Thanks for posting the deal :) The Google Checkout offers a good saving and I don't see a problem posting seperately, as not everyone looks in the forum, so can see this from the front page on its own merits ;-)

It's predecessor (the HD860) was well reviewed, so this should be another quality player from Samsung. I believe it ships with a HDMI cable in the box overseas but I doubt we'll get that here in the UK. It ships as Region 2 only but you can hack it and make it multi-region by doing the following ...

* turn on dvd player
* make sure there's no dvd in closed tray
* press 'repeat' button
* 'no disc' disappears in left corner
* press 57538
* current region code is visible in left corner
* press 9 for code free
* press 'Standby'
* enjoy!

Hi,

What is google checkout and is it worth using it?

Paul.

Google chackout is an alternative way of paying for your items load up your card details and pay simple as that.
and at the moment they are offering a £10 discount in some stores for a purchase over £30 thats it in a nutshell i think.

atlast Proper competition for SCAMPAL i mean PAYPAL

Thanks for that - i have just used it to buy the DVD Player to go with my new Samsung 40" TV I ordered yesterday!
#7
Not a bad price for a reasonable deck, the one remote has its values. Don't buy it just because it upscales though as any HD tv will do just as good a job, if not better.

So are you saying that a HD TV will upscale normal DVDs using a non-upscaling dvd player better than this DVD upscaler using a HD TV?
#9
I think an upscaling DVD player would be better than letting the TV do the upscaling. Besides, even with the DVD player, some TVs still do some upscaling anyway. If the TV res is 1366x768, then the DVD player will upscale to 720p = 1280x720, and then the TV will upscale the rest of the way to 1366x768. I think. Don't quote me on that lol.

they seem to have sold out of the cheaper 1.2 metre cables though which were 7.99

It always happened to me.... I ordered this DVD player last week, and this deal it's 15 pounds cheaper than what I paid. I can still return mine to Amazon, and probably get about 7 or 8 pounds back after the postage. But I'm probable too lazy to do that.

Anyway, good DVD player if connect with a HDMI cable.

Many thanks, ndurve, very useful information. Since I really don't want to return it just because I found a cheaper price somewhere else. Of course, if I bought it in-store, that would be dufferent though. Anyway, thanks again.

Couple of places to look out for HDMI cables:

Sainsburys - short version, but cheap as chips.
LIDL/ALDI

Search these forums, there are a couple of informative posts floating around.

Yes! If you want a DVD player to do the upscaling better than a tv can probably do we are talking of a DVD player in a different league to this one.

I have the HD860 and that has made a dramatic difference compared to the picture i was getting on my old dvd player, thus proving your theory to be complete cobblers.

Well i thought it was a good deal, so ordered one and voted hot.

Cheers OP!

Hi all,

My dvd player arrived today, very nice and it looks great too!

Great service from Empire.

Just got to wait until Saturday for the Samsung LCD to connect it to.

Not at all, Bogart is quite correct. It all depends how good your panels processing is. A cheap LCD say, will suffer much more and show more artifacts etc on poor sources.

My Fujitsu plasma has excellent video processing from SD sources, and most certainly better than the scaler in for example a £30 no-brand divx player.

Did your DVD player beforehand have HDMI or a scart connection? As this would explain the picture quality difference rather than the upscaling if you have a relatively decent panel.

I must say I was always dubious on the merits of an upscaling DVD as most DVD's dont provide a 720 quality source and so it's just stretching the picture more than upscaling it.

However I have a cheap upscaling HDMI DVD which I temporarily used on a non HDMI rear projection DVD and the picture has improved massively. Just don't ask me to explain why :)

hello.

hopefully someone can help :thumbsup:

i am considering purchasing said DVD player and the Samsung-LE19R71BX TV.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/B000IAZMV4/ref=s9_asin_image_1/203-2842797-7870324?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=018WB4CCVAW8W90T4EEF&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=125824391&pf_rd_i=468294

what i am confused about is the DVI on the TV. the spec lists it as "DVI + Audio", does it or does it not receive sound? :oops:

i am thinking HDMI - DVI lead, will this just transfer picture? if so how do i get sound from DVD to TV? i want to be able to send sound to my HIFI aswell as the TV.

i understand the 19" is NOT HD ready which means no sound via DVI?

are HD ready TV's that have DVI able to receive sound like the Acoustic at Argos(£179.99)

i realise HDMI to HDMI sends sound and picture, but am not sure about DVI.

any help appreciated.

thank you.

pfpf.

May seem a strange question but for those who have bought one/seen one - is the front panel flat ?

Some of the photos I have seen make it look as if the front panel slopes back from the bottom to the top (or simply a trick of the shading in the photos?)

thanks

DVI = Picture only, even when using a HDMI to DVI adapter.
TV’s with DVI or D-SUB for that matter will accept a pair of phono plugs (or other plug type) to transfer the audio from a PC or other device. A TV with both a DVI & D-SUB input should have separate audio inputs for both interfaces.

The problem you may well have is that your DVD player will very likely only have one set of analogue audio outputs which you want to connect to both your TV and your amplifier. If your amplifier accepts a digital audio signal and your DVD player has a digital audio output then use that. Otherwise, you’ll need a device that allows you to split a stereo audio signal into two individual stereo outputs.

great, thank you.

rep added.

edit: something i just thought about....

will a HDMI to DVI cable give the best possible picture? as the TV is not HD will having an upscaling DVD player give a better picture than say an ordinary DVD player connected via scart?

i am talking DVDHD870(HDMI+upscaling) - LE19R71BX(DVI, not HD)

thank you.

This has gone up in price to effective price of £55 now right ?
