I know people have mentioned it before about buying a gift voucher to defeat Ryan Air card charges but I now have a new twist.
Unfortunately it seems that you cannot redeem the remaining "credit" on a voucher so even if it ends up cheaper than the card charges you are still losing out.

The cheapest voucher is £25 which is annoyingly high.

However I noticed you could buy in other currencies so bought in kronors as I am familiar with the currency 250kr = £20 saving me £5!!

This worked great so I got 2 return flights for £20!!

I have now noticed that you can also buy one for 80 polish zlottys which is 17.96!!

Using the Gift voucher has been on here before but I have never seen anyone suggest you buy with polish currency.

I got my Visa Electron card from the Halifax. I opened an 'EASYCASH' account using a driving license as photographic ID

Hi
I have got a Visa Electron. I read somewhere that if you have a current Abbey account (with a Visa debit card) then you can request a Visa Electron to run from the same account ie/ no need to set up a new bank account. Abbey weren't too willing, they said that the Electron card wasn't accepted in many places and it's a card they usually issue to people that can't run a bank account properly (or that's how I interpreted it). Once I said the only reason I want it is so that I don't have to pay an extra £32 every time I fly with Ryanair with my family they sent me one (that wasn't without hassle - so be prepared to be patient). Good luck.

I opened an account with Abbey and on the form you can request the type of card you want, so I requested a visa electron for both me and my partner!! Prior to that I used a visa electron card that I got from the post office - the pre pay travel type!

The Visa Electron Gift Card from Barclays and form Mint - costs £3 to buy the card. Works like a normal debit/credit card. I bought one just for use with Ryanair.

For what it's worth....

Smile (who are really the co-op anyway), allow either a visa electron or a visa debit with their current account. I've asked them to issue me a visa electron on my existing account and they don't seem to be refusing!

Notice that Ryanair have just dropped their £10-5/ticket offer to £5-2.50.

I looked up info on the Post Office Visa Electron and they also call it a Travel Money Card but under fees and charges it says

............................

Card Issue Fee Free
Other initial fees 1.5% commission for loading Sterling (£) card, subject to a minimum fee of £3, maximum fee of £20.
0% for euro (€) card, 0% for US Dollar ($) card.

Thanks for this tip, I've just applied for an account with them for the electron card

Just used the gift voucher tip, and only had to pay £1.54 on top of the price of my flights - chuffed as a chuffing chuff, didn't realise that the payment card fee was so much now.

Does the money saving work with a foreign currency gift card? I noticed that it says foreign currency values are converted back to Sterling at flight purchase.

The Ryanair site is not accepting my Barclays Gift Card, even though it clearly states 'Visa Electron' on the card. Have Ryanair decided to block this card now?

Hi,

I am having exactly the same problem with my Barclays Git card.

It arrived today, so i activated it and proceeded to book my Ryan Air flight, but it is not letting me pay for the flights with this card!!!

I have phoned Barclays and they say that everything i am doing with this card is correct and that i would have to contact Ryan air if the card is not working....how much is that going to cost me.

I now have a card with £140 on it that is no use to me at all.....rubbish

Have a question, I am now looking to book flights and thinks its crazy to pay an extra £10 to book them.

Flight total is £29 so if I buy a voucher for £25 would I have to pay a charge on the extra £4???

Thanks
Vicky

yes you would, sucks that doesn't it. However try one of the more expensive currencies, maybe they are closer to £30.

I think i read elsewhere that as the gift cards are not chip and pin they cannot be used.

Does anyone know can the vouchers be used to cover the cost of baggage?

Anyone reading this thread wondering whether to get a paypal card for ryanair: - I've just found out first hand that it doesn't work with them :(
#25
I used both a Barclays and Mint Gift card in the past fine - maybe they've realised the trick! Dammit.....

The only payment method to use with Ryanair now to avoid the admin fee is to use a prepaid mastercard. Click here to get a free fairfx card to save those £5's!!

Almost 3 years old now :) Can you still avoid fees by using Gift vouchers ?

I don't know I will have to check, anyone know?

You can avoid them now by using a Ryanair pre-paid card.
