Peter Weller stars in this urban sci-fi Western as Murphy, a good cop who literally gets shot to pieces while on duty and winds up reborn as a crime-fighting machine. An ambitious executive at OCP, the corporation running the futuristic city of Detroit, fuses Murphy's torso with bulletproof steel limbs and rewires his brain with computer chips so he will have no will of his own. Murphy's former partner tries to help RoboCop remember his human past, but his circuitry blocks whatever dim memories remain. Luckily, a chance encounter with one of his killers wakes up the human essence in RoboCop, causing him to rebel against his programming and commence on a one-cyborg mission of vengeance that leads all the way to the top of OCP. This second English-language film by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is unremittingly brutal, darkly comic, and filled with bits of clever satire and pathos. A special highlight is the hilariously incompetent ED-209, RoboCop's main rival in the department of automated law enforcement. Considered by many critics to be one of the best films of its genre, ROBOCOP was followed by several sequels and a 1994 TV series.

I thought this was a great movie back in the day, Yes it is a little dated now but that can be said of alot of 80's movies.
#9
Robocop is a VERY bad example of how to release a movie on blu-ray. Avoid, even at this price.

That's it's problem - it isn't

If you already own the DVD, whacking it into an upscaler such as the PS3 will produce almost literally the same results.

True.

It's a waste of time and money buying this. A very bad transfer.

They have released Robocop on blu-ray twice.
The 1st edition were very poor and the new ones are much better. I have it and watched it on a 92" screen I must admit it wasn't great but it's much better than dvd upscaled version. For the price you cant go wrong.

I've got a PS3 and have a DVD and blu-ray version of Close Encounters. The difference is significant and definately not 'almost literally the same results'. Upscaled DVD is often quoted to be 60% of blu-ray and I wouldn't disagree with that.

I agree that the difference wouldn't make me go out and replace my whole DVD collection. It's not like the difference between color and black and white. Blu-rays are still overprice IMO. However, now they are getting more affordable then I'm going to start replacing my classics....and Robocop was a groundbreaker at the time...at £5 I'd buy it again.

But if UR happy with DVD then you can reap the benefits of DVDs for £3 or less at the moment. UR on a winner I suppose.

Having said all that I have a feeling you might just have been talking about Robocop specifically. I'd be amazed if they screwed up the transfer that badly though.

If you are going for the 3 for 2 deal
and not sure about Robocop
Picking a different title at £8.98 will not change the price
as the cheapest item is free

Seen lousy reviews about the transfer but
its still an excellent price at £7.97 so heat added

Also recommend the Pinocchio 70th anniversary Blu-ray edition at £14.98 also from Amazon,
out today and mine arrived today, its a 2-disc Blu-ray edition with outer card sleeve
and a DVD disc too.
2-disc Blu-ray and 1 disc DVD combination (3-discs)
Though dare not open it.

Only £1 more than the 2-disc DVD edition
and £3 cheaper than next best price
(EDIT: I fibbed £15.99 at Play is next cheapest for Pinocchio)

Original thread here
Think that thread also deserved more heat

I am talking about Robocop specifically, not all blu-ray disks are created equally - transfers will vary greatly depending on the effort put into it and the source material. And I'm a blu-ray convert, I only buy standard dvd nowadays for things like TV shows that aren't or won't be released on BR

Picture quality of the 2nd release is only average (better than the 1st though) http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1086/robocop_fox.html
Good price, but I'll probably give it a miss until the inevitable bells & whistles version comes out later (a la Terminator 2 Skynet Edtn).

Robocop: Book him!
Sgt. Reed: What's the charge?
Robocop: He's a cop killer.
#37
While not the greatest transfer it is still better than an upscaled DVD, IMO. It has no extras on it so if you want those get the dvd.
#38
Would consider this if I didn't already have the dvd
