We will launch a Christmas scheme for people on low incomes to buy up to a total of 36 1st or 2nd Class Stamps in one purchase at 2011 prices – 46p for 1st Class and 36p for 2nd Class.

The scheme will launch on 6 November 2012 and will be in place until the last posting date before Christmas for 1st Class stamps.

People on pension credit and employment and support allowance (or incapacity benefit) are eligible for participation in the scheme.

Eligible customers will need to provide evidence that they are in receipt of benefits, (eg, the Annual Uprating letter or the Award Notice letter from the DWP). Stamps will be available for purchase from any of the 11,801 Post Office branches. Royal Mail will write to every UK household later in the year explaining the scheme and how it works.

Wow people here are a bunch of moronic assholes...

Would you rather be some non welfare state? I will agree that the current system royally sucks, but I was out of work for 6 months a couple years back and if the system wasn't there I would have been **** and homeless since I have no family to fall back on.

Now I have my own business and push into the higher income threshold and I pay back the taxes, I've paid back a damn site more than I took as do a LOT of people who need that support for short periods.
Are some people abusing the system? Yes, of course they are.
Is it actually abused as badly as tabloid crap claims? Hell no, not even close. The only reason you should believe this rubbish is if you believe turning a light on when going to the toilet can cause cancer...

Because of stupid morons with your point of views innocent people get penalised. For example the current ATOS scandal.
Granted I'm a bit biased as ATOS really screwed over my mother, but I'd like to ask anyone to read the report they made and not laugh or cry. One of the reasons they put as she is fit for work is she picked up a magazine up from a table, while sat down...

Terrible Idea.
The cost should be the same to all.
I am/was a royal mail supporter..............shame on you royal mail.........i will take my custom elsewhere.
These type of schemes are why the country is on its knees.
Do well at school, get a good job and save for a rainy day/pay into a pension scheme,
This scheme is for the thick, lazy and selfish, at the expenceof others.
Cold,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,very cold from me.

'These type of schemes are why the country is on its knees.'

I wasn't aware it was 'on it's knees'. Is WW2 still on, are you facing invasion? Is the Black Death sweeping through the towns and villages? Are the vikings charging about the place burning and pillaging?

Or has there just been a 2% drop in average income in the past half decade? Stop reading tabloids, and perhaps base your worldview on facts.

Totally agree. How incredibly stupid, lazy and selfish of people to become suddenly disabled by an illness...

What is the standard price of a 1st class stamp? At my work we sell six of these beauties for £3.60. Not that far off the RM discount. Now if only you could get a staff discount on them...

2nd Class stamps for letters weighing up to 100g will increase from 36p to 50p.

60p for a normal stamp 1st class, I work at the post office and usually get information about these things way before they happen on our weekly update magazine, however nothing as been said about this and the launch for christmas stamps are about 6 weeks away

I agree with what you are saying, but I like the idea of my mum who is a pensioner, not worrying too much about "How much it will cost to post her Christmas cards". She posts quite a few and at 86 she still enjoys sending them.
Hot for me.

This sounds like an expensive way to antagonise the company's user base.

They will be selling them on for a profit! (_;)

Companies already get a discount as Franking costs are always Lower than stamp costs.

All RM are doing here is taking the public backlash on stupid price hikes a few months ago and trying to look caring and cuddly. In reality they are showing themselves for being money grabbing gits that got it wrong. If they had managed the company properly then the finances would be in a better state to avoide such huge hikes.

Oh goody I just noticed RM will write to every household about this scheme. Why not save the cost of paper and print costs and offer a 10% discount for everyone at Christmas.

What's the betting that someone will work out some kind of scam/loophole to buy more than the allowed allowance of stamps. It will then hit 2000degrees on here and heaps of people will offer them for sale on the FS/FT board.

just another cack handed scheme to patronise the disadvantaged, who have to jump through hoops to prove they are the deserving poor to save a few pence, the genuinely hard up can't afford stamps whether they are 36p or 50p, as a cheap publicity stunt why not just give a free book of a dozen 2nd class stamps and a packet of xmas cards to these 2nd class citizens and be done with it

how on earth are low income families/people supposed to pay full price on envelopes and sellotape?

come on Royal Mail!, also you should collect the mail from their dole office when they sign on, save them having to go all the way to the Post Office

Terrible! Trying to gain moral credit by patronising people. RM are terrible!
Maybe if they cut the staffs over inflated pension then they could provide a decent service at the lowish cost we have received for decades

I think this scheme should be open to all, not just low income. I think it's fair to say nearly every average working joe is feeling the pinch these days and opening this to all would've been a better move on RM's part imo. Not just pensioners/people on benefits. After all, who's paying for it all? (benefits etc,) and who never gets any of the perks of paying for supporting the people who can't support themselves?

Bad move RM.

It is demeaning -- especially for pensioners and the disabled. Produce evidence to show you're needy and we'll knock £5 off your £20-odd purchase of stamps.

I agree this is merely a publicity stunt for Royal Mail. Can I just make a point on the negativity towards people out of work - last Christmas I was made redundant, took me until march to get back into employment, I'm now lucky to have a good job, however those few months were the worst few months of my life, I wasn't proud of myself, I hid away from public events incase the 'what do you do for a living' question came up, I was skint and could not see an end to it all, I felt worthless, spending 6 hours a day job searching. They're not all bad on benefits you know, and one day karma might bite you on the ass just like me.

My first thought was ffs, this sort of thing does my nut in, almost as bad as people on certain benifits being able to cross the toll bridge into wales for free - why!
