Sainsbury's Curry Sauce, Basics, an amazing 4p!

This beats the old Asda curry sauce for 6p. 50% cheaper in fact, saving a whole 2p!!! :-)

Will try it tonight to see if it's any good and report back.

That should, of course, say 33% cheaper than the Asda sauce, thanks to jocksteeluk for pointing that out!

2p from 6p is 33% but anyway that is quite a good deal for anyone wanting to knock up a quick curry.
#2
if its half decent to throw on me chips, job done!

Look forward to an in depth review :p

Oh, my maths has gone haywire! Anyway, just finished eating and it's not Lloyd Grossman, but it's not bad. Mild/medium hot, but you can always add some spices if you like it hotter.

you know the funny thing about this deal is id bet the jar itself costs more that what the product is being sold for and you can guarantee the ingredients do so it makes it even more or a bargain.
#5
:w00t:OH MY GOD:idea:LEFT OVER TURKEY:thumbsup:
#6
ok for 4p you can't complain but it tastes too much like school curry... (sharwoods is much nicer for 74p - half price)
its the same stuff as you can find in morrisons. this stuff has to be subsidised 4p for the jar is quite good fun if you're into jam making :)
doesn't have any awful ingredients either if you are looking for those sort of things...
#7
Saw this the other day but opted for Patak's.
#8
ive tried a couple of the sauces from this range and they are rank...runny dog pooh probably tastes better

:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t: You're not wrong!

If it's anything like the Asda stuff it'll be great as the base for a curry by adding other stuff.
A meal for a quid! Can't be bad!
Great find!

mmmmmmmmmmmmm :whistling:
#15
don't knock it til ya try it.

I was in sainsburys today and did not know about this deal so missed out on trialling it.

like others have said:

- worth the 4p for the jar alone.
- could be good for a base for your own creation
- should be perfectly acceptable to splat over some chips

Hot! :whistling:

Fine for dog food maybe, Pataks is king when it comes to ready made curry sauces.

Is anyone going to change the title of this deal to "Sainsbury's Curry Sauce, Basics, an amazing 4p!" ?
#19
Just looking at the jar makes me want to throw up
#20
If you actually LOOK at the flipping ingredients you'll find that it contains no rubbish, and all rather decent ingredients.

Great to add extra spices/veg to for your own curry.
#21
:whistling: this is a good deal if you need a glass jar, just toss the sauce LOL :whistling:

Oh boy, my spelling has gone the same way as my maths! Title changed.

Was shopping in Sainsburys the other day and saw this. The thing is though, the rest of the stuff they sell is generally more expensive than tesco, asda etc. IMO the average shopping bill would be cheaper elsewhere, unless you buy 100 jars of chip shop style curry sauce each week!
#24
is it worth all th:roll:e trips to the lavatory ...
#25
Why do some of you get so elitist about cheap foodstuffs? Oooh it makes me wanna throw up - don't be so childish. Go on about your Pataks and Sharwoods whatever, but there are laws in this country which make even the cheapest produce edible. Get off your high horses and try some you silly people!
#26
u dont always get what u pay for, i prefer to make a decision for myself so i'll deffo pick one up next time im in sainsburys to see how bad or good it really is....

I have been in the food buis' for many years and you are right, it has to be edible, that does not mean good!! and believe me I have sold some rubbish in my time!

Surely that should be queen? (Meena Pathak being the face of the company). ;>

I'm not really a fan of ready made curry stuff, would rather make my own but of the ones I've tried Geeta's are far and away the best. add a bit of pineapple chutney and you are set. =]

I wouldn't touch this - it's not even worth it for the bottle; it has shoulders, unlike a canning jar. (plus you'll never get rid of the curry smell - at least not if it's got any decent ingredients in). for not much more you can put your own curry sauce together in a few mins.

my wife makes her own.....MUCH better

You get what you pay for ,
This stuff MIGHT be ok for throwing over some chips but you are
kidding yourself on if you think you can make some fantastic chicken
curry thing with it.
Anyway are things that bad that you have to buy 4p jars of curry sauce !!!!
#31
ewwwwwwww 4p jars of sauce just make your own its cheaper , it costs 3 and a half penny , ive never seen own make curry sauce i saw own make pasta sauce i nealrly vomited in the trolley
#32
This is only a good deal if this "curry" sauce tastes like that stuff they put on chips and call curry sauce.

If anyone buys this to use with chicken (costing a few quid itself) then they need their head examining. That's not a balanced system. That's like using £5 PC speakers with a £5000 AV Amplifier.

Ah... the people who try to scrimp and save on things like tea bags (it's still going to cost under 5p per cup!). False economy, not worth spending the effort to save the money in the first place. Those people who go to France and buy £2 bottles of wine, saving £2 a bottle - sounds great, but you can only carry so many bottles back, saving you not much after petrol, time, etc. Go there and buy the £5/£10 bottles, saving £5/£10 a bottle instead.

Stock up on the Pataks/Geetas/Sharwoods when they're half-price instead. Incremental cost (all ingredients included) is not that much higher but the quality is a different level. IMO.
#33
Has anyone actually tried it ?
#34
Dont worry about the curry sauce just tip it out and use the jars for pickled onions thats what i did with the asda stuff
#35
Well, I tried it the other day and thought it was very nice over chips and would be an excellent base. I agree with some of the comments that some people do come over a bit 'elitist'. This is a money saving / hot deals website so this absolutely deserves to be up here. Thanks OP. Heat given.

ps Having had 2 jars (over seperate periods) I can inform you all that it has not given me the runs - I am still as full of **** as ever!!
:p

No, that would be you.

This 'sauce' is awful, absolutely disgusting - I'd rather buy a decent one or just make it myself with curry powder and fresh ingredients.

no actually it would be you.

just remember that there are several million people in this country who are not in a position to buy more expensive options and live in poverty. So enjoy yourself this Christmas time but just remember others less fotunate than you. The snobbery in this country makes me sick, to see people looking disparagingly at the contents of someone elses basket in the supermarket - how sad it must give them some weird pleasure.

and to the idiot who claims this kind of thing has damaged our restaurant trade- well as someone who lives increasingly more and more in France I'm afraid I've news for you - its more to do with terrible service, ridiculously high prices (greed), bureaucracy and weak servile people who are prepared just to take it on the chin.

Finally try reading the bloody jar before dismissing it as **** - there's nothing much harmful in it all! Just because some poor people have to buy on a budget doesn't necessarily equate to a poor diet / ill heath

and you cannot make a curry sauce any cheaper unless you are making tonnes of it - cold comfort for the families who cant afford the ingredeients or quantities

Did you vomit and miss the trolley, or not actually vomit?

what gets me is the sad idiot felt he had to look this up open the forum and write something all over something he doesnt even want.

he nearly had a thought....

it amazes me that people care more about their next luxury item purchase than the food they put in their bodies.....i just care what about what i eat, unlike most idiots in this country....unfortunately this disease hit our restaurant trade long ago

Amen to that.

just remember that there are several million people in this country who are not in a position to buy more expensive options and live in poverty.
I'm well aware of that, I live under the poverty line so I don't need lecturing on it. Making your own curry sauce costs not much more than this, will taste far better and will be made just the way you like it.

Cheap rubbish food from supermarkets isn't the answer. (no matter what the question is).

I've lived on the streets on a few occasions and just being poor doesn't mean accepting ****. Instead of fighting inequality and trying to make the world a fairer place you just want people to accept junk from supermarkets so that things never get better? Let's be glad most activists don't see things that way.

weak servile people who are prepared just to take it on the chin.
The irony.

Finally try reading the bloody jar before dismissing it as **** - there's nothing much harmful in it all!

No there isn't much harmful/unneeded in it but that doesn't make it good.

Completely unnecessary ingredients are Whey Powder and Sulphur Dioxide, and it doesn't mention what the vegetable oil is (on the plus side, the maize starch isn't modified).

I wouldn't eat ANY food from a supermarket - wether it's a basics or a "premium" line it's all low quality muck, put together cheaply through greed. It's nothing to do with snobbery, and more a case of caring about myself, the people around me and the environment. (basically the opposite of what the supermarkets care about).
#39
Can you all stop insulting each other over 4p sauce please?
Its a good job you all have different tastes, else you would be fighting instore too :whistling:
Have a great xmas all, rich or poor :santa:
#40
At 4p, I would try it, but if I didn't like it I wouldn't buy it again. I've tried quite a few of the value ranges - some I like (Tesco value jaffa cakes are good, and I like Sainsburys value cream cleaner) but some I don't (Tesco value tea bags are vile) so I'll always give it a go before I pass judgement. And anyway, its all down to personal taste, isn't it?
