Kev - this will support USB2, i'm 99.9% sure. Are you looking to use an IDE to USB cable??

Neither, this is an internal drive for the desktop. Also, i dont know why this is 124 degrees, do you people realise this is IDE and not SATA. This is a very bad price considering you could get a sata version for not much more. Probably even cheaper. This is only good if you have a very old computer that doesnt have SATA and you cannot afford an IDE to SATA adapter. Maybe less then 5% of people may fall into this category if that, so for this reason i vote this cold.

This would be better value, if you want to do almost like to like, we'll stick to Samsung brand, which will also have lightscribe AND IS SATA:

£13.99

£13.79 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/samsung-sh-s223l-bebe-22x-dvdr-8x-dvddl-dvdplusrw-x8-rw-x6-x12-ram-sata-l-scribe-black (allot of people get free delivery with them)

£16.34 http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/3100832/art/samsung/sh-s223l-22x-internal-dvd.html

£16.04 Delivered http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-SH-S223C-BEBE-16x22x6x-including/dp/B002RSNQPO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1294614004&sr=1-4

good call, only saw it was IDE after i edited post.

And btw people , avoid IDE. Compared to SATA , it's AWFUL.

Even for optical drives? Surely they're so slow that it will make no difference?

Agreed optical drives are painfully slow, installing from usb flash drive is twice as fast at least.

If you ha.ve a mobo with all the sata ports taken then this is for you

I assume you're referring to USB cables that have two inputs on a PC - the second USB plug is for supplementary power for the drive and isn't always required on 2.5" hard drives, but usually 3.5" drives require external power source.

Either way, this isn't a USB drive, so unless you're putting it in a caddy you won't be able to connect it externally.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww IDE, the worst thing ever, so glad I am never using it again. SATA 4 LYF.

Also ewwww samsung, Go for a LG, Pioneer, Lite-on (also rebadged as Sony).

IDE is fine for DVD writers as the peak data bandwidth won't reach what IDE is capable of anyway. SATA is a little easier to set up as you don't need jumpers but anyway.

Also, Sony used to use Lite-On drives until they joined forces with NEC and formed the brand Optiarc, which they later rebranded Sony as nobody knew the name.

I doubt the difference between Samsung and any other DVD drive is noticeable. Just like hard disk drives (which people often seem to have strong opinions about for completely spurious reasons) they are all mass-produced commodity products which all work to a certain level of performance and reliability.

nice thanks :)

Yes even for optical drives. Install Windows 7 via disk using an IDE cd/dvd-drive and it'll take ages.
Install Win7 via disk using a SATA cd/dvd-drive to the same HDD and it'll be ALOT faster.

Benchmarks also show this, but from a practical point of view, SATA is proven to be faster & better.

I'd be interested to know whether that's because of limitiations of IDE or because Windows 7's installer's IDE support is dire. Are you also using two drives that you cannot compare directly because they have more differences than their interfaces?

My experience is just with burning CDs, but it is reasonably extensive. I have a SATA drive and an IDE drive with SATA adaptor. I have never noticed a difference. Obviously CDs contain less data than DVDs, but the throughput is partly offset by them being spun more quickly.

I run Linux, by the way.

This is a completely bog standard price, on a completely bog standard drive. And it's not even that useful to most people, who would be better off with SATA for the same price.

COLD. The only reason anyone is voting hot is because they don't realise these things are that cheap anyway!

I am replacing my cd rom and that as a IDE cable so I presume the above one from Play.com that is SATA would be of no use ?????, any advise.

But not Lightscribe.

Lightscribe is pretty much useless, IF you can get it to work, it will only print about 50% of the time , it's extremely slow, black only and requires special discs.
