Hi,
Great spot for a very nice radio. I have one, and having the charger built in is great - also, it is not too heavy on batteries - if you use good rechargeables. Excellent sound too.

Regards,

White.

Always like Roberts products (even if there's no wooden casing here) - heat added (going to have a very close look at it now)
#3
sounds like a good one, gave it a try!
#4
At last the prices are becoming sensible.
#5
Hot! Ordered.

£49.99 on Amazon. Good spot! Ordered
#7
I have the original '59' without the built in charger which is great for radio 5 live and radio 4. Not so good for music as it's mono and lacks bass.
#8
Nice find. Roberts are one of the leading manufacturers of radio equipment and have been for years. Ordered! :)
#10
****! Just going out to drink cider in the sun - no time to order this now - guaranteed to expire in the next couple of hours :(

Was thinking about the Pure One Mini deal at Richer Sounds but have gone for this instead. The Pure works out at £55 by the time you add the rechargeable battery pack, whereas the Roberts should by sub-£35 (inc rechargeables). The downside though is that the Pure One is DAB+, and as far as I can tell, the Roberts is not. Still, by the time anything is being broadcast in DAB+ hopefully a good portable will be sub £20 - i.e. the current difference in price.....

Have some more heat! Thanks to OP.

Don't feel too good about yourself just yet ;)

The charger pack can easily be replaced with rechargeable batteries...no not the C size expensive ones that cost £6 odd for 2, and you need 6. You can just use standard AA ones and use AA to C converters that cost about £4 for 6.

I picked up a Pure One Elite and converters for £50 delivered so not too bad.

This is a better deal though if your only using your radio for talk stations
#13
Also, using AA instead of C batteries doesn't have any negative implications of a reduced charge due to size. Rechargeable C batteries have a similar MAh (around 2500) as good quality rechargeable AA batteries.
#14
AA and C batteries are both (i think) 50.5mm tall - if your C rechargeable has 2500mAh capacity, then its really just an AA in a bigger casing.

Both Aldi and Lidl Cs are 4Ah or over.
#15
great stuff hopefully it will be delivered

Thank you so much for posting this. Ordered one for my mother.

I wouldn't buy a DAB radio for music unless it was future-proofed with DAB+ (as well as having FM which most do).

However, this seems to be a good option for voice. Sensible price, good size and the built-in battery charger makes it even better. I got some rechargeable batteries on 7dayshop for £6 plus quidco: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_3&products_id=109462

You can see reviews of said batteries on Amazon here but they are cheaper direct from 7dayshop.

Quite pricey though - I bought one of the original Gemini 59s for under £20 a couple of years, following a post on here. I'd have thought DAB radios would have come down in price but they're still being held artificially high it seems.

Good radio.

I expect its down to the economics of scale.
Since DAB is only used now in the uk there is not alot of research of number for a large production run for the digital radios. A scandinavian country has binned dab and germany have put dab+ on a keep alive budget (ie no money for expansion)

I am afraid we are stuck with high prices unless other countries decide its a good idea to go dab

Just about what i was looking for, needed a smallish radio for camping weekends, and was wondering if anyone could tell me if this would do the trick, 30 quid seems very tidy ???

Thanks in advance

#21
Its coming up at 49.99 for me in basket too :(

Yeah but the Glowtime is more of an alarm clock radio, i was actually thinking of buying the Ecologic as a xmas gift for my uncle.

I ordered one of these yesterday at 29.99. I was careful to check the credit card value, and it was definitely £29.99.

However, I have just checked my conformation e-mail and see that rather than an Ecologic 1, I have in fact apparently ordered a Gemini 59 (which is the older model without rechargeable battery support).

I have had no more e-mails since my order confirmation, but I've just checked my order status on the HMV web site and see it has changed to "Item deleted - we are trying to obtain this item from alternate sources".

Has anyone alse had this happen, and what does this mean? Are we still likely to get a radio? Will it be the Ecologic or the Gemini. It all seems a bit of an up-****......

I am not sure exactly which radio this is. The main title says Gemini, but the description title says Ecologic Gemini, and the description itself is clearly for the Ecologic......

I called HMV and they confirmed that my order is still in place, and that they are effectively just waiting for stock - which should arrive late this week. I think I'll just hang on and see what happens. If it turns up next week and it's an Ecologic then all well and good. If not then I guess I'll be having some heated discussions with HMV.....
