12p/gb on the nose if you count the way HDD Makers count GB.

My 400gb Samsung is doing me just fine, also compared to £60 500gb variants also at 21p/gb, this is actually better value, because of the 32mb cache.

Ensure you have spare sata cable/sata power connectors for this.

this is sweet, well a 60 quid 500gb drive is the same 12p per a gb so its sweet

It's a good price for the capacity, shame its not a WD or Seagate.

Samsung are better than WD/Seagate in all the reviews....

I have 3x500G Samsungs, and have had no problems - they are fast & quiet
#5
good deal...shame i got my 500GB about 2 weeks ago....

Any reviews of these around?

they are the fastest drives on the market with up to 120mbps sustained - beat the wd raptors in some respects, beat the segate 7200.11 too (105mbps).

one word of warning - some sata controllers can't cope with the 750gb capacity - at least the sil3114 and intel ich5r, i've tried the spinpoint f1 and 7200.11 and neither worked for me, 500gb is fine though.

also you have to download some software from samsung to get it to work on a sata1/150 controller, as it defaults to sata2/300 and doesn't use jumpers like everyone else.

Great drives.

Mine runs nice and fast, and so cool. I've got a Maxtor, Seagate and Samsung. Here's my experiences with them.

The Seagate 7200.10 is a nightmare. Runs so hot, even though I've placed it in the coolest place. Plus it makes a skipping sound every so often. Quite a noisy drive. Usually runs around 45+C.

The Maxtor DiamondMax 10 is fine, average run of the mill performance. And has been very reliable despite what others say. Usually runs around 40-42C.

The Samsung though has been great. Nice and quiet and it's sat in the hottest place of all the drives, yet runs the coolest by far (and it's the largest). Runs at about 35C.

If I buy again I'll be going for a 750gb or 1Tb Samsung.

The PS3 uses the smaller hard drives that go in laptops.

I have this drive and tested it using a friends Silicon Image 3114. However, with the SiL3114 that I purchased, the controller boot software hangs after detecting the name of the drive and the channel it is connected to. It does not display the disk size. I have tried other ports and other cables. I have not tried a drive <= 500 GB.

I am not sure if it is the firmware version on the controller card or if it is the disk drive since I am able to use another controller cards (SATA 1 based on SiL3114 chipset and a SIIG PCI SATA controller based on SiL3512 chipset).

Any suggestions?
