This seems an excellent price for a decent camera.
The cheapest I could see it elsewhere is around the £70 mark.

This was down to £49.99, but is now apparently scanning at £29.99 in Superdrug.

Yes..it was in the Metro paper this morning that I saw the advert.

Slightly off topic...but I told my uncle to get one of these for himself, as his camera has finally broken after about 30yrs!!! Does anyone know where to get the cheapest decent 1GB SD Card so I can get one for him?
#4
SD card prices are falling...

2GB one costs £8.22 @ Amazon

Cheers Edi...the specs say it is only guaranteed to work up to 1GB....but there are a few places selling the camera with 2GB cards installed, so I might try a 2GB card instead.

My local Superdrug had the camera today but it came up at till at £89.99. I naturally queried this and supervisor found memo detailing offer applicable from yesterday. She thought the offer price was £44.99 (not £49.99) and I of course accepted that, pointing out that I understood the deal to be a 50% discount. 50% of £89.99 = £44.99!

I bought the camera for wife's birthday so can't try it yet. I see the warning about 1GB memory limit but my understanding is that 2GB SD should be fine - possibly nothing bigger than 1GB was readily available when camera was brought out. The Amazon card previously mentioned seems ideal.

The short life of the AA batteries is a criticism seen elsewhere but readily overcome by using NiMH rechargeables. Best deal I have seen for a very suitable charger/batteries is £9.49 + £4.50 P&P on http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000GE573A/ref=ord_cart_shr/203-1698962-0310307 Most suppliers charge £15 - £25 (exc postage) for the same Uniross product. I'm ordering one today.

Happy snapping!

Nice one Puffer! I'll leave it at the advertised price though, just in case you are the only one to get lucky with the lower price of £44.99!

Please note NiMH batteries are 1.2v unlike the 1.5 of conventional AA alkaline batteries. Therefore, they are effectively 20% discharged. Better to get the expensive Lithium AA batteries

If you have a costco account then grab the voucher booklet on your way in and save 20% off all memory including Sandisk SD Ultra II 2GB that I think are around 18 quid before the discount.

The beauty of costco is a no quibble cash refund should you not be happy or the card not work in your camera.

Please note NiMH batteries are 1.2v unlike the 1.5 of conventional AA alkaline batteries. Therefore, they are effectively 20% discharged. Better to get the expensive Lithium AA batteries

Most equipment (such as cameras) does not need a full 1.5V to operate properly and is in fact designed to respond to a lower voltage of around 1.1 - 1.3 because a full 1.5V is not always consistently available.

Yes, the NiMH voltage is 1.2 but in practice stays more or less constant until the battery is nearly flat. NiMH battery manufacturers state them to be ideal for items such as cameras. The effective voltage from an alkaline battery, although nominally 1.5V initially, does progressively reduce with use and is unlikely to be much more than 1 - 1.1V towards the end of its life. NiCad rechargeables also start at 1.2V but this similarly reduces with use and they need discharging before recharging because they have a 'memory'.

So, imho, alkalines will do the job (but not economically); NiCads are quite cheap but need regular discharging/recharging; NiMH are not too expensive and are straightforward and reliable. Whether lithium batteries are worth the extra is a matter of choice.

As an aside, the 'flat' alkaline battery that would normally be thrown away can go on earning its keep in devices such as clocks which neither draw much current nor are very voltage sensitive.

My uncle went into Superdrug today. The camera was £49.99 but he bought something else as well, and apparently if you spend over £50, then you get another 20% off (special 3 day offer)....also, as he is an old fart, he has some senior citizens card that gets another 10% off...the camera cost him about £36 in the end! Bargain.

Managed to get a Veho 133x 1GB SD Card from Scan Computers for £7.03 delivered (I'm on their free delivery list). Bargain.

Saw the camera..... Looked great value for money.... However - They wouldnt sell me it for that price.... It was coming up at £89.99..... Doh....
#14
Go back and ask for it again at that price...it was advertised in last Monday's Metro newspaper, and the offer was not to end until 20th March. Tell them to phone their Head Office to confirm.

Rung head office yesterday..... Said the offer was still on - However it expires today (06/03/07) - and if had any problems when purchasing - get the store to give them a ring..... When to Leeds store and had no problems purchasing.... £49.99. Great little camera for price... Top find....

I think its disgusting that they dont advertise the price in store though.... and it still scanned up at £89.99 when I purchased it.... Any unsuspecting customer will have probably had to pay full price.....

Anyway - Top find.... Heat and rep left..... Thanks
