 years!

I'm a desktop/laptop technician, and I have to fix IBM laptops on a day to day basis.
Yesterday alone I had 2 X61's both with non-battery related charging problems, and the day before I had a T43 with a faulty HDD (I could go on all day with IBM laptop failures to be honest)and they're a lot more recent than the model in this deal.....

for those that doubt the hardware:
£1.50 more for better spec
