Just saw this and thought it was worth a post as I couldn't find it anywhere on here.

Basically a Samsung BD-P1580 Blu Ray Player for £79.95, or for a tenner more you can get a 5 year guarantee.

In-store only, so call ahead to confirm stock. They are getting deliveries fairly regularly, so if not in stock when you call, get one reserved for when their next delivery comes in (at least twice a week, so I've been led to believe from my reservation experience).

Plays DivX discs, it has a USB port but I'm unsure whether this is DivX compatible also (hopefully someone can clarify?). Ethernet connection too, so easily update-able.

Hope this helps someone out.

If you mean mkv support, then no, it can't :)

like any hot deal on here it's sought after so can often go fast limited qty's or otherwise.
I can vouch safe having worked with RS warehouse staff that they get it out to the stores asap, it used to be that people like myself would be endeavoring to cadge stock (having rung round & checked, ..never believe whats showing as stock on the computer) ..we'd often run stock via taxi in london or courier network in order to help our customers out! (& kill our margins)

good staff & goodwill between staff! .

I got one of these from Novatech a few weeks ago for £69.99. It worked for about 24 hours and then refused to play any blu rays, only DVDs! I was going to get it fixed by Samsung but eneded up just sending it back. Just google 'samsung blu-ray problems' or something similar and you'll start to see a pattern... That's not to say they're all faulty, but it seems there's an awful lot of people who've had problems with this and similar models. I think the 1580 is a UK specific version of a more widely produced mode (1600?) The firmware is not interchangeable though.

I gave up on Samsung, went to Richer Sounds and picked up a Panasonic BD-35 for £99 which has worked perfectly since. I also got a pair of Q Acoustic 1010i speakers which they were advertising for £39.99 on their website. So they do have the deals they advertise! I was just as sceptical as everyone else until I actually tried my luck and walked out with both deals I'd gone in for! Plus at £10 for a 5 year warranty, it would be stupid not to. You even get the £10 back if you don't claim. I imagine they're counting on most people forgertting to claim in 5 years time though!

They had some in a week or so ago, I saw them. I honestly think you've just got to be quick/lucky. I used to think that their best deals were on items virtually out of stock but I've picked up two such bargains from the Leeds store recently.

How does this compare to the sony s360?

+1 a lot of richer sounds so called deals are no where to be seen when you call up for them

Plenty of these left in London Bridge store, where I got one on Friday. Firmware update took a while, but once that was done, it reads any DVDs/BRs you throw at it! I also copied some DivX movies to a USB flash drive, and it played all the files OK. A steal for this price!

Freezing.

Richer Sounds have no respect for Internet buyers (they **** them off on their site (although I note they have a website)) and unless you have days to waste going around all their shops you'll most likely be out of luck.

Plus it's not that great a Bluray player (not mulitregion Bluray or DVD) and will struggle with most other video types.

If you want a basic no frills machine go to ASDA.

If you want (in old-fashioned terms ie you'll actually get one) a Bluray player that plays all Blurays and DVDs from all over the world get http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168916

Since when is s-l-a-g a bad word? Especially in the use here.

I resent that, things might have changed & when I left there was change, however some of the same guys are ther almost 10 yrs on, still busting a gut! ..we used to have ALOT of stressed out nights at the pub to get us gee'd up for a busy week.
lots of trade ended up going via the net, without talking to a colleague, so it becomes hard to guage actual requirements & returns, always speak to the staff prior to buying ..unless you are a hi-fi version of shiva!
It's not all about swap sell, it's about service especially in a shop, they don't want to sell you gear on saturday in-store only to see you at the door on monday morning, used to get lots of "insistent" customers who could be quite rude when we asked as to basic requirements & options.

they're a hard crowd to please in hi-fi & a.v. ..& ad-rags like what-hi-fi often did no favours!

small stores = smaller stockrooms.
did you ask a colleague to ring you if / when new stock came in? & stick a temporary reserve on the item.
there's often people queueing up prior to opening time (esp on press-ad days) to snaffle the stock on a deal, "january sales all year round" it often felt like.

Hi all,

I saw the comments on this thread and wanted to take this opportunity to clarify our position.

The vast majority of our stores do have stock of the Samsung BDP1580 at £79.95. The small size of some of our stores can mean we may temporarily sell out; however I’m pleased to confirm we have in excess of 1000 units in our central warehouse which are immediately available for our stores to order.

Of course, if any customer is having problems obtaining one of these players then do not hesitate to let me know and I will arrange to get you one asap.

Many thanks,

John Clayton

Tha's all very nice but why do you have such contempt and disrespect by having images like this on your site:

So we're all chopped liver? And what do you mean by "retail"? The Internet is retail and retail is the Internet. You liked the Internet enough to buy the bankrupt Empire Direct.

You also -last time I looked- slagged off the Internet in general for shoppers -yet you know the Internet is very important because you go to the bother of posting a free advert (or reply if you prefer) here.

I don't get these annoying comments on your site and it's doing you no favours with me.

If you're selling stuff then put it on your site so we can buy it or close your site to sales. At the moment your site is like a blog not a business.

Can't please ALL the people ALL of the time.

Fujioka, I used to Know John Clayton, As did all the colleagues, & suggest you pick up a phone & call him, having said he's using the place as free advertising (what like people showing football clubs as avatars)
I would not get sucked into a longwinded discussion on here if I were him, the contact no for RS head office is easily available on their site.

Call RS, speak to people who every day bend over backwards to help wherever possible, they are not corporate ogres, rather a bunch of good lads & lasses all pulling together.
give em a break.

I never mentioned RIcher staff and my post is in know way an attack against RS staff (including John Clayton). Read what I said. I have only had great experiences with RS instore but that was a different decade. We've all moved on.

It's not 1987 and it's not cool to on one hand dis the Internet and people who shop on it and on the other buy up a blender and kettle supplier (Empire Direct).

RS needs to take a look at their business plan, that's all I'm saying.

But they don't really. Look how succesful they are :)
Perhaps you should move on too :)

Just so people are aware.. I rang up today to check stock. They had had a few in today, yet they were reserved. I was informed they would have a delivery on Friday. They have reserved me one and will phone me when it's there. I don't really call that bad service!! You would wait that length of time for it to come in the post so why can't people be patient regarding the collection of an item?

I have moved on, not bought a single thing from Richer Sounds for around 8 years. Stopped looking maybe 5-6 years ago as I gave up trying to buy "bargains" from them.

I now buy my stuff via the Internet and since RS aren't really on the Internet... well there you go.

I don't mind RS not wanting my money I just don't like them continually slagging of the Internet on one hand and then buying an Internet shop on the other. Hypocrisy is the word I think.

Good luck to them.

This player is complete junk, ours has died already, can't read disks anymore, needless to say we won't be buying from samsung ever again! The RS display model had the same problem aswell.

No problems with mine (yet!)

Not very impressed with richer sound deals simply because there isnt a shop near me and they sell absolutely nothing and have a strange "exclusive in store only". The whole website is a waste of time. Im not sure why they dont sell online really, its pretty rare and just means they lose out utlimately in the end Id have thought.

Not a new thread, I know, just discovered it while trying to find out why I am having problems with my BDP1580; clearly samsung is not admitting something.
I have a BDP1580[from Tesco,£99] connected to a P2470HD Syncmasterfrom RS. The Player is less than a year old, rarely used, and only with bona fide media.
Previously it was connected to a phillips 42inch with 1080i res, initially direct HDMI connection and later via Sony AV reciever. Never had a problem, apart from the noisy start and relatively slow loading time.
Recently purchased the Syncmaster for another room and decided to team it up with the BDP1580. Had nothing but grief since. All the symptoms - distorted or frozen video/audio output, device locking up and freezing on 'load', reported in this forum and others are not resolved by reset, network update or changing HDMI leads. Changing to component connection cable makes no difference.
The fact that this seems to have occurred on a fairly wide scale suggests that either Samsung firmware or hardware is at fault, since that is the common denominator.
I suspect they will not admit to an inherent defect as it would mean an expensive product recall..
