OK... it's about time we all try and do our bit for the environment... ditch the plastic bags!

There's no excuse when they're this cheap either... 45p each, and they are Buy One Get One Free!

They are quite compact, and fold flat and close shut with a press-stud.

Information from label is as follows:

~ Water Resistant
~ Size open 34cm x 38cm x 16cm
~ Quick and Easy to Unclip and Open Out

Couldn't see them online, only in store... they've been this price for a while too, but I'm not sure how long the offer is on.

Please note, there are two varieties:

Shopping Bag - Short Handles
Shoulder Bag - Long Handles

Brilliant- the fewer plastic bags we use the better. We need to get out of the habit of using them. Even the degradable ones take many years to decompose. Let's try to clean up the planet for our children!

I quite like that - makes a change from having the name of the shop plastered all over it, hehe!

I didn't think the handles were that long?!

Whatever happened to string bags????
#13
Mine is a long handled variety too!! Bit big to keep in your bag (I have LARGE handbag so it doesnt bother me too much). The only problem with keeping it in the boot is that you tend to forget to take it shopping with you so you end up having to use carrier bags to carry the shopping to the car!!! Defeats the object a bit me thinks!!:whistling:

They are indeed a great buy but I found the handles were too long on them

You know... I wonder if they're different now, 'cos the handles on these two aren't long at all?

I must say that i have noticed a real big change in the amount of free carrier bags used at sainsburys. I would say about 1/2 of the customers if not more bring their own bags now, which is pretty impressive. Some just bring back the free bags, but others have the bag for life, super shopper bags, and all sorts of others.

Oh, and this is a good price BTW op.... next time i'm there, i think i may buy a few, so thanks :-D
#23
It's a good deal, but there will always need to be some disposable bags (whether plastic or other) in stores, as you don't always know either how much you're going to be buying, or even if you're going to be going in particular shops when you set out that day...?

When I do get plastic bags, I do reuse them a number of times for carrying things in to work, so at least to get some more use out of them... perhaps the stores could also make more of the packaging boxes available for carrying food etc to your cars, you don't seem to see that as much as you would 10 years ago?

The amount of excessive packaging on most products nowadays should be the next target? Does anyone know what the modern wrappers on the likes of KitKats, mars bars, cakes etc are like for recycling purposes (not that many years ago they'd be wrapped in paper, and would I'd have thought been easier to recycle).

Very good - any step to getting rid of the "get a plastic bag, throw it away" culture has got to be good. There are 13 billion plastic bags given out in this country every year!

Didnt a designer make a shopping bag last year sometime? cost a fiver... unless is was on ebay then you were looking at about £300....

I admit, it IS fugly, but then no one said saving the planet was gonna be pretty! lol

The government said that if the supermarkets don't do something about carrier bags they will!

And i have heard Marks and Spencers are now starting to charge for their bags, how long till the others follow suit :x

Aldi & lidl been doing that for a while (to cut cost I am sure:) - I use my shopping plastics as a bin liner. What do I do if I stop getting my supplies from the supermarket?

These really are great bags - I use them for everything and they seem stronger than they look too. I was down the market and filled one of these bags to the brim with spuds and other assorted fresh fruit & veg.

Voted hot!!

 I do this too, I've been using carrier bags as bin liners for years and I’ve never thrown a carrier bag away unless it's full of rubbish, I would imagine that a lot of people do just throw them away rather than reuse them though. I'll have to start buying swing bin liners.

Manufacturers must be forced to reduce the amount of packaging with products, not just food but everything, toys are one of the worst for packaging. I'd also like to see a huge reduction in junk mail.

We use them as bin bags too

Think this is really good, a lot of the reusable bags are quite feminine, but this would be ok for a man to use.

It seems I am the only one that hates these bags. I bought loads of them when they were 20p and I have found they are useless! Several of them have frayed and split at the seams and because of the strange shape of them where they narrow in the middle you can't fit much in them. They drive me nuts!!!!
#34
I give any extra supermarket bags I have to the local charity shops:thumbsup:

Hi,
I have several of these, the handles are long, but that's why I like them - they go on my shoulder (great cos' I can't carry much at all otherwise- my joints have had it). I'm pretty short (5'2") and can carry these normally without them trailing, and if you don't like long handle just tie them shorter. I think the handle length (and general proportions) is perfect if you do shopping on foot, it lets you carry a few full ones without cutting into your hand or you can put them on your shoulder. For car shopping I think the shorter rectangular ones with the wide opening are probably easier eg. the asda green cloth bags.

The Wilko's label it on the bottom so no-one sees it when you're carrying them, just the little "helping our envroment" logo is visible which I quite like.

They are pretty strong, all you need for normal shopping, even if you stuff them with drinks. Not quite strong enough for carrying heavy tools in frequently- the stitching started to give after a month, but hey, that's pretty good still. They last really well (apart from abusing them as tool bags), I've had some over a year and still great, not broke one through normal use yet, even though I fill them to the max frequently.
They taper in the middle, which annoys me - it helps it keep it's shape, but you can't get as much in.

I keep a couple in my medium handbag for shopping locally which they're perfect for, and the compactness makes them good to take supermarket shopping (although they're harder to pack in a hurry) for those rare occasions when I get a lift.

I love these bags. A great find and post!! Rep given.

Chuffed that people are voting this hot.

I've definitely bought the short-handled variety... says nothing on the packet though, so don't know how I would have known!

But I'm only 5'2" too, and these are fine for me...

These are great, bought two myself at christmas

Just called back into Wilko's today, to get some more bags (to keep in the car), and I noticed the two varieties:

The short-handled bags say "reusable shopping bag" on them, whereas the long-handled ones say "reusable shoulder bag".
