cold, its a samsung. Only Android devices to have are nexus / pixel

Completely disagree. The Pixel, albeit a good phone, is massively overpriced.
Huawei are making some excellent handsets these days and they sport some very useful features not found in stock/vanilla Android devices.

Take camera apps for example. The default camera app on a Nexus or Pixel is so basic you can hardly do anything with your photos. Huawei and Samsung's camera interfaces allow you to do so much more and fiddle around with loads of different options. My Honor 8 (and other devices) even allow you to keep the shutter open, so you can create some very nice looking light trails etc.

I've had near-stock Android phones such as the Moto G and Smart Ultra 6, and after owning a Huawei phone I'm amazed at how feature rich it is in comparison to a stock Android experience

Hmm, I've voted hot based on the fact that it's a 4G tablet with a SIM slot, and that it comes with 12GB of data to be used over six months,

BUT - if you don't care about having a SIM slot, you can get the higher specced Lenovo Tab 3 8" tablet from Argos with more RAM, double the internal storage and a slightly faster processor for £30 less.

Don't go for ID! It's bad and useless.

Care to elaborate?, the reception and data speeds in my area are excellent, perfect for a tablet data service!

Is this unlocked? It's not in the 'unlocked tablets' section of ebay, and I don't see unlocked mentioned in the details, but I do see unlock codes advertised online for this tablet.

Could the data sim be used be used in another device? (such as a mifi)

And (sorry about all these questions, but trying really hard to justify buying this to OH) can this tablet with the ID sim be used for tethering?

Any input on how this tablet compares to the Amazon Fire 7? Or even the Fire 8 HD (besides the screen size difference).

for me I wouldn't pay £30 for a tablet with 8GB on board storage... after formatting and Android OS/Samsung bloatware enjoy the 1GB you're left with for everything else.

I don't know why, but every time I read "Samsung Galaxy Tab A" my inside voice puts a comma before the "A" and raises pitch at the end, so it sounds like a Canadian saying it.

Cold. Samsung and 8gb, £120 for a brick.

Why would it being Samsung make it cold? Samsung are easily the best Android manufacturers, and were it not for the Note 7 debacle they were wiping the floor with Apple with superior products.

Hold on a sec, because you could say that a number of android OEMs are … Hold on a sec, because you could say that a number of android OEMs are destroying apple right now. In terms of actual profit etc though, none of them come close to apple. So wiping the floor isnt really apt in the broad sense. Samsung have improved a lot, and with the nougat update for s7, I beleive they have the best of both worlds in the android space. Pixel is way too expensive and lacks a lot of features at that price. Where as you can get a new s7 edge for around £400 these days. You're essentially paying high Google tax for a faster OS. The screen isn't the greatest on the pixel either. I actually preferred the accuracy of the oneplus 3 screen with srgb vs the pixel. Samsung's basic mode is just epic.

I meant the quality of Samsung's flagship devices are vastly superior to what Apple offer, and also superior to rival Android brands.

Samsung is the premium Android manufacturer (imo, though I really don't think that's disputable), and this was just the point of my reply. Its phones are consistently the best specc'd, well built, well designed, best features, and most sought after market leading Android devices. They were exceptionally unlucky with the battery issue as that Note 7 was a beast of a phone in every category and would have been the best phone on the market by some margin. HTC, LG, whoever manufactures Google's line of devices, Huawei, etc, their flagships are rarely as good. For phones I think you'd have to go back to the original Google Nexus for a non-Samsung leading flagship Android phone, and even that was manufactured by Samsung. Since then their Galaxy (S or Note) lines have always been the best Android phones around. The other manufacturers really need to up their game.

Yep, I can second the comment above - mine was unlocked - worked fine with my GiffGaff SIM on calls, text and data. The phone is packaged with the original box inside an ID box with the SIM card stuck to the lid. Discard or ignore it, and you have the same packaging as a factory unlocked SIM free phone. You'll see what I mean once you get yours. Let us know how you get on.

To answer my own question, the part number for the official case that includes a cut out for the earpiece is EF-BT285PBEGWW, and it is pretty expensive in the few places that sell it.

Hey man, while booting up does your tab have a little greenish tint … Hey man, while booting up does your tab have a little greenish tint around the edges? Mines only ever so slight and there is no sign of issues (no touch issues, colour distortion etc) except when the tablet is showing a 'black' colour (i.e, at boot).aside from that it's awesome, I've been looking for something to replace my Chinese spyware phone for months and if I find another phone I like I can save up and use this as just a tablet.Only complaint is it's 8GB... didn't think about that enough! I installed GTA:SA and filled up my tab within a signal download! (Damn bloatware! 3GB +! ) anyway, it's great - I can call people, people can call me - I can text and I now have two simcards lol / numbers with a total of 4GB of data each month - very happy all around - although a case as you said wouldn't go amiss...

    Hello!

Yeah, mine has a bit of 'light bleed' around the edges of the screen, like you say, most noticeable at boot up - don't tend to see it at other times unless I look for it.

The 8GB is a bit stingy - some apps can be moved to an external memory card through the application manager - but not all. If this gets an update to Android 6, then I believe ALL apps can be moved to external memory, so that issue should hopefully go away. Apparently Samsung have confirmed the WiFi version is getting Android 6 and have started to roll it out in some countries, so it should only be a matter of time before the 4G one gets the same. They are notoriously slow to update OS's on their devices though.

Glad it worked out for you.

Hey Goopster, thank-you for taking the time to reply to my question so thoroughly - it's very kind of you.

I'm not sure if I / we should be worried or relieved by the 'light bleed' as you called it - as I mentioned aside from the issue itself everything seems to be 'fine'.

Fingers crossed for the android 6 update! Although judging from the end of your message it would seem it's almost certain to happen at some point? As, as I said I'm currently using this as a phone! (or phablet as people are calling them lol). I'm just anti-social enough that it works and am very happy I grabbed one.

Thanks again for the reassurance with the SIM card and all the other help, without people like you idiots like me wouldn't stand a chance!

    You are most welcome!

I think the screen showing the colour bleed at boot up is just a consequence of the screen type / design, I dont think it is anything to worry about. I have seen it mentioned on some other reviews of this device that I read prior to purchase.

I would imagine that this device will see an OS upgrade at some point. My previous phablet, a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, was always about six months behind every other device on the market as Samsung take some time to tweak their front end to support the new OS prior to pushing it to their devices. I can imagine this will likely be the same with this Galaxy Tab A 7.

All the best and Happy New Year.

Great deal with the data included. I use EE for my main phone and their 4gee double speed is super fast but expensive for the amount I get. When the contract is up I'm moving it to iD which I use for this spare phone. I can upload at 100Mb/s. Through the WiFi router (EE) I max out at 100kb/s upload speed. It all depends where you live which provider is best for you. I can't get any signal at all on O2, and Vodafone barely registers too. No cable in the area so no superspeed broadband from any company. That leaves 4g my only option for a decent experience online and so far EE & iD have been the best I've tried. In other regions of the UK that might be different. Saying [insert mobile provider] are garbage, don't go near them is poor advice if you're basing that solely on the weak/non-existent signal you received from them.

I know I'm showing my ignorance here but.. this is a tablet you can make calls on, right? Or, can you? I'm looking for something to replace my phone / replacement phone. I had a Samsung S4 but that broke - then I bought a Moto G4 off Amazon which was faulty and the "replacement" was stolen by one of their OWN logistics couriers... (NEVER again...!).

Now I'm broke and stumped. I basically need something that'll be okay for GPS and good battery / not fragile - I'm careful but a total idiot and accident prone. Any suggestions for phones / (or tablets that'll accept my sim card and allow me to make calls) would be greatly appreciated merry christmas all and happy new year.
