seems to in vista.

theres no reason to pay for dvd playback software, there are plenty of free codecs/media players out there.

Vista has a very good mpeg2 decoder included. XP requires you to supply it with one, which most people do without even realising it. There's no need to pay for a decoder. Some might like to buy DVD software, but even so, this wouldn't be my first choice.
