Same drive as that just £2 more per drive, perfect for those of us who don't need 2 drives

Remember to update the firmware in these:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bbs_msg_id=386

While other 2TB drives split their collection of bytes over four 500GB platters, Samsung's Spinpoint EcoGreen HD204UI F4 features three 667GB disks. This means the new platters boast the world's highest areal density at the moment.
The 3.5-inch F4 is intended to replace Samsung's four-platter F3 drive, and has otherwise similar specs. The drive is bolstered by a 32MB buffer, and the platters spin at 5400rpm, rather than the 7200rpm rotational speed of some other 2TB desktop drives

The new three-platter drive also cuts down on power consumption. The F4 eats 23 per cent less electricity in standby mode than its predecessor. The drive will remain quiet while it's ticking away, taking advantage of the company's SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies. The new Spinpoint HD204UI F4EG also supports Native Command Queuing

If Amazon is price matching go to Amazon. The last two drives I bought from Ebuyer were gray imports without warranty.

I've one 'Z4' drive from Scan, no Samsung warrenty. 2 drives from Amazon purchased 3 months apart have the full Samsung 3 year warrenty. Eclipses are also 'Z4' drives, I know where i'm buying from...

Actually, I've had a mix of Z4 and non Z4 from Scan. I now own 6 of these. They DO come with warrenty (all electrical have min 12 months in UK unless refurbished). I believe the warrenty is with the company themselves (12 month) in the case of the Z4 versions rather than the 3 year by Samsung.

Theres more on the warrenty status here:

Being Eclipse, I would recommend poking pins in your eyes instead as a more enjoyable experience! :-(

I would need to find the older thread for an exact date, but for drives manufactured after I think November last year, the firmware is already updated.

The one I bought from Amazon on 23rd Feb had a manufactured date of Jan 2011, so I'd say it's highly unlikely they would have any affected drives at this stage.

EDIT

Yep, it's November OK. Found this elsewhere:

"I have e-mailed Samsung, and they assure me that any drives with a build date after 11-2010 will have the new firmware pre-installed"

I'd ordered one from eBuyer just a few minutes before you posted this! I've always found eBuyer to be good for both orders and RMA's, and CityLink / ParcelForce (which seem to be their preferred couriers) are quite good for me and their depots are very near. This'll go nicely in my new HP MicroServer after some tweaking to get the HD204UI working in WHS.

later edit: having read the eBuyer Forums thread about this item, it turns out that the warranty might only be one year. Cancelled and re-ordered with Amazon.

I've got three of these, the two bought from Amazon have 3 year warranty with Samsung, the one bought from ebuyer doesn't :( eBuyer I guess would offer one years service, but I was a bit annoyed about it, I'd recommend Amazon right now.

Just invested in one of these via Amazon. Just awaiting its arrival now :)

Gotto agree with the above. Grey import, crap cs, one year warranty vs three. Go to amazon
#13
Yes - play safe and order from Amazon. I've just ordered 2 more (have 3 already - which do suffer from the firmware bug) so I'm a little scared right now :)
#14
Scan give you a 36 month warranty with the Z4's they sell.

Yes - but it *is* Scan... I've read numerous stories about how they wiggle out of warranty and say it is your fault.

Do these have lcc problems like the WD green?
also is the firmware problem a problem if you use it as a external?

thanks

Amazon review
I bought a pair of these to go in my NAS, but was unpleasantly surprised to notice they suffer from a 'Load Cycle Count' problem - which is fairly well publicised on the net I later found out. For those who haven't followed this, the WD Green disks implement a power saving feature where they ship the heads of the drive if the drive has been inactive for a few seconds. Linux-based NAS systems (which is most of them) write out small fragments of data every minute or so, which means the drive has to unship the drive head. You can query your drive's LLC through S.M.A.R.T. and see it ticking up by about 1000 a day.

The drives are specc'ed to a max lifetime LLC of 300k, so you can see where this is heading (groan). It's very poor that there hasn't been a fix for this straight off the bat after 3-4 months since it was first noticed, other than WD telling people to attach the drives to a windows pc and run wdidle.exe to 'lessen' the problem (this reduced the problem by about half).

No, comes in a specfic HDD box which is then in another outer box. Haven't powered it up yet though...

I've had a drive delivered in the previous packaging, and it's working fine in my Xbox 360 without issue. However, I also ordered a bunch of other stuff from Amazon so the Postie had to knock on the door. If it was the only thing ordered, it probably would have gone through the letterbox which probably would have damaged it as the letterbox is high up.

Yes the model number HD204UI/Z4 The Z4 means its grey import.

Are there any technical differences between the grey import and uk import?

Some people have suggested the Z4 aren't grey imports, but are in fact refurbs.

For my Scan F4(Z4) i've gone through a few of the countries where the drives might be cheaper, and none of them come up on the Samsung site as having warrenty for the drive.

My 2 came today. One has Z4 at the end of the part number. How do i check the warranty?
#32
Used this to check warranty:-
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/warranty.html
Both out of service area so not covered by Samsung warranty so sent them back to Amazon.
#33
Strange...the one I got from Amazon in Feb has 3 years ..??? [not a Z4]
#34
Amazon sent me Z4 too - though it came up with a 3 year warranty - what to do?
#35
The two I just received from Amazon were marked as Z4 too :(

So, Does anyone really know (and have documentary evidence) that these are imports?

Edit: I checked the serials on Samsung's website... bad news :( I am returning them to Amazon because they shipped the "wrong product"
S2HGJ90B10xxxx HD204UI 103 Out of Service area
S2HGJ90B10xxxx HD204UI 103 Out of Service area

Please contact the system's manufacturer for service.

Do NOT order: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-HD204UI-5400rpm-Internal-Drive/dp/tech-data/B0047O53K2/ref=de_a_smtd

I bought 3 of these drives last year from Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-EcoGreen-5400RPM-SATA-II-Internal/dp/tech-data/B0042SGDVG/ref=de_a_smtd <-- Those were UK 3 years warranty drives (I just checked, phew).
