Just buy a PS3!
#2
I would say the same thing to be honest, a PS3 is probably the better investment as this doesn't even have built in 5.1 or anything.

This whole buy a PS3 lark is getting on my nerves. I have no interest in playing games or any of the other ‘features’ that a PS3 might offer so why would I buy one?
My experience of using games consoles for video playback is that they can’t compete with a stand alone player; they tend to be noisy, have poor remote controls etc.
If someone can show me that a PS3 is silent, has a good remote control and is a good ergonomic fit with my other lounge AV equipment then I’d be very grateful. Otherwise STFU. Rant over. :x

There was no need for that at the end! the ps3 is very very quiet and one of the best BR players out there at the min and for £299 or below a bargain compared to this!

You just cant please everyone... If it wasn't for the ps3 blue ray would suck and been lost to hd-dvd.

Whilst it's true that DVD playback on the PS2 was beyond cack, the PS3 is a damn good blu-ray player.
#9
Yeh, who give's a damn about a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, I mean you really can't beat the look of a games console that you don't even want stuck underneath your Tv and mixed in with your AV Receiver etc. I mean, why buy an Aston Martin when a Volkswagen Golf will do...after all they are both fast cars. What a load of sh*te. This is not about games consoles, it's about how good a deal the Samsung is compared to similar products and their value. And don't give me that "I'm just saying how good the PS3 is as a Blu-Ray player" **** either as it won't wash, so go and get a life PS3 fans. Next thing you'll be plugging a PS3 into your fridge you sad gits.
#10
That is about the biggesy crock of ***** I have ever heard. An aston martin being compared with a golf. You wouldn't happen to be a VW Golf owner would you? Because, no they are not the same!

if and when blue ray takes off this will be worth like £50

remember how dvd player prices droped the same will happen to these
#12
Yeah, it's still for early-adopters and videophiles right now. At least console gamers can get in on the act with built-in solutions.

Watch out for Christmas comming right up.

You are correct of course but the price of players is also currently high due to the amount of processing power needed to handle HD codecs and possibly also the DRM and interactive features. Some HD players are fully fledged mini PCs with Intel CPUs etc according to reviews I’ve read; I don’t remember if that was HD-DVD or Blu-ray! With even entry level PC graphics cards starting to support HD video decoding it’s only a matter of time before the hardware costs head south. That will leave just the disc prices to complain about. ;-)

some hate being thrown around in here, dont know why?

i have the ps3, it is primarily used as a blu ray player and media player, there are no good games out for it unfortunately.

the machine is quiet and looks good compaired to my xbox hd dvd player which was so loud i had to get rid of it.

richer sounds posted out a deal on the

LG BH100 (Super Multi Blu player - Plays Blu-ray and HD-DVD)for £499 ( online it says £599 ) but sign up to the vip thing and it is £100 cheaper.

the samsung looks nice but it is how it performs that counts, it is also out of stock now, so i guess someone had taken up the deal.

i think as someone else said earlier, at the moment blu ray IS playstation 3 because without the console, there would be no blu ray, this was proved with the hd v blu ray sales before the uk launch of ps3.

for me, i dont care what anyone else has got, i get a great picture from sd dvd and an even better image on blu ray, both from my ps3 and hopefully at some time in the future, i will be able to use it to play games on.

I apologise for the bit at the end, I got carried away.
It’s good to hear that the PS3 is quiet as the original PS2 was noisy and the Xbox 360 with HD-DVD is just ridiculously loud.
I wonder if a significant number of people are buying a PS3 purely to play Blu-ray discs.

the ps3 isn't silent though, I can hear it over my projector that sits just above my head, and its a good few metres away.

definitely quieter than the 360 though, I much prefer the 360 but I just couldnt get my self to buy one whilst they all contain aircraft engines

i think a good deal of people are, however as high def dvds are still more for the home cinema enthuiasts, i doubt many people would admit to buying a console for the blu ray.

it was 50 / 50 for me, my hd dvd player was that noisey i was not enjoying the films as it sounded like the wife had her hair drier on next to the tv.

the ps3 console is whisper quiet and compaired to the xbox ( i still have an elite) it is 100% quiet.

i do like the look of the sammy but i have too many toys for the tv anyway, i couldnt get away with anything else as apparently the money could ' be spent on the house or our child' according to the wife.

as for the remote, i have an all in one remote control, cheaper if it breaks than a replacement of the originals and saves me buying a sony ps3 remote.

Big question from me though is 'Can the PS3 be region hacked?'

The man in the hifi shop told me that none of the stand alone players (from Sony) can be so this would be a major advantage to me.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

a good point, datal normally region hack sony products although it always requires a disk change ( obviously it may not now the ps3 has a hard drive).

going back to the original deal, www.richersounds.co.uk promise to beat any web price for the same product so if you still want this player, check out their website.

You have more of a chance of the ps3 being region hacked than a standalone since companies including Datel will be working on the ps3 security.

Seems a bad deal to me compared to the PS3. The remote control for the PS3 is pretty good, used one this week, and being bluetooth you don't even have to point it at the console! Found a nice photo of it here:
