Great price del. F2 drive, waiting for the same price on the F1 drive. :)
#2
EcoGreen is slower than the F1 which is still £67.82.
#3
Good price, running a pair of F1's in mt NAS box.
#4
oops wrong post
#5
As people have pointed out this is the eco F2 drive which does not run as fast as the F1 drive. The title should be changed to reflect this.
#6
Only 5400rpm but people have reported it's near silent and very cool. Might be perfect for a server environment rather than desktop?
#7
Suitable for fitting to a Sky HD box?

"Suitable for fitting to a Sky HD box? "

The 750GB & 1TB F1 were AOK. There's no reason why the F2 won't oblige. The usual Sky HD formatting procedures apply.
#9
Just ordered one as a storage drive :) heat+rep added
#10
Will this work in a Sky+ box then or is there a better alternative?

Has anyone used one of these SATA - IDE adapters?

http://www.b2cshop24.com/en/ide-to-sata-serial-ata-hdd-bilateral-adapter-converter.html?language=en¤cy=GBP

I've got an IDE CCTV system and need a silent drive for it. IDE ones attract a big premium and are hard to find these days so thinkin of using one of these.

My only concern is reliability, but given the CCTV system runs cool and has lots of free space for heat dissipation I think it should be reliable if it works in the first place.

Also is this drive suitable for a CCTV application where it will be written to regularly? I've seen others post its silent, just not sure about reliability.

Also does anyone know of a cheap NAS which does mirroring or RAID 5?
#13
wow this is blazing hot, i paid around £100 for mine

temped to get another. already got 2 lol

rep and heat dded

I got a couple that looks similar - I could never get the damn things to work though.
Same with the IDE to SD card ones.

A quick question for you Techies out there:

Will this work on a really old Dell Dimension 5150 (about 3 years old)? I think the hard drives are SATA and not SATA ii. Does this make a difference or can I simply remove my old 2nd drive (very small) and replace it with this monster!

thanks for your help.

"The SpinPoint SATA drive is capable of negotiate SATA speed at 3.0Gbps first. If the negotiation fails, the device will try 1.5Gbps negotiation automatically (according to SATA specification.)

In rare cases this speed negotiation can not be successful and the only way to connect to the bus is forced to 1.5Gbps.

A special jumper is provided for use of connecting to legacy SATA host which has problem of accepting SATA auto speed negotiation. This jumper can be used only when the SATA interface connection can not be established

The SATA 1.5Gbps Speed connector is located on the front of the device as it is shown on the below figure, the factory default is an auto negotiation mode, if auto negotiation mode failed try the force 1.5Gbps mode by installing enclosed jumper to SATA 1.5G connector."

Nope this is a 3.5" Drive, a PS3 can only hold a 2.5" Drive.
#23
so what drives are best for skyHD box then please? I own a Thompson box and would love to improve the capacity of the hard drive to get more HD stuff on the planner.

Could you tell what NAS enclosure you are using and does it support mirroring?

So if I understand this correctly, this particular drive will attempt automatically adapt itself to whatever speed it needs to and if it fails to then I have to fit this jumper. Does the jumper guarantee to work? I really can't afford to take a gamble with £60 as i have very little cash at the moment!

Thanks

You could always return it within 7 days if it doesn't work, provided its in resellable condition.

The only cost you would incurr is return postage and even that is only if they clearly state you are responsible for return postage in the terms of sale. If not, return postage would also be their responsibility.

Just buy it with a Credit Card incase they decide to be difficult, because you can then take it up with the credit card company instead.

There are NO guarantees :-( But before I bought my F1 from Scan, I checked that it supported "Force 150" (SATA 1/150) :) and I've just this minute finished testing the drive in my Dell Dimension MT 8300 - bought new in early 2003 - and there were no problems what so ever. No jumpers needed I just plug it in and it pick up all 6 partitions/drives. :)

Now I need to return the F1 back to the Quad Core setup. :)

Boogie, Mentos

Thank you for your replies. I will probably go for it now and buy it. Much appreciated.

Cheap for 1tb, but considering the amount of money you save by running this "eco" drive, you might as well just get the F1.

I think they are reputed to be quiter, in which case they would be more suitable for certain applications where performance is not paramount.

Although I'm not sure if these are suitable for CCTV/PVR's, was hoping someone could enlighten us.

In anycase, I've ordered a SATA-IDE adaptert and will try it with another SATA drive I have. If it works I will probably order this and give it a try, since noise is my paramount concern. My CCTV PVR isn't going to perform any better with a faster drive.

BTW does anyone know what the warranty is like with Samsungs?

Not sure about Ebuyer OEM warranty (normally 12 months)

With Scan you get a "full official 3 year direct warranty cover!" Worth the extra cash, I think. :)

Special Note to anyone wanting to use the drive with PCI SATA/RAID controllers. ( Like me! :-( )

"These drives are that fast they can saturate standard PCI SATA/RAID controllers. To get the best performance from these drives a card based on PCI-E or PCI-X is recommended."

Would this be worth sticking in a Popcorn hour??
