But while Ripley’s fame spread, it was the researcher and linguist Norbert Pearlroth who from 1923 to 1975 spent most of his days at the New York City Public Library discovering the facts and anecdotes that would make Ripley’s column a continuing phenomenon.

Pearlroth discovered “at least 62,192 amazing facts and anecdotes,” wrote Time. “One skeptical reader wrote 27,167 double-checking letters to sources and never found an unsubstantiated item.”

I might just get this.

I will ALWAYS regret swapping one of the original publications (Back in 1959) for a bag of bl**dy marbles. (WHAT was I thinking??).

No idea what these are like now though.
Doubt if they'd be as good as that one.

Fascinating read here.

Definitely worth a fiver rizla. Plenty of little cuttings that will amaze you. If you search on play.com you can usually find some of the older annuals at less than a fiver 2nd hand in the playtrade listings. Although a few people charge silly prices for them.
