I had this phone and installed cyanogenmod on it and it was like a brand new phone again. It ultimately died though, when I dropped it in the bath

I have an S3 but ultimately it has been crippled by lack of support from Samsung.

Cold from me.

How exactly does a lack of 'support', I presume Android updates it what you speak of, "cripple' the s3!?

Im more than happy with how it currently works (jelly bean). I don't think I'd what another update, that will be designed for newer phones, put onto my s3. It would almost certainly slow it down, orcause a world of software problems.

Stop looking at what you 'could' have, and appreciate what you DO have, which is a perfectly good, quick(ish) Phone, that does everything it needs to, and very well.

4.3 killed mine, and the wifes. Slimkat 4.4.4 now, better than new.

Spend £20 more and get a S4 from smartfonestore grade A which is like new, ( I would say practically new as mine was) stock may not be available but it comes regularly and would be more worthwhile investing a small amount for a better upgraded device.

Why do people keep announcing they're voting cold for illogical reasons? No one cares.

If I had £179 to spend I wouldn't dream of using it to buy this. There is definitely more bang for buck out there.

Because when people vote cold without explaining, the comments get full of people whining that people are voting cold without explaining it. Funny, eh?

If you need a phone with a good camera and SD support this is a great choice. Got one last week and very pleased with it.

This happened to me, I was phoning a plumber at the time, to tell him of a pressing issue in my house, I said "Help Help" The plumber said "OK" I interjected with "Help Help the water is up to my ankles already" the plumber slightly concerned said "OK mate where are you?" I said "I'm in the bath hahaahahaaha" at which point the plumber used some language that Mario would have been ashamed of. I then dropped the phone in the bath as I was laughing so much at which point that wiped the smile from my face.

When you vote cold though there isn't a questionnaire asking you why you voted cold, voting is up to the individual and is no one else's business. I vote hot and cold and often don't explain why and I'm not going to change.

Hot, as a great phone, had mine 18 months+ running Cyanogenmod 11 (4.4.4) - runs like a dream, just shows what the phone can do when all of the crud is stripped out of the OS.

Haha - I know - I HAVE a Moto G and the S3 IS better, especially if you like taking photos (so many fanboys of phones don't seem to realise that many people use phones for documenting everyday life). My wife has an S3 which she uses all the time for taking pics of the kids and it's undoubtedly better for pics. It's speedy enough etc and has a larger screen (though battery life seems worse). Moto G *might* be better value, but it ultimately depends what important to you. As for the person who voted cold cos its not an iPhone, I only hope he was joking/trolling for his own sake/sanity/chance of a life!

Problem I have with mine is the battery life (half a day, even on replacement batteries) with stock JB.
Do custom Roms like SlimKat 4.4 or Cyanogen break MHL (HDMI) out?

Good for you - unfortunately most people get annoyed when cold votes aren't explained, hence why I tried to illuminate people on the matter.

Just curious.... what were the things you hated? I considered the S3 partly because of the camera but (and it's a big but) my friend has one which I put some hiking GPS software on and it wouldn't get fix unless it had a data link via his mobile provider. The GPS fix on the Moto G is very fast with or without data. Also the battery life on the S3 seemed worse than the Moto G. Both of these factors are important for a day out hiking. If you are into loading ROMs up then the S3 could be a competitor I guess.

Well think about this if you had a choice would you choose to get annoyed about cold votes? If the answer is no, then don't do it because you do have the choice. Simple as that.

It's an old phone. Unless you are willing and able to put other roms on it I would give it a miss. My S3 is ok but I use it very infrequently as it is a work phone. My wife's s3 is knackered. Every update makes it worse. Too sluggish, stops for 30 secs every so often. If you can get a refurbished s4 for £20 more you would be stupid buying this phone. Saying all that if you are happy not to update the os, and not use apps that need an updated os then this is still a very good phone. The moto g is not really compatible but should be good for working with updates for the next year or 2!

I don't mind cold votes - sure there's pretty annoying and stupid, but so are many people on this site - I was just saying that some people get annoyed by reckless cold voting on here. That's all, not trying to start a debate about it. I realise how futile getting annoyed at such a thing is.

What's the best custom rom for battery life and doesn't break HDMI out (MHL) and includes screen mirroring (Miracast)?

Is that 'out of the box' or does the S3 need to be custom ROMed to be 'better'? I am considering it but I am still to be convinced that the GPS and water resistiveness on the S3 is better

The camera on this is good..

The camera on the moto g is absolutely terrible

slimkat gets my vote every time. If you're reading and you don't know what I'm taking about it's a customised version of the android operating system which is free and open source. the look and feel is more like the version of android you get on Google nexus devices and so it isn't full of bloat.
