you are right, this is considerably cheaper than the original price, but i am not sure if we should be recommending it, i say this because the whole blu-ray thing is up in the air at the minute with the design only recently being set in stone.
i dont know the whole ins and outs, but i do know that a lot of the original players wont be able to run all of the new features (but will play the movie)

it is a good player though

Cheaper to get a PS3
#3
and this is directly compared to the ps3 in a number of online reviews and guess which one comes out on top...the ps3.

You would be nuts or rich to buy a Bluray or a HDDVD player at the moment( apart from games console ones).
Prices are crashing, wait to see which format comes out on top.

Not a good price...as per everyone else, especially when compared to the PS3.

personally i would wait, its still a new technology i hate blue ray but to be honest i wouldnt recommend this, not because its blue ray but the whole HD standard and the technology behind it including the HDMI inputs are changing. i seem to recall this player being HDMI 1.2 and now 1.3 is out which has some colour diferences and enhancements making this player obsolete (hence the price cut)

If you are a true HD enthusiast i would not get this but if you are just one of these people who likes to brag about having a HD setup without actually knowing if its any good i would get this player ;P

seriously though it isnt worth getting blueray or hddvd just yet the technology is far too new and the prices still way too high (remember the £1000 dvd players and the £1500 DVD recorders anyone?)

voting cold for that reason even thought 50% off is a good offer its still £250 more than it should be i hope that explanation for my vote is ok :D

Just get a PS3, its probably better quality as well.

problem with the ps3 (appart from it being an awful console) is it has been built now and thats it, whatever new standards in television inputs and HD technology come along the ps3 wont be able to keep up. so buying a ps3 as a cheap alternative isnt cheap at all infact the blueray drive was only used in the ps3 to promote their format. if it was just a standard dvd drive which is really all the console needed for the games blue ray would be dead now.

The PS3 is firmware upgradable (and will be upgraded more often than any blu-ray player). So I'm guessing that a lot of the problems that may occur will be fixed through future firmware upgrades.

Firmware doesn't add any hardware upgrades lol

You can get a HD DVD player for less than £250 now, my first dvd player was over £350 and look at DVD now!

It is pretty nuts to go buying a BD player just yet, Sony are still deciding on the standards to be used in a lot of the content (most notably the interactive stuff).

This basically means that any player bought now could be obsolete by Christmas. And by that i mean unable to use certain features of new disks

The point I was getting at is if the blu-ray spec ever changed, a firmware upgrade could be released to add a software emulation layer on top of the hardware.

the PS3 outputs DVDs at 1080p right ? I think thats the most were going to get for a while ...no ?

so then isnt it just cheaper as said to get a PS3....what does the standalone offer over the PS3 to merit the price tag ?
#16
Ridiculous price for a dvd player, whether its blu ray or hd dvd, they should be no more than about 50 notes....Its a **** take supply and demand scenario..Don't fall for it...

At the risk of starting a bun fight, you say that the PS3 is "an awful console". I would be interested to know what is so awful about it. Care to expand on your comment?
