Bargain deal hot for me

Good price for these drives. I had one delivered from Amazon before Christmas (£61 odd) - it came in a plastic caddy rattling around inside a large cardboard box - hopefully you folks will have better packing :)
#3
Mine came just after Christmas, came in a small wrap-around cardboard box not much bigger than the drive. Nothing wrong with the packaging, although i've still yet to try the drive as it was brought to go on a XBOX 360 and haven't got round to getting a Sata cable for it.

Glad they fixed the packaging - I know several folks had problems at the same time I bought mine...

Tempted, but there are a lot of recent reviews complaining about the packaging again.

I've never had to try Scan after sales service, but they do pack their drives very well (loads of bubble wrap).

Seems to be alot of horror stories of Scan's after sales service, i'd probably pay Amazon the few quid extra just to have peace of mind, especially when it comes to harddrives. There is the packaging possibly not being great, but then if anything is damaged, Amazon CS is excellent, they'd send a replacement out straight away.
#7
I read they need a firmware update to solve a major bug?
#8
I ordered sometime after some people said they got theirs in better packaging, mine was just in cardboard though and could have been knocked around a bit. Hopefully by now sorted for all...

Think either the guy hasnt yet realiesed the xbox 360 only takes laptops hard drives or he's somehow routing the cables out his 360 to the hard drive outside?

There's a 2TB Samsung "Spinpoint" drive at Ebuyer for a few pennies less: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/237908

Does anyone know the difference between Spinpoint and EcoGreen?

I've been impressed by Ebuyer's customer service, and I don't recall any packaging problems.

EDIT: Hehe - Faythur saw it too! :p

ebuyer says same model number as this ^... i think the full title is spinpoint ecogreen F4 etc

The new disk manages to squeeze 2TB onto only three platters, leading the manufacturer to claim that it has the highest areal density of any desktop drive in the world.

Of course, a massive 667GB per platter isn't all that this drive brings to the table. Fewer platters means lower power-usage, and Samsung is claiming a 23 per cent drop in consumption compared to its previous four-platter EcoGreen models. The drive even manages to do this while boosting standby time performance by 19 percent.

The new hard-disk is more than just power-conscious, though. The F4EG is made with environmentally-friendly materials and doesn't rely on any halogens in the manufacture of the PCB.

Pay the £4.79 extra and get a WD 2TB drive, far better drive imho.

''Nothing wrong with the packaging''
Then with all due respect you know nothing about how 3.5" drives work and how susceptible to shock damage they are!!

Or like me he has JTAG'ed his Xbox and hard soldered a SATA lead onto his 360's mobo :-) Difference is I've used a 1TB WD Caviar Black and not a rubbish sammy drive ;-)

Just found this:

"As long as the manufactured date is after 11-2010 then the unit has already been applied the patch."

..in an email from Samsung..

EDIT

Also see that they've now matched the Ebuyer price [I had emailed them :) ]

But there's no way of knowing beforehand whether the unit you'll receive was made before or after that date. So this would be a very unwise purchase for Mac owners, who would be unable to apply the PC only patch.

Amazing! Now if we can get Ebuyer to beat that price...

Horses for courses i suppose, people have worse experiences with certain brands than others (for me, ive had plenty of WD drives fail over the years, i havent used them for a while now).

I've seen some speed tests of both the Samsung and the WD and at least for those people who tested them, the Samsung has better transfer rates, but the WD has better access times.

If you sent the drive back for a RMA in that packaging, they would refuse it. That packaging is asking for trouble.

Other than amazons awful packing, I have 8 of these drives in my server, running off a very cheap but fast, HP P400. So quiet and Ive never had an issue with any samsung drive compared to the two WDs and countless Maxtors.

The packaging really isn't as bad as it looks. The drive's in the plastic clamshell case which is formed with the balls in it to protect the drive. As the cardboard sleeve is a tight fit, there's a good clearance between the drive and the cardboard insulating the drive from damage. Provided someone doesn't drop the drive, there shouldn't be an issue. Sure, Scan's 'wrap in a load of bubblewap and stick it in bag' is better. But if it works, does it matter? atleast you know you'll be getting adrive with the fully Samsung warrenty. It certainly wouldn't stop me from buying another drive to replace the F2EG, as these drives are a lot faster.

It's simple enough. There's a Sata adapter inside the HDD caddy, for an easy life you can just plug a female Sata to male Sata lead into it and then just take the 12V from somewhere or use eSata enclosure/ external power supply instead..

I ordered my Amazon drive on the 27th of December, and it was picked on the 28th. Manufacture date of the drive was 2010.12. Given that 2 months have passed since then, i'd say it's highly likely you'll get a drive manuactured after 2010.11.

My Scan drive was delivered mid December and was Manufactured in September, although that's a 'Z4'.

Yes it is. I ordered one from Amazon, and it came in exactly the same packaging that your photos show.

I returned it without even testing it, and I was right to do so.

If you think that packaging is adequate you are sorely mistaken. The drop from letterbox to doormat alone is liable to damage it, but think about the amount of times it would have been dropped/thrown during transit.

As for you suggestion that because it works when you tried it now, there is no damage done, again this is wrong. Such damage will not necessarily show up immediately, but will likely reduce the lifespan & reliabiity of the drive.

I usually think Amazon are awesome, but on this one they really dropped the ball. It's just not acceptable to ship HDDs in this way.
#30
good price. very tempted heat added, but I will wait until they go for under £50.
#31
I ordered this off Amazon last time.

They shipped me a DVD drive instead. Lovely.
#32
so..basically..wheres the best place to get it? considering the packaging and services?

Ebuyer? (£59.51 + free delivery)
Amazon? (£59.51 + free delivery)
SCAN? (£113.99 + free delivery) for 2 drives ..

was thinking to get 2 from scan...but since u said service was bad..i had to redecide. =/

also..any chances that these prices will go lower?

if so..then il prob get 1HDD for now.

I'm going to use Ebuyer this time. They handled a return well for me once, even though it was months after purchase. They even organised and paid for the courier return. Amazon customer services can be good, too, but the risk with this item is even if they pack it well, it may be one of the units that another customer has returned because of bad packaging.

Calm down, your acting like you've just been sodomised. First you make the typo, secondly you fail to see the humorous side of why i asked you what its got to do with you when you said "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII WONT FIT" instead of "it" and now you're resorting to personal insults. You should meditate :-)

Can anyone advise how I can carry out the firmware update without a sata computer. All I have is a ide/sata converter. I have downloaded freeDos and have a disk with both the update and FD on.

When I try the update I get an error, I guess that because I am using an adapter. Are there any bios settings I need to change other than boot from cd drive.

When done I plan to put them in the d-link dns320.
