I went to SA for the first time last September and would happily go back tomorrow, amazing place.

They carry machine guns because it's a dangerous country. As a tourist however, you won't really be venturing into the "trouble spots" - so I doubt South Africa is much more dangerous to visit than most other developed countries (and is certainly safer than a good number of the less developed).
