Some deals are slow burners. All the young trendies have been watching Panorama about the Football World Cup bribes scandal, this will lift off very shortly!

Personally would rather pay £299 for the phone up front and take one of the £10/month Tesco/T-mobile deals floating about which would work out at £480 over the same period. But each to their own of course £299 is a lot up front!
#6
had his phone since launch really happy with it, no regrets.

got this on 24 months last week with 300 mins unlimited texts and 500 mb data wish i had waited another week brill phone but if you get one and want to update the 2.1 to 2.2 version and your useing windows 7 samsungs kies has a problem so use a system with xp loaded to get the update
#8
are clearence new phones or reconditioned?

#9
Updated mine via windows 7 with no problems.

That's exactly what I've done.

This phone is amazing though, one problem it has is the filesystem that Samsung use...RFS is awful and makes the phone a lot slower than what it should be. I'd recommend flashing the Kernel to ext2 after you buy it and update it to 2.2 to get the best out of it. XDA website will have everything you need ;)

It's a brilliant phone but my mate owns one and he's such an **** about it. Word of advice, it's just a phone at the end of the day.

Hot deal, but I would never buy Samsung again. Their support is pants.
#15
Why would anybody buy this when you can get the HTC Desire for the same monthly contract but with more mins/txt/internet. The HTC Desire also won mobile of the year, beating the iphone4!

Mine is 600 mins, 500 text and unlimited data with a 16GB Galaxy S on Vodafone for £20pm. You cant get that now (and I'd suspect the deal you mention is obsolete also), so not really relevant.

Watch yer back. As of October Vodafone redefined the meaning of "unlimited data". Go over your unlimited limit on the actually limited unlimited data bundle now, and they'll charge you £5 / 500MB

It's way much better than the desire. Got a better hardware, bigger, brighter screen, better camera, better audio chip. Although indeed the filesystem sucks, which can be solved with either Doc's rom from XDA, or converting filesystem via Ext2 or 4. Both are just a few click, and done. Even my baby could do it!

If you are a heavy GPS user then beware, the SGS is notoriously unreliable.....its the one thing I don't like about having one.
#21
a lot of people keep talking about this GPS problem?

I have android 2.2 and mine nearly as accurate as my Garmin Colorado (yes, I'm a geocacher).
It can take a while to get a fix sometimes but it's a phone?

Certainly more reliable than my Blackberry Curve!

Some people are lucky, a lot of us have what is blatantly a hardware problem that Samsung refuse to recognise.

I have to use my old Motorola DEXT or T-Mobile G1 for Sat Nav use, my SGS is useless at GPS.

I've got a Samsung Galaxy, and I've seen and played about with an iPhone and I can't see why people just blindly follow iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy is such an awesome phone, the swype keyboard is AWESOME!! The features are so intuitive, the display is awesome, would deffo recommend!
#24
just be sure to reflash the phone with generic firmware; a colleague bought his through orange and it really sucked - performance was terrible until he updated it.

How does this phone compare to the HTC Desire HD?

How does this phone compare to the HTC Desire HD?

The Desire HD murders it

Galaxy S file system (RFS) as mentioned above means it runs quite slow for it's Specs and can often suffer 'lag' where as HTC phones use a more suitable file system.

Both have 1GHZ Processors and advance GPUs but the Galaxy is advertised as having 512MB RAM (yet mine shows only 341MB available). The Desire HD has 768MB RAM.

Desire HD comes with Teleatlas map data pre-loaded on the phone, so even when signal is low you can still use maps.

There's a whole bunch of other cool things that HTCSense offers over Galaxy S.

Desire HD has 8MP cam with LED flash vs the Galaxy S 5MP no flash.

I think the Galaxy S performs better as a media player but as an allround smartphone the HTC kills it.

Thanks for the reply spruceyb.

I think I will go with the Desire HD then. It's the same £25 a month and the phone is free but that's on a 24mth contract rather than 18mths like this Galaxy S. The Desire HD sounds like it's worth the extra 6mth.

Thanks again.

No problem.
With the Desire HD battery life could be a minor issue, but if you drop down to 2G (GSM) when you're not actively using data heavy apps (full web browsing, YouTube, downloading from Market etc) then it should be fine.

Just picked up this phone with Orange as an upgrade.

£10 pm for 400mins, unltd texts, 1gig of data

And they charged me £99 for the phone - so overall price for comparison is £15.50 a month.

When it came it was also the standard version running froyo completely unlocked - not the crappy Orange customised version which shows on their website.

NO FLASH HERE, NO LED FLASH HERE ;-) misleading!
