The 850 EVO is much more expensive than the 840 EVO. 1TB costs £367.82 (an extra £77.83 compared to the 840 EVO).

But with 3x the potential speed? I'd go for the 850 IMO

i don't see 300% here, more like 110%.
#15
It's not like most of you will notice the difference in real life speeds anyway.

I paid the same for this hard drive about a month ago, this is the price, have been keeping an eye for a while now. It has turned my Mac into a super machine, just hope it lasts a long time!! - I will say I notice the odd hang here and there, but it is very rare and only lasts for a second or two.

I bought one of these for the same price from Aria last month, nice fast drive with excellent software and support from Samsung and honestly I really doubt 99% of us would be able to see the difference between 840 and 850. Owned allot of SSD's and Samsung are my favourites :)

Just make sure to update to the latest firmware because of read performance degradation after a couple of months. On some of my files the read speeds had dropped to 25MB/s, while it should be at least 10x that speed (the maximum possible on the SATA-ports in my machine).

Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration Software

Samsung is releasing a new firmware and performance restoration software package for the 840 EVO and 840 EVO mSATA.
The firmware update is recommended to users who may have experienced any drop in read performance of the mentioned drives.
Running the software packages provided will first update the firmware(840 EVO : EXT0CB6Q, 840 EVO mSATA : EXT42B6Q), then scan and calibrate all existing data on the drive.

Note that the update time can be more than an hour depending on the amount of data. Please wait for the firmware update to complete before starting any other operations.

BTW: Last I looked, this could not be performed through the Samsung Magician firmware update check!

That looks more like between 1.1x and 1.3x on most of the tests.
Are you sure you aren't comparing with the 120GB EVO 840 speeds?
The 1TB EVO 840 is much quicker than the 120GB one.
#25
Honestly, the 840 is plenty quick, and the fact you're also saving 75 pounds ish, I'd go for the 840 every time.

You wouldn't notice the tiny difference in speeds, and if you did, I bet you wouldn't say they're worth the extra you paid. You could get a really nice keyboard or something for the money you're saving which I'd personally rather do.

Rapid mode can be enabled on the 840 EVO too.

The 840 EVO also has the Rapid mode.
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd840evo/overview.html
The 3x speedup shown on Vortex is rapid mode on vs rapid mode off, not 850 vs 840.
The other links you posted show only about 1.3x speedup of 850 vs 840.
