Others available at similar prices, what does it do that cheap headsets can't?

I don't own one anymore and haven't touched the cheap versions, but I believe that the advantage this has is the integration with the occulus store. It also has the built in controls and I would also imagine that the quality of materials (which translates to long term comfort and is something to seriously consider on VR) is higher.
On this particular version the USB flexibility is a bonus as well as the tight integration with Samsung phones if you own one.

Is it worth the premium over the cheaper headsets?

No eye deer. :D merry Christmas

The section on Mid-range headsets discusses the Gear VR. Although I sold the one I got with my S7 I've just ordered this new version. For science. :{

In case it helps anyone. I got one of these (the latest headset) from a seller on ebay (citiwide-online_uk) for £42ish
It came from Ireland but was (I guess) a chinese/korean import.
e.g. it works perfectly, seems genuine, just comes with bits of paper that I can't read!

Was looking at these ones on ebay from Ireland, I see the pic of the back of the box is all in Chinese, so I am a bit wary it could be a fake copy, any issues with yours?

I'm not an expert but it seems a genuine machine to me. It works with my S7 fine.
Only negative is ALL the writing on the box and the leaflets is in chinese/korean. But it's fairly easy to work out how to use.
