I've had one of these for 18 months now and it's brilliant. As quick as the day we got it, starts up in less than 10 seconds. All you need is a WiFi connection. We use it a lot for the kids to do homework on or for us to use if they want the main PC - it supports multi-users through your Google account.

Refurb comes with 12 month warranty.

No because Samsung are much much better than Acer in terms of build quality and reliability.

The Exynos 5250 ARM chip on the Samsung is no match for any old Core2Duo Intel chip, never mind the 2955U found on the Acer model!

Was having a go of this at best buy in Port Charlotte, Florida. It was a nice and easy to use PC. Will be the good for wife to use to browse and use for basic internet stuff. Glad I didn't buy it now. Although it might have been £20 cheaper here, you just have the reassurance of the Tesco guarantee and no converter plug. I can't believe this hasnt gone hotter

exactly Acer C720 much better buy than Samsung - chipset is so much faster

Acer also has USB 3.0

but Samsung quality does feel a little better and more MBAish ;)

There is a seller on Amzon who has these for £222

If you can wait keep an eye out for the 13" models I got one from Agros (ebay) for £139 when a deal appeared on HUKD.

It was my first Chromebook - did not expect much. Blown away. Just purchased a Dual core SSD Chromebook but that was 11.6" and the screen is matt more like a laptop (less glare) the HP has a glossy screen fine for media colours really rich and vivid.

Both can be used for offline document editing, etc worth a look.

So I assume as it has a hard drive, Im able to save Excel / small files to it without need for internet connection?
#14

The intel based Acer is a much better purchase. In terms of general use perhaps the difference might be negligible but the intel chip will make a huge difference if you wanna do more with the chromebook like install crouton and run actual programs. Also, I am not sure what the previous comments about build quality are all about, the samsung chromebook has OK build quality but it isn't great. I owned the samsung chromebook.

I believe that they allow "offline" use for things like Google Docs

The previous comments about build quality refer to the fact Acer don't have the best reputation for build quality, I've owned a couple and had problems but have just bought another Acer netbook/laptop so it doesn't put me off buying the brand.

The Samsung has one USB 3.0 too. The reason I rate the Samsung over the Acer, the Sammy is fanless. I hate fans!

Actually it depends, The Samsung is a little nicer asthetically IMO but the Acer is faster, has a slightly better screen and has better battery life, it also uses an x86 CPU rather than an ARM CPU so it is easier to install Linux and use as a real PC. The Samsung has marginally better build quality but both are very plasticy.

hmm I've only had one Acer laptop but it wasn't a budget laptop and the build quality was excellent. What I mean is, regardless of general brand reputation, in terms of this specific item, there is nothing particularly great about the samsung build quality on the chromebook, in fact I would suggest it's quite poor, it picks up scratches/scuffs so easily and the trackpad is very poor. I haven't even used the Acer, it may be of a similar standard but I highly doubt it is worse.

Do the refurbished models come with the 2 year 100GB Free Storage offered with new models? Surely not if its been redeemed for the device.

Can you run these connected to the charger to avoid battery depletion?

I've got the Acer C720 chromebook and love it. Awesome devices for blogging, watching videos and someone has even written a torrent client all in JavaScript so will run on a chromebook.

Full recommended!

Not sure if these are eligible for 100GB Google Drive offer?
#24
I bought one of these a few months ago. I'm using it now. I love it. So easy to use, lightweight prefer it to my ipad and great having a keyboard. Perfect if all you need it is for basic wordprocessing and internet. I got a tesco refurb and got the google drive offer but I guess it depends if the original owner redeemed it.

Hi, what's the keyboard and track pad like? This review put me off as it's pretty fundamental to the experience while browsing on the sofa.

Yes

I love my Chromebook, but there are a few things it just can't do. Some are quite surprising. No Silverlight, which means no Amazon streaming service. No Skype, even the browser version, simply because you can't install ANYTHING on it, so no plugins. This also goes for Unity (gaming plugin), some games will have a Chrome app version, but many will not. There are quite a few other issues including accessing files on a network and general awkwardness of 'cloud based computing'. Chromebooks are great for general web browsing and simple tasks like using Google docs, just do your research before you buy one in case you want to use it for something its just not suitable for.

Wut? I own a MBA and a Samsung Chromebook, the comparison is impossible. The Samsung is a piece of ****. I've babied it and it's only ever been left on my coffee table and keys are falling off.

I looked at this I think it comes with an older CPU and you need to install a custom BIOS to allow you to install other OSs

If you are thinking of installing Windows note that the Track Pad and Keyboard are not supported external ones will be fine but not an option for mobile use!. Linux does support the keyboard and pad but needs some tweaks. To install the custom BIOS you need to short a jumper on the unit (its inside) so not for the non tech folk.

The HD model is not a simple wipe the HD and install another OS!

I got the 16gb SSD model (not upgradable) as it has the newer lower power CPU and no spinning disk = Better battery life.

Good price.
Do think the HP Chromebook 11 is better - better keyboard, and ultimately the HP can be charged via a normal/Android microUSB charger.

Great advice except nothing mentioned, hence why I asked. Reburbed means exactly that. Some batches maybe in great condition others not so with large scratches etc.

Why on earth would anyone buy this and then want to put Windows on it? Insane!

The HP has the best screen of the Chromebooks (bar the Pixel), but in most other respects it is poor. The Acer C720 is the best Chromebook, apart from the Pixel, and is way better that the posted Samsung, it is also available at a lower price.

The C720 is well built, has a good keyboard and trackpad, together with excellent performance and battery life. The Toshiba 13" is probably the only other one to consider, if you really need the larger screen. However that makes no sense to me ass 11.6" seems fine for 1366 resolution.

Only if you run Linux. Chromebooks use the Google Cloud printing service. Some networked printers offer this directly, otherwise you need a pc connected printer, and for the pc to be on.
