The Canon 60D coped alot better, taking pictures for longer albeit at 5.3 fps.

Good price for those (read ME) that missed out on the Jacobs bargain.

Think i'll hold out for the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED based on reviews. Not really comparable for the price though.

they are foreign import lenses too... + the people in the store at middlesbrough are complete dicks.
I have read that RGB do split kit lenses which I assume is perhaps from people wanting to buy a body only when no stock perhaps but you do tend to get a lens or camera body that is slightly cheaper.

I have read of a lot of people getting 24-105mm f/4 L IS lenses in a white box from the Canon 5D kits
chortle
Great. I need a lens to replace my 18-55mm that came with my E350 kit. After a couple of years it died, leaving me with only a macro lens. I need to take some photos in a range slightly above my macro capability. 20mm-25mm would do it.

I wouldn't bother with this lens then. You can pick up a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS (supplied with the 550d) for about £150. I am sceptical of these 'super' zoom lenses. More often than not they are awful.

I've been waiting to see how low this goes with the D7000 now replacing it. The D90 will work with all the legacy lenses that some of us have. Still hoping for £500...

Whilst the D7000 is a great camera, at double the price I don't see it as a replacement, it will however replace the D300 and D700 in most situations.

is this better than a d90? i was going to buy the d90...(cant afford the d7000)
Now £399.97 @ Dabs
It's as simple as that...if they label it at entry level...they should know there would be too much experimenting going on...that means lots of lenses...
at least Canon got it right this way...

And mind you that even the glass with SWM/HSM that suits the entry/enthusiast level is still slow....if you get a 55-200 that's 4-5.6, or a 70-300 that goes up to 6.3, then we are talking about slow lenses....at least not as fast the 2.8 ones... and because of that, they require good lighting otherwise they'll hunt...so back to square one....

In my own humble opinion, Sony got that covered with the in-body focus motor and vibration reduction.... this way newbies don't have to do lots of research and can just focus on the optical performance of the lens...but again, I'm a Nikon fan and not a sony person....so....gotta stick to what i've got :)

debates and arguments would never end when a feature in a camera is involved. I remember witnessing pages of argument regarding the VR feature and whether it's a "fancy" name to catch newbies or it is really worth the money...
you'll find people from each camp taking their side and hammer each other :)

cowbutt
wnofal
Gotta hate Nikon for making another one without an in-body focus motor!
If truly this's intended for entry level, they should've added the motor, this way way you can use cheaper lenses that are not AF-S/AF-I.
AF-S and AF-I, being quite good lenses with built-in SWM, are quite expensive. even if you're looking at other manufacturers, the likes of sigma and tamron...their lenses with HSM tend to be quite pricey.

When I was buying my D5000, a friend said not to worry too much about the lack of in-body motor, as the lenses without built-in motors are much slower to focus anyway. This is probably more frustrating for a DSLR newbie than having to pull out a bit of extra cash, or having to save up to buy all the lenses they want.

Was reading it yesterday...the comparison between the D3000, D5000 and D3100 seems to be in the D3100 favour, although the D5000 still gets points :)

I do have a D60 too, and use Nikon glass, the 18-55 vr II, 55-200 vr and a brilliant 28-80 3.3f
Think if we had a body with a focus motor, could've got the 50mm 1.8 for less than £100, the 70-300 (not as great as the 70-200 but good for experimenting), the 28-80 3.3f that is brilliant optically...and so on..

You are clearly either in the wrong ball park or just deluded , if you want perfection of course a lens like this will disappoint.... thats why its cheaper  HOWEVER, for us non-pixel peepers out there, this is a good lens (love your admission to buying 2 of these "crap" lenses LOL!!)

I have done a lot of research with both these lenses, and one thing I will say is I am not wrong.

They are good lenses, but not as good as some others.

Someone mentioned the Tamron 17-50 - AMAZING lens I will say, L quality.
aircanman;8394837
Loving the rant btw, I did not for one minute say I was a L glass user, yes I have owned a couple of L lenses, but to be honest, with the type of photography I do I dont use them.

While the Sigma lens has very good reviews, on a personal level, (I have had 2 copies of that lens) - I have found its colour reproduction to be less vivid compared to a canon equivalent. Plus there is no point having the f2.8 when its only at 17mm. Plus the lens needs quite alot of light.

You get what you pay for, this is better than the 17-70 though.

aircanman;8395772
I think the main reason the 17-70 gets better reviews is down to its price and the fact that its not a Canon, the main manufacturers always get a hammering because they charge a so called premium.

Was playing with this on my friends D50 earlier tonight (he's a semi-pro photographer) - cracking lens. I've no knowledge about RGB as a retailer though so I won't vote hot or cold.

I bought a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 (Nikon fit) off them a few months ago and they are reliable.

.
I disagree. The 15-85 is a relatively expensive canon and gets good reviews. The 17-85 is flawed in a number of ways and gets mediocre reviews.

The good reviews of the 17-70 OS HSM I've read are mostly based on test data. 2.8-4 isn't bad, there are plenty of L lenses that are constant F4.
colonel;8395399
no, the new 17-70mm OS has a new ED and a new ALD element over the old non-OS version.
It has vastly better reviews then the canon 17-85mm
17-70mm also has better build quality then 17-85mm

@ Kiwikeen, you win, this list for Sony alpha compats only shows 131 lenses.........
http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/lenses.php?ov=1#zooms
I am aware M42 lenses can be mounted on other makes, although I do recall some infinty focus problems on some Nikons.
@garibaldi, the list above shows that there is a decent amount of glass out there for Sony's, not as far behind Canon as you inferred.

You're right there is plenty of glass out there. In fact I would agree that this would satisfy most photographers. Thanks for pointing that out.

I normally like to not follow the crowd but on photography I bought into the Canon system quite a while ago when I had very little money and was offered some cheap Canon kit. I love photography more than I love the kit but it helps to understand the kit so you can buy on an informed basis. It is so expensive to move from one system to another and to be honest it wouldn't change my love of photography or my pictures.
Did a little more research on the camera which may help others decide. This is quite a good value full frame camera. In fact it's probably the most affordable (cheapest full frame on the market). One of the advantages of full frame that many see is the reduced depth of field at the same aperture so the images appear to "pop" a little more easily. Although the disadvantage is you have to take care with focussing accuracy.

You can print probably up to A2 sized printed with this amount of pixels (pretty impressive)
ISO range and performance is not leading edge but pretty good.
Only one cross type focus point (more accurate as it measures for both horizontal and vertical contrast) ie it captures the focus more reliably. Most cameras at this price range and cheaper have all their focus points cross type.
Frame rate is a little slow if your are expecting to use it for sports at 3fps but ample for landscapes and for those who don't shoot 15 fames and hope to capture a good one!
No live view - but that's of debatable value - some love it some never use it.
Good IFS built into the camera at 4 stops.
Overall a really good camera but technically not considered by the experts as good as the Canon 5D II (but much cheaper). So as I said if you have other equipment that will fit, this is a very good camera and a very good deal.

Hope that helps a little.

Makes perfect sense to me, well put

I think you'll find, even if you include older Minolta AF lenses, that Canons EF lens lineup easily has a wider range of quality glass

The EF range also has the added advantage that every single EF lens ever produced (132 different lenses and counting ) will function 100% on any EOS body

Ignorance is bliss indeed, you are aware that both Canon and Nikon DSLR's are also able to make use of the majority of Carl Zeiss M42 glass

It's certainly not something unique to Sony, as you mistakenly make it out to be

Thanks KIWIKEEN for the comment. I was lucky enough to borrow a Carl Zeiss lens a long time ago, unfortunately it was when I owned an old Canon film SLR. Very nice.

J9STL: I wasn't being provocative I was just pointing out that Nikon and Canon have a greater selection of glass and accessories for those who get bitten by the photography bug. Shame you felt you had to respond in the way you did.
