sorry off-topic:

Does it need to have an optical-output connector for "true" 5.1's?

I currently plug in my PC's Dell 5.1 to my TV via a 3.5mm jack - so am I getting 'true' 5.1's?

Nope, probably just a stereo mix across all 5 speakers.

If only the they were wall mounted :( I dont have space for floor standing speakers

It doesn't look like there are any audio inputs, except maybe via the scart. If that's the case, a bit of a deal breaker for anyone that would be looking to put their console, or any other devices sound into the unit. Can anyone confirm?

Link to full specs below.

There is 1 audio input and 1 optical input.

I've never understood why you'd want an optical input for PS3.

Can't you just hook up the PS3 to an amp/receiver via HDMI to get the best sound?

Unfortunatly AV reciever/speaker systems with HDMI inputs are still fairly expensive, especially if you want HD audio. These all-in-one systems are a good cheaper alternative and optical is the best way of connecting them.

Sure you could, but not everyone (like me) wants to have to have a separate amp/receiver, especially when, assuming it has the inputs, you can just hook it straight up to you DVD Home cinema.

Thanks! Comet website disagreed hence why I thought it didn't. But this is definitive.

I have an old model of this and it can be a pain as you need an optical switch for multiple inputs. For this price you could probably get an cheap end of line Onkyo and some 5.1 speakers

Been using it for a day.

There is no HDMI input in this particular model, only output. So if you want to hook up your PS3 then optical is your best option in this particular case.

is optical the only way to get true surround sound from ps3 if its connected to tv through hdmi?
and is this the cheapest 5.1 optical surround sound system around?

Yes, optical cables are cheap and the PS3 already has the optical output on the back.

As for cheapest...you may find one a bit cheaper, but for a new model it's a good price.
