The brand was introduced in 1998 by Russian Standard, a company founded in 1992 by the businessman Rustam Tariko. The new product quickly established itself in the Russian premium vodka market as the first luxury brand with a Russian—as opposed to Soviet—identity.
Two years after launch Russian Standard Original surpassed all imported premium vodkas on the Russian market. A broad international expansion was then launched. The Russian Standard Platinum was introduced in 2001, and the luxury brand Imperia in 2004.
In 2005, global sales passed the 1,000,000 case mark.
In 2006, a new $60 million state-of-the-art distillery was opened in Saint Petersburg. The distillery occupies an area of 30,000 square meters. The facility produces 4 million cases per year, at a rate of 22,500 bottles per hour
