This is the 8-core, 16-thread, top-of-the range Ryzen model from the recent releases. This is the cheapest I've seen it - usually retails about £480-490. It is a phenomenal all-round processor - if all you want to do is gaming, the intel i7700K is (currently) faster for that + cheaper, but this is a better all-round chip if you do CPU-intensive work.

The price has only come down this week: https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/AMD-YD180XBCAEWOF-8-Core-Desktop-Processor/product/B06W9JXK4G?context=search - I haven't seen an announcement about a reduction in RRP.

I have the 1700X on MSI X370 carbon and i wished id saved £120+ on the CPU and got the 1700 as that overclocks to 4Ghz without much issue and comes with a cooler and then saved another £70 and got a MSI B350 Tomahawk. Be aware that all motherboards seem to be a work in progress with loads of issues especially with memory.

Get the 1700 instead better value

yup! 1700 is the winner. The 1800X is just a binned 1700.

Price gouging on early adopters. Always happens when a new line of hyped parts launch. Every shop sets their prices at full RRP so they enjoy big margins whilst still making good sales. Once sales slow down, then they start competitive pricing.

and for gaming, amd has yet again produced garbage which is bad for us as intel can charge whatever they want.

Most 1700s can't hit above 3.8 (only about 25% can go above this stable), but I agree the 1700 is the best bang for buck! I got the 1700 myself and coming from a 4670k I couldn't be happier!

It's a good price, but as pointed out still expensive compared to the bargains that have been going around for hte 1700X/1700 CPU's.

If you don't need 8c/16t but still fancy a go with Ryzen you can get the R5 1600 for £180 now, check the link HERE! Now that really is a bargain. :)

And yet Intel has suddenly brought forward their new cpus & platforms by at least 3 months, implying price drops on current ones in due course...

Intel can't do what amd, has done - which is smarter and cheaper; by design.

The consumer, hedt, server and embedded ryzen platform sockets where known for over a year, but the whole naples, snowy owl and zepplin code names where confusing but stupidly simple :P In some ways, doing building block cpus was started by bulldozer - which was a good idea, besieged by an awful execution of design :(

Back to intel, they are in a mess, with cpu's partly(well mostly due) to no competition, since the phenom II 1100t days. Its new architecture will be like zen in many ways: building block style. if they want to innovate then they will bring many low power cores, mobile sized cores to the desktop. w10 can run (os only) quite fast on arm mobile cores; so why not bring this to the desktop.

Errr intel has dropped prices, and forwarded their upcoming platform and chips. and increased core count. I'm not sure how that statement of yours makes any sense given whats happened ..

Yep and already specs on yet another motherboard release with the 300 series, I don't know about you guys but I'm getting sick of intel releasing a new chipset motherboard every year with nothing but the most basic upgrades, it's become a joke it's like there grasping at straws while scalping joe public and now it just aggravates me to see another.
the complete blitz of z270 boards released overpriced pieces of junk blanketing the market with an obscene amount of boards with asus being the worst separating them by as little as a usb 3 header and Wi-Fi module, what a joke.

yep, its not that intel is worried, its more like amd's release of garbage just gives them an excuse to sugar coat something they already have and charge more for it.

To be fair the mobo makers make very little on each board. Thats why ecs, abit and sapphire(mobo unit) went up in smoke.

Oh come on they're making plenty, built by machine using cheaply bough Chinese components running all day spinning out boards oh they're making plenty of money, profit is high but here's the thing right now on amazon most sales on the top 100 mobo's are for H series and B series both intel and amd, there are more z170 boards in the top 100 than there are z270 and that's just in the u.k. so that should tell them something.

The market is massively shrunk since the 2000s heyday. Note that i'm not talking about intel's desire to produce a new chipset per 2 cpu generations

Ye I agree with that, imo they brought it on themselves and there really doing themselves damage now prices are just to high and it pushes people to the used market and were all recycling old systems that are still just as good but now these companies make little to no money where if they'd priced better then it would not be worth shopping the used market, prices are up as a result sales are down and its there own fault for the greed increasing profit margins, there's enough used gear out there for us all and there's little innovation being done, plenty of greed and corruption but not much else.

Nvidia sales plummeted this year which is why all the price drops and promises of refreshes and volta this year hoping an injection or performance will make them money, blind to the fact that it's all about the money if the 1070 was priced better or the titan which should really only be a $500 card then I'd be buying graphics cards every gen, maybe not titans but 1070's at £250-£275 for sure the 1060/1160's should be the sweet spot card at £175-£200 yet is some cases there almost £300 asus at it again with 3 fans no less lol.

intel are also in trouble selling overpriced items people can't afford and issues with 10nm, now with amd upping the game they're in bad shape trying to push through x299 which will not be great and cost wattage with there lowest chip at around 125 watts where ryzen is 95w and still these morons haven't caught on nobody can buy these items the longer you charge these prices the less money you make we all buy used systems and are happy therefor we don't need to buy new even when they do drop prices.

I don't think personally consumer £250-300 mobo is warranted. Nvidia has massively overpriced their cards, nearly everything they have ever done outside their gfx cards has been a flop. Who remembers their nvtv card ?.. :D

the downward spiral of desktop, is down to tablets and smart phones.Yet, intel and nvidia jacked their prices up, which killed the sector even further. Old school economics.
