No, they ban your console ID and possibly your Gamer tag

i believe that you can switch an unmoddable liteon drive to this.
but its complicated and involves soldering.
There is also a high risk of getting banned as its a sammy.
get a benq drive instead and switch using that, its safer on live.

You won't get your account (Gamertag) banned for a modified console. They banned people's accounts because of words in the gamertag which could be offensive. There's now a filter which prevents you from creating a new one like it, but existing ones had to contact MS to get theirs changed.

Thanks for the comments guys. But if you need a replacement its a good deal!!!

Ahh, I wasn't sure about that, I'm actually suprised they don't!

Visit the website to view tutorial on how to replace a liteon drive.

The benq is also no more secure than a samsung, and also suffers from slow loading which the samsung/toshiba don't.

Hello people,

My sons xbox 360 drive fails to open and read, would this resolve it?

I can fit it myself, just do not wanna spend to only realise it is a cable and not the whole drive.

Thanks.

hi, my daughters xbox 360 drive doesn`t read, would this be ok to swap? the 360 is about 2yrs old
any help would be great
thanks

This will work as a replacement for ANY dead 360 drive, but it's not a case of simply swapping them over.

How old is your 360 ?.

hi mate, I am not sure as I bought it from a friend, I would guess at 2 years.

What's involved?

I've swapped laptop and pc drives, similar to that?
#15
No you need to read the drive key from the original drive and flash it to the new one, otherwise it won't work.

Nothing like swapping laptop/desktop drives really.
#16
If you already have this kind of drive in your 360 (either the MS25 or MS28) and it's sticking etc, you don't need to touch anything of the drive key etc.

You open the old drive up, carefully remove the ribbon cables and remove the logic board (PCB). I'd advise getting a marker and writing something on the board so you know which is which!

Do the same with the new one.

Swap them over - put your old logic board in the new drive unit and carefully reconnect the cables.

All done - you'll have a new drive mechanism without anything else to do. :)

I'd be careful there - if the drive is dead, the EEPROM may be toast too. If this is a case and the data has never been dumped, it'll be no good to you! If the EEPROM is ok, you may need to remove it and dump the contents BWO a programmer. Not an easy task, especially with all the black goo they put over the chips on these.

Been giving flashing my DVD some serious thought, this seemed like a good safeguard but don't think i'll bother if i'm going to end up banned!

It may be laser related - in which case, a replacement laser will do the job just as well. You'll need a laser, model number HD63 which can be found all over Ebay. Buy from the UK tho :-).

Here's a guide on how to swap it. (you can also use this if you were swapping the PCBs over - see my other post)

Thanks for your comments on this topic guys. Replacing/Flashing an xbox drive is by no means easy if you have little knowledge of the 360. I'm getting one just in case!!! Shame i didn't get it to the front page!!!
Thanks:thumbsup:

You're welcome - just remember that replacement lasers are shipped with an antistatic solder blob (to stop any damage to the laser in transit). You'll need a soldering iron to remove it, or you can ask whoever you buy it from if they wouldn't mind removing it for you.

Just remember if you have a problem with Dealextreme don't expect a refund quickly, if at all.

Customer service is awful - they promise refunds then leave you waiting for at least a month.

Don't think Paypal (their only payment method - weird that considering the fees - hmmm wonder why) will help, they'll reject your claim for anything other than non delivery.

If you open a dispute DX will use that as an excuse not to deal with your complaint.

At best you'll be locked in a customer service ticket ping pong match with someone who struggles to speak English who will fall strangely silent once it gets to refund time.

Very true. Chances are the eep wil be fine, but if someones drive is just "dead" and they don't have a clue what is wrong with it they are better getting someone else to look at it. No point wasting money on a new drive that is useless to them.

No it will not and from the 19th, they will have much tighter security checks and I believe even if you are not online once you use some games made after 19th November the update will load into your system(unless you only have 128mb stick memory) and you just may be asked to contact MS to get your 360 to boot again.

Good deal if your 360 is out of warranty on the drive.

WOT?! whats your source on this info? and what do you mean 'unless' you have 128mb stick memory??

I thought you still needed to replicate the drive ID from the drives ROM ? so i dont think its a straight replacement as such.
#35
You know whats annoying now, stuff on DX is more expensive due to the current economic situation, pound is no longer as strong against the dollar :(

Guys and gals I'd highly recommend to avoid these drives altogether. They are grade A reburbs / remanufactured at best. I've had similar from hong kong (I got them from a local supplier) and out of 10 drives 6 of them needed replacing within a week. It's not worth the risk.

The UK now has a fantastic supply of quality console bits and bobs and at a very reasonable rate. Check www.mrmodchips.com and www.ukmodchips.net for an idea of what the 'retail' price of a brand new Samsung (from Samsung and not some chinese 'Samasong')

As for the dashboard update I'd simply suggest to not update straight away and let others test the waters before getting the all clear. As the dashboard is optional it difficult to say whether added security will be included.

If you have a MS28 then a replacement would just be as suggested in a previous post where you'd just change the daughterboard.

Don't waste money on these drives! If you're laser is truly screwed then www.mrmodchips.com has new replacement lasers for under a score.

As for liteon replacement services checkout www.ukmodchips.com or use google to find a local installer (www.mrmodchips.com now has a 'locate an installer' function! )

Sorry, what? You just made that entire thing up based on nothing but your own raw speculation, there's enough FUD on the internet without people like you adding to it.

Yes, there's a major software update coming out on the 19th, but as of this post, nobody has ANY information on what it could mean for modified for swapped 360 drives.

I have it on good information that the update wont mean much for moddified console. you will still be able to update it and use live. Not sure if he's pulling my chain but the guy seems genuine enough as he is testing the new system right now and has feedback from questions direct from Microsoft.

Which is about what most people expect from this update. What's not known, however, is if Microsoft has found a new/better way to detect backups being used on Live that will be rolled out with the update. Nobody will have a clear answer for this until a few weeks after the update has been released (when the fancypants hax0rs can monitor live communications).
But yeah, no sense spreading rumours like that guy was doing.

Hey does anyone know if this is alot more silent than the drive thats in it?

The noise these f`ing drives make in full rpm is a pain in the ****, the fans can be changed to be silent but i wonder if this drive would resolve that issue?
