Loads of people have been waiting for this from play.com, who still haven't got any stock. The great thing this is £20 cheaper and in stock and greater quidco savings than play.com!

This monitor is currently on the PC Pro "A list" of recommended kit. See review here:

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/107303/samsung-syncmaster-226bw.html

I was in PC World yesterday and saw it at £279.99 so this is a good deal.

I have an asus 22" on order with play, but they are jerking me around with their 'security checks', never known a company take 2 days to authorise a credit card, so I may cancel that order and go for this!

anyone know if the one pcworld sell is the "s" panel? charlie

There's been a lot of fuss over this and I have the 'S' panel. Common consensus is however that there isn't any noticeable difference.

Posted: Mon May 21, 2007 8:38 pm Post subject: SAMSUNG 226BW Panel Versions

I have been looking for the SAMSUNG 226BW 22 inch widescreen monitor since it hit the market some months ago. Reading the excellent reviews in PC PRO resulting in an A-list award motivated me even more. However, having then read some of the newsgroups on the SAMSUNG 226BW on the net (e.g. http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1144130&page=49) I decided to dig a little deeper into the subject. There appears to be at least three different issues of the SAMSUNG 226BW on the market. The main difference lies in the actual panel, where three different suppliers have been identified. The “original” 226BW screen had panels made by SAMSUNG. These were the ones scoring the fine reviews in various magazines. They can be identified with an “S” on the sticker on the back of the screen. The other versions have panels made by either AU OPTRONICS (marked “A”) or CHI MEI OPTOELECTRONICS (marked “C”). These screens are inferior to ones with SAMSUNG panels.

Having originally bought an “A” screen I managed to find an “S” model in Denmark. The difference between the two screens set up side by side was enormous with the “S” model vastly outranking the “A” model. The “S” monitor was perfect as described in the PC PRO review whereas the “A” model suffered from serious back bleed and distorted colours. I luckily managed to return the “A” model to the store.

One can only guess why SAMSUNG is doing this. The polite version is that SAMSUNG has chosen three supply lines for redundancy – or to cope with high demands. The other version is that SAMSUNG wants to make an easy profit. To me this way of operating resembles “bait and switch” tricks. First you create an interest with a good product and once you have established a good reputation you switch to a product with a higher profit margin.

PS.:
In addition to the indication on the sticker on the back of the monitor the model can also be checked in the “service menu”:

To access ”Service Menu”
1. Adjust the brightness and contrast to 0
2. Press “Menu” (first button from left)
3. Press “Source” (second button from right) for 5 seconds.

Service Menu, Panel info:
- AM LCD220M1 - panel from SAMSUNG (sticker “S”)
- AU M220EW01 - panel from AU OPTRONICS (sticker “A”)
- CMO M220Z1 - panel from CHI MEI OPTOELECTRONICS (sticker “C”)

hopefully stock is starting to flow and we will see other panels come down in price

Should we regret having bought an A version and would another screen have been better? No. The 226BW, whether it’s an A or S, is still above the rest.
#15
And a bit more on the 'C' panel, plus as the below states, there are 2 versions of the 'C' panel, so that now makes 4 panels....

http://www.behardware.com/articles/673-1/samsung-syncmaster-226bw-c.html

I actually have a 'A' panel, and if I never knew about the different panels I would never have thought you could get much better. The sharpness of the screen and brightness are outstanding.
Not seen a 'C' panel, but if you go to get one I would say don't let the 'A' panel put you off.

There's another thread here that may be worth reading:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17689111&page=1&pp=30

I'm certainly more than happy with mine, well worth the money and it looks so nice in gloss black :)

this is the dell 22" all over again and samsung playing the panel lottery game, yet again lol, good luck if you get a "samsung" panel inside. knowing my luck i won't :( charlie.

quote from behardware:

Once again, we find it extremely unfortunate that this manufacturer took the liberty of having three versions of the same screen and by chance gave the press the best model. We think that each monitor version should strictly have one name.

Given that they are the same price before quidco, I would go for the Samsung over the Asus every time (even if it's an A panel).

I have already cancelled my order with Play and ordered this (based on my experience with Play I will NEVER use them for any major purchase)

:-D

Voted HOT... Just ordered mine. Would have prefered to use the collect at store, but couldn't use the discount code (and wouldn't get Quidco cash back).. so went for the delivery option instead.

GOOD FIND!!!!! - THANKS!!

I went into the store today and saw this screen, (the one in PCWorld was the A panel) i have to say it is a very nice looking screen, will be buying one.

The only good thing about PLAY is they are guaranteeing you a "S" panel.

Product Description: Samsung Syncmaster SM226BW 22" LCD Monitor ("S" Panel)
suspended#23
be careful. A lot of places are selling them as "S" panels as on the back some of the "A" panels say 226BW /S where as in fact they are A Panels. I for one own an A panel model and are well chuffed with it.

You can see my pictures of it on my website -> www.blackforce.co.uk

No good for the xbox 360.

there is no 1:1 mapping that i can find anywhere. when you set the resolution to something other than 1680x1050, it gets stretched to fill the display. so if your video drivers dont support it, then you are out of luck. which is too bad b/c i wanted to hook up my XBOX 360 to it via the VGA port when i finally get one to play GTA 4. but oh well.

Although:

Pixel 1:1 Mapping = Supported. Running any game at 1440x900 will center the resolution and give you black bars all around (top, bottom, left, right). I don't know if that is considered true 1:1 Pixel Mapping as I couldn't get the same results with any other resolution.

Shame the 360 doesn't support 1440x900.

Surely thats just widescreen resolution?
#28
This unit doesn't do 1:1 pixel mapping which is pretty essential in my eyes.

I was tempted, but now I'm gonna pass.

Oh, well...

How can play.com know for sure they are getting the 'S' panels - there is no indication on the packaging?
#32
just been into look at this and the model on display was an 'A' panel

no stock though anymore

i stand by what most people say that the "S" panel is better, quote:

I recently bought this monitor and it came with the "A" panel. From the start I noticed the colours were awful. It took me hours to get the colours right. Then I started playing BF2. I got the widescreen fix and its beautiful. However, I noticed that when the scenery changed quickly it was like the monitor could not keep up. I was not impressed since I had a 4ms NEC which did not give me this problem. It was so horribly bad that it seemed like a ripple effect from the top to bottom as it was trying to keep up with the fast paced video, I could not stand it.

Anyways I returned it at Future Shop and lucky me I got an "S" panel. Needless to say I have no issued with it and the colour is fantastic. More importantly I am not experiencing this choppy/ripple/wave lag that the "A" panel gave me.

Did I just get a bad "A" panel? I don't know but from what I've read so far, I did notice a difference from "A" to "S".

I do not normally post on forums but for the money this monitor costs, I figure I'd better put my two cents out there in case others were wondering!

I play UT and BF2 on my A panel, no problems at all. I have heard of people having problems though, and it seems turning the RTA option off on the monitor fixes the issue (Real Time Accelerator).
May help for people having trouble.
#36
so are all these A panels???

Anyone found an S?
#37
I went into my local store today and they had six left, one of which was on display.

I went into the service menu and was definitely an 'A' Panel :(

- AU M220EW01 AU OPTRONICS

I odered mine online though, so will wait and see which version I get.

That is what is printed on there website under the description for the monitor.
Maybe that is why they have none in stock, they may only be getting stock which is "S" panels.

I don't think anyone has had an 'S' panel from PCW yet, I imagine they are all 'A' panels.

- AU M220EW01 AU OPTRONICS or the like!!!!!!! :?
