Don't you think its weird that the only refurbished MP3 players you see around are IPODS?

I've never seen another brands refurb, correct me if I'm wrong.

Is it because IPODS are cack? Is that why you see so many refurbs......?

:?

Well this is at the Apple store you know....

There have been quite a few Samsung/Philips refurbs also. A few Creative but less often. I think it has more to do with the resale channels.
#4
Yeah Samsung refurbs were filling Aria last year and they're not cack either :)
#5
Good point.

Its probably because they sell the most out of any media player, guess it makes sense they'll be more faulty ones.
#6
I'm not saying refurbished products are cack, just asking the question why you see alot of one brand.

Apple's Refurb store has been running for a long while now (certainly for refurb Mac's anyway) so it's no surprise :)

And remember all Refurb kit on the Apple Store comes with a full 12 month warranty.

The link is borked - it includes expired session info.

Click here, then go to the bottom right of the page. You'll see the message 'Looking For A Great Deal?' and a large 'SAVE' icon. That'll take you to the Refurb Store.

Or Google 'Apple UK Refurb Store' - first result (does not work for visitors with an existing Apple Store session)

Link should work now :)

Wrong - Archos also sell refurbished units on their site.

Taken from the apple refurbishment details page:

" Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:

* is fully tested (including full burn-in testing).
* is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testing.
* is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection.
* is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, etc.).
* includes the operating software originally shipped with the unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each products "Learn More" for more details.
* is given a new refurbished part number and serial number.
* is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.
* is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.
* is repacked in special packaging (including appropriate manuals, cables, etc. that originally shipped with the unit).

Refurbishment procedures follow the same basic technical guidelines as Apple's Finished Goods testing procedures. "

See, they even do two Final QA inspections :giggle:

I bought my 30 GB from Apple refurb and it worked out swimmingly.

Probably all the iPods whose batteries crapped out after the 12 months, just with new batteries bunged in.

iPods are cack though (not cos they break, though a lot of batteries crap out) but because they are over-priced and lack features on other better players who are usually cheaper.

anyone have rough idea how often the stock changes at the apple refurb store as i'm after a black 30gb and they only have white at the minute?
#16
It used to be weekly every Wednesday as far as I know. It could have changed though.

As long as it comes with a 12 month warranty then seems ok to me, without it I wouldnt purchase - had problems with my Ipod and had to get it changed.

Had my 6gb mini for almost 2 years been good as gold despite me managing to drop it numerous times.

Was looking at these earlier, but i decided to buy a nano instead. Wouldn't mind one now - haven't got enough space on the nano :-(

So put the Rockbox firmware on it...
#26
Which would void any warranty, and doesnt sort the battery problem.
Even with Rockbox it still isnt as good as most.

what battery problem is that?
#28
That actually a legit question?

Most people know that generally the iPod batteries are crap, and wont let you replace them yourself so you have to go buy the newest models when they come out.

Are they really, personally i dont listen to my ipod for 20 hours+ on the spin so can easily make sure its charged each time i come to listen to it.
#30
Well i said they wont let you replace the batteries, showing the problem lies in the batteries life cycle.

Too many people have to replace their ipod's after 12 months because the battery cant be replaced. Well they can if you send it to Apple, which is about expensive as a new one.

ok all batteries won't last forever, but generally only getting a year out of it, and not being able to replace it when it dies, means lots of people buying shiney new iPods every year ;)

i bought one of these refurb. video ipods 6 months ago for £129 (-£6 on quidco)..it was fine for about 3 months then started to freeze repeatedly and i nearly had to restore it daily with the pain of downloading everything from scratch...i contacted apple, they collected it from my home address within 3 days..a week later they sent me a replacement which looks like new (that was good luck as the first one had many scratches after i used it for 3 months) and working perfectly..so far i cant fault apple and iam a happy customer.
#32
Seems there still in stock.
#33
does anyone know if the 30gb and 60gb video ones are the latest versions?

thanks

They are exactly the same size and weight as the latest ones on the actual apple store (not refurbished) so would guess so.
