Oh, for fork's sake...

On the serious side - not the lightest or plushest fork on the market, but a fundamentally sound buy, especially at that price.

Fork me that's a deal!

great price!

For fork sake with the puns

ooh, very tempted. I'm mid-build and just bought a headset and stem, on the hunt for a cheap fork. This is a touch more than I can really afford this month (was going to just drop £30 or so on some rigid ones for now) but very tempting, especially since CRC gave me a £30 voucher because they compromised my card details.

This isn't a very good fork...the Dart 2 and 3 don't get much good said about them.

If your thinking of buying this then get a second opinoin on the bikeradar forum.

How did you know it was CRC specifically? Quite hard to prove. I've stopped ordered from CRC until they sort out their PR disaster and let everyone know what has and IS happening with the integrity of their online systems.

Dart is fine unless you like your fork to actually.. move. maybe if you're fat they work?
(i have a Dart2, SID and Reba btw)
#11
Supposedly only £30 here:

Although that seems too cheap?
#12
That is only the rebound kit not the full fork.

Oh yeah, thought it seemed daftly cheap.
#14
for your average rider this fork is more than sufficient...

if you intend on jumping off the side of moutains or getting stuck into some of the more serious trials then probably not for you...

I think people forget not everyone who will be looking for a "well priced fork" needs it to withstand ridiculous amounts of punishment
#15
oh the Dart is tough. vastly stronger than the cheap Suntours etc. i just don't think it works (well). maybe i got a bad one, but it had a light spring so it should have moved more. was meaning to take it apart and try to figure out how to make it plusher.. imho you should seriously consider spending more on something like the Tora or Recon posted a few days ago (on-one deal i think). this is cheap, but i'd rather have a rigid fork than suspension that hardly does anything. maybe the Dart3 is better or RS have improved things in 3 years, i don't know. check some reviews and see if it suits your usage.

Guys,
I have Specialized Rockhopper Comp 2009 with it's stock "RockShox Tora SLite, 100mm, Alloy steerer".
Would this Dart be an upgrade or downgrade for me?

Thanks a lot.
#17
Dart is downgrade from Tora; its RockShox entry level series whilst Tora is the series above for XC use...
#18
They're fairly similar, although I posted this, I bought Tora SL's. I'd stick with what you have.
#19
I have A Gt Agressor 09 with Suntour SR M 2025 forks would these be better if they fit?

which suntours are you referring to as most suntours are better than a dart 3, the suntour epicons are in a differant league to the Dart 3 and even the XCR's are way better.
#21
fair heavy fork, OK if you just want something better than utter rubbish basically...

the old entry level rock shox used to be quite light but these weigh a ton... 7lb or something

Cro if you looking for a noticable upgrade then you want to spend a little bit more and go for something like the Rockshox Tora 302 or 318 which can be had in verious sales for about £100- £150 if you keep you eyes open.

Impossible to prove if they try to avoid it. However, in this case, they admitted that they'd been compromised and asked customers to contact them if they'd been a victim of fraud. I contacted them, and they gave me a £30 gift voucher to try and win my trust back.

Still paid the outstanding balance of that order with Paypal to be on the safe side though :-)

It wouldnt seem logical spending as much as that because the bike cost that.

If you have a GT aggressor, then it would make a very good bike with the superior fork....GT's have very strong frames and are ideal for up grading and the best up grade for any half decent frame is a good fork.

The GT XCR has the same frame as yours....but it cost £700 because it has better fork and other components.

it may be worth it if you ride offroad - i'd need to know more - because (other than tyres) it's the biggest improvement you can make. and £150 is where forks start to work a bit. you'd normally spend £400-600 to get a £150 ish fork included with a bike.

about the Suntours above ive never used one, it's very possible their forks are better than low end RS. all i was saying was the Dart seems strong (won't break, steel) but doesn't work (heavy, suspension is rubbish). hence this deal is overheated imho.

edit: just don't cut the steerer short. use spacers. so it'll still be good for another bike/resale.

I think its worth it just to have lock out and disc mount for future upgrade as my Suntours dont have that.

I just bought some suntour xcr forks for £60. 2011 model, brand new off ebay. Is that a good deal?

It's about the going rate. £55 plus delivery. Hated my stock Suntour XCM's, heavy and too bouncy - but let us know how you get on with the XCR's.
#31
Thanks. I just need a new star nut then Il be giving it a try. They r oil damped and seem nice so far. They look good and the lockout seems to work well. I got them off eBay if any1 is interested.

Is it me or are they meant to come out without damage, mine broke trying to get it out to put in new forks. Only £1.80 in halfords for a new one though and I got a tin of GT85 half price.

Well I did try to get mine out. I used a pipe cutter to cut the part the old star nut was in off the steerer tube. then i used a long piece of wood and a hammer to tap it down but the star nut got mangled on the bur where I cut the tube. If i had filed it down it would have been easy to salvage. I still haven't managed to get on my bike to test the forks because my hydraulic brake are playing up. I've turned back to the v-brake for now with a look to going mechanical disc when the pads wear down, good idea or not?

Ye I thought so, it was no biggy as there only peanuts to buy.
#36
Indeed. Haven't fitted my Tora's yet, but pretty sure I'll be needing a trip to Halfords for a new nut too.
#37
I've got them on now, I weigh 12 stone and I have fully stiffened the pre-load but they're quite bouncy. Any heavier than I think I'd bottom them out. But the lock out works perfectly. I'd give em 4,5/5.. Ideal for going downhill but then no good for going up making Lock out essential. Not bad at all for £60. Suntour XCR Lo (y) get em off ebay if you're on a budget, bargain.

I weigh arround the same, I dont think you should stiffen the preload just because there bouncy. The recomeded sag for them is 15-25mm when your on the bike in your normal riding postion I think. I adjusted mine to 15mm which is minimum sag. I tried them on the weekend at my local MTB trail and they worked very well even on the blue trail well chuffed with them :)
#39
Dont use a star nut the headlocks work much better.
#40
Yeah they seem fine without the preload right up. I just didn't expect them to be so bouncy. They seem to have worn in now and are very good. It definitely makes for easier riding with lockout on. I've nearly completed my new bike, Just need a good set of brakes. I'm using v-brakes temporarily and I have a £50 budget for brakes. What would you guys do? I'm looking at various mechanical disc brakes at the moment.
