Hi,
I`ve just purchased the new model Samsung PS42Q97HDX from cramptonandmoore.co.uk.
They are selling these for £778.99, but this does includes a 3 year at home warranty which i thought was a pretty good deal. I would not consider buying a plasma without a decent extended warranty.

+£35.50 minimum delivery.

I've just bought the Q97 from John Lewis.

Used the 'Never Knowingly Undersold' promise to get it price matched and it comes with a free 5 year warranty.

Very nice telly. Do some research and you'll see plenty of people rate it quite highly fo the money.

I also took delivery of the PS42Q97HDX this week from laskys.com (who price matched the lowest online price I could find and delivered on a Saturday Free of Charge).

Lovely looking TV. Loads of adjustments to get the picture to your preference. Went for this one as the reviews said it presented the best Standard Definition picture (Sky/Freeview) amongst its peers. Using it with my Humax Freeview PVR. Lovely picture.

I upgraded from a 32" Samsung LCD and was a bit worried that going larger I would loose some quality in picture but not at all.

The lowest I found was Direct TV's for £649 online, their collection price is £699 though.

The current best I have is £829 including delivery PM'd against Empire Direct in Bradford. It is by far not the lowest price and I've still got my 28 days after delivery to find it cheaper.

You have to meet some strict criteria with JL - It has to be in stock at the place you want to PM with. It must be on display at a retail outlet with a shelf edge ticket bearing the price (Many of these online retailers have outlets but prices are higher). They tend to send people from nearby stores to check.

Don't forget to factor in that from JL you'll be getting a free 5 year warranty which on a Plasma of that size has gotta be best part of £250 - £300.

and lots of places you can get for around 700 delivered

but can't find it any cheaper. Anyone got it cheaper than that?

Also, anyone got any experience with the retailers - and particularly the after sales support if things go wrong?

I know the safe option is to try and get a JL price match but it seems to me that in a few years time they will be so much better and cheaper than now, is it really worth spending a lot on an extendered warrenty?

It was £649 when I checked last week. It seems to be a very fluid market with prices changing daily.

As for the warranty if you don't think you'll still have it in 5 years time and therefore don't need a warranty then you must have more money than sense. We are talking about a minimum £700 telly here, that would be £200 per year to own if you only had it for 3 and half years.

I'm no great fan of warranties but in this case the cost was, I think, acceptable.

If the best you can find it is £700 then compared to what I paid it's £130 for 5 years peace of mind. I still hope to reduce the cost and intend to phone a few suppliers this afternoon.

I also intend to tell JL that I want my delivery charge refunded as I collected it myself and had to wait for them to get it in stock.

I know what you are staying but there is a reason that comet (and every other similar shop) push their warranties, its because they make big money on them. The reason they make big money on them is because on average, people use them less than it costs. Its the same with any insurance but the mark up on warranties is huge.

I guess when all is said and done you need to workout for yourself whether 150 quid or so is worth it for your peace of mind.

However, the way things are going, I would guess that the large screen tv's of 5 years time will be so much better and cheaper than they are now, most people will be throwing them every few years. Plasma's have improved and halved in cost in the last year. If they halve again in the next year, that 150 quid warrenty is starting to look expensive. imho of course
