Sorry if this is a silly question, but how would you tell the difference between the 3g and 4g version?
Is the model number different?

I had to do a bit of research few weeks ago, but basically, the octa core version is 3G originally made for India where the 4G isn't out or not readily available so they devised this edition. The LTE or 4G version is quad core. I don't think looking at it you can see any difference but when you use the phone there is probably slight difference in timing loading apps and such.

To be honest, if you're going to have 4G access then its not the option, but my mate bought his the other day and you wont really notice the difference phone wise. Where he lives there is no 4G so there wasn't point in paying extra for 4G usage as well as extra for something he cant use

3G version is SM-G900H (octa core 4 fast + 4 energy saver cores)
4G version is SM-G900F (Quad Core)

Performance wise they're identical.
