First things to do when you get this machine to make it faster:
1. Remove bloatware with PC Decrapifier:
http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/download

2.a. Remove whatever security program they've put on, especially if it's McAfee, using Appremover (or search for the specific removal utility from whichever antivirus vendor is on the PC):
http://www.appremover.com/

2.b. Disable Windows Defender otherwise it might conflict with av software:
http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-business-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/587

3. Install faster av program such as free Avast! antivirus or Antivir depending on your preference
http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
(follow these instructions to remove the Antivir nag popup http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm)

4. Run Startup Lite from Malwarebytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php

5. Check for yourself what is set to startup with Windows using Autoruns:
http://download.cnet.com/AutoRuns/3000-2094_4-10744886.html

Afterwards you could run services.msc and set to manual services you don't need (lots of guides on the net, particularly blackviper), run crapcleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim), install extra memory, or run cleanmem (http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem) which may or may not do anything.

Anyone recommend this as ive been looking at dell 1018 but another £70

Is 1gb of ram really enough? Can more be added? Can it run Windows 7 ok?
You gonna find the answer when you put MSI WIND U135 on the search (top right corner)... It was posted couple times
#7
ive got the white version

the battery lasts nowhere near 7 hours, it struggles to play youtube vids and bbc iplayer

apart from that its pretty decent

you have to remove the whole back of the computer which voids your warranty to upgrade the ram
#8
Superb. Decent battery, proper size keys (like the NC10) and a decent sized trackpad (unlike the NC10). I am tempted.

I'm on a phone..... And I know google would probably have given the answer also.

Thanks for nothing.

TBH I think he was actually trying to be helpful.

He might just have written "google is your friend".

I would find that a lot more offensive. He was referring to a thread actually placed on this site.

:)

Yes it is for most netbook things
Yes more can be added
Have not tried Win7 but I understand there is not much difference between it and XP in terms of slowing the box down.

No it doesn't invalidate the warranty. I checked when I bought my Wind U100.

Quick answers - Yes, yes, yes.
More detailed - It depends on what you are doing with it, yes up to 2gb and yes.

Some say 1gb is fine but you can add 1gb more (you can add a 2gb but apparently it will only recognise a max of 2gb including the 1gb already installed). There is a version of this machine (same spec) but sold with Windows 7 starter (not xp) how well it runs it though I don't know....

These come as 3 cell or 6 cell versions - if advertised as 7 hour then it should be the 6 cell battery. Magazine reviews show the battery should last nearly 5 hours with max cpu usage etc so you're probably looking at 6 hours normally.

Guv - knowing how you like your films and fiddling with technology you might be interested in this quote

I picked up the U135DX instore last Friday. It's an amazing little machine - especially since I found out how to speed it up in the bios menu!
It's now home to my retro collection - runs PSone games no problem. Also plays 720p mkvs using XBMC. Highly recommended little netbook!

I've got the U100 and it makes a great Hackbook. Putting another gig of ram in was straightforward enough too.
#16
I think that the title is misleading. I can't see anything in the listing that indicates that these are 7hr/ 6 cell machines. Previous listing explicitly stated 7 hrs.
#17
I've got a similar spec Samsung and manage basic video encoding and download whole US chick tv crap for my daughter to watch whilst we are on holiday and runs fine for this.No good for any sort of gaming but will do for most people really.Great deal and tempted to get one for my daughter!
#18
Piping hot!

Windows 7 is more than happy with 1GB and if you need more on a machine this size you need a different machine.

Just bought one and there's 322 in stock as I type.

Yes this is correct, you ll get a standard battery with this and not the 7hours battery....buyers be warned.
#20
I mentioned Windows 7 -looks like it's XP http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5084289/Trail/searchtext%3EMSI+WIND.htm

That then would not be such a good deal IMO.

Worth noting.

I bought the same model a couple of weeks ago - with a 1 GB memory upgrade (CT1860164 1GB, 204-pin SODIMM - £10.79 from Crucial) and with Windows 7 installed it shows

2.4 for the Processor, 4.7 for the RAM, 3.0 for the Graphics, and 5.4 for the HDD on Windows Experience Index.

Great little machine for the money and highly recommended.

Good point, it doesn't actually say 7 hours
#23
The 7 hour version of this comes up for sale at the ebay argos outlet quite often... I bought one for my Sister last week for £134.99 plus £3.99 postage. It had XP installed but I replaced with Windows 7 and it works a treat. I ordered a white one but they sent a black... no worries there though. The netbook was as new...

How does anyone actually know this doesn't have the 7 hour battery?

Argos have the same description on the same model here which in the title states it is 7 hours:

I'm fairly certain Argos have sold these as 3 cell or 6 cell versions. . Assume you will get a 3 cell version - people will be dissappointed if they buy this assuming its 6 cell and they get a 3 cell

Having had a look in the old catalogue these were being sold as up to 7hrs, so that implies 6cell battery tho it didnt state in the description. If they have just lifted that description from the old catalogue, then I'm assuming its 6cell. Anyway, its such a good price I'm taking a chance. Can always sell it on.

Misinformation such as yours caused me to email MSI support to check that upgrading the memory does not void the warranty. Their reply is below:

Dear customer,

It is fine to break the warranty seal on the memory and HDD.

This is because it needs to be possible for the owner of a notebook to upgrade his or her device.

Hoping I have provided you with the information you requested.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Support Team Msi

Will not bite unless there is confirmation it is a 6 cell, 3 cell is pretty pointless on a netbook imo.

I have sent a message via ebay, doubt they will reply before it all sells out.
#29
Dear argos,

Hi - can you tell me how many cells battery this has please?

We are unable to provide any further information from that in our listing. For more specific product information or technical advice, please visit the manufacturer?s website or contact the manufacturer directly. For your convenience, we provide a 'Helplines' link on all our shop pages. Alternatively, further information may be obtained if you paste the item description into your internet search engine.

Kind Regards

The Argos Outlet Team

If this did arrive with a 3 cell could you buy a 6 cell battery pack and pop it in?
#31
Like people are saying -you won't know what you get until you get it. Par for the course with bulk stuff like this from Argos and similar sellers.

Also -important this- you have full return rights within 7 days for this item as per the Distant Selling Regulations. You may return it for any reason after inspecting it. You do not have this with Argos instore.

I think it's a great price even if it is XP and I'll still be happy with it.

Review: http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/4644/msi-wind-u135-netbook-review

I'll be removing the crappy security and installing Microsoft's own http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
#32
Yes that's worth mentioning about the 7day distance selling regulations. I have returned an item to them like this after changing my mind and they were very efficient about it and came and collected it (so no return postage either).
But do you think it will be obvious that it is 3 or 6 cell when it arrives, or would you have to use it to find out how long the battery last?
[helper]#33
If you look at the previous similar listing by Argos/ebay
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/msi-wind-u135-160gb-10in-netbook-pink-refurb-deal-129-99-delivered-argos-ebay-ou/857808

Most people got 6 cell - there is one report of someone getting a 3 cell though

6 cells are easy to spot they stick out a little bit at the bottom so tilt the netbook slightly forward ie they don't sit flat on the table so you don't even have to switch it on to tell you what battery you have.

The 3 Cell Battery fits flush with the rest of the Netbook chassis.

The 6 Cell Battery is a little fatter and fits proud of the Netbook Chassis.

Do these have a sim card slot anywhere and a mini pci slot so I can put my 3G/hsdpa card in? If not does anyone know what netbook does as I'm having problems finding a replacement for my eeepc 901 3G. Cheers

Some good advice there, I use all these apps every day in my work. I have a few others to mention >

Iobit Gamebooster 2 >

http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html

Whilst this is desgined for gamers, it's also a great way of speeding up your pc, it has to be enabled after every boot up, but if you have a slow netbook or pc it can auto shut down services that you don't need if you're just doing basic pc tasks such as browsing etc. It will shut down the printer service but it's all configurable so you can make it not do that.

Antimalware toolkit >

http://www.lunarsoft.net/lunarsoft/anti-malware-toolkit-103125

Whilst this is desgined for removal of malware, it has removal apps for stubborn antivirus apps, and other very useful utils, I have to set to a folder on my memstick, it's best to set in the program's option to download to seperate section folders, that way everything is organised in to utilities, applications, recommended apps etc. So you have one folder e.g. AntiMalware Toolkit and in that folder you have seperate folders for each section.

Smartclose >

http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/index.htm?http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/smartclose/index.htm

This is one for the more technically minded, a great way of shutting many services and TSRs without going in to safe mode.

I hope these suggestions are useful to the tweakers out there and people who want more performance.

Does anyone know if these have a shiny gloss screen or one of the matte screens?

Seriously tempted to buy one of these...

The advent 4213 has a sim card slot. Although I did buy mine about 2 years ago so not sure on their availability these days.
#39
From what I can tell using Google, Argos have only sold the 3cell XP in White & Purple, so it looks like the chances are good that these will be 6cell, unless the refurb involved swapping the battery.
Also for those who want to wait it looks like there are a total of 590 pink and 335 black netbooks on sale.
#40
A great buy. . . just ordered for wife who keep Borrowing my Acer netbook but think will put Windows 7 on it later on
