Looks good. Price on this was previously £299, so with the speakers included this looks to be a good deal at £239.

Heat added.

yes

Taken from the manual

Since HDMI connection supports both video and audio, you don’t have to connect an additional audio cable.

Right, I am a complete and utter noob when it comes to surround sound so am hoping one of you kind gents can maybe help me out a bit please.

The description says 5 x 120W output (so 600w total) but there are many older models available offering 1000W of output. Will the difference be significantly noticeable and is this only better because it has HDMI input?

I guess my question is, what makes this a good deal (remember I am noob) other than it looks pretty nice and is significantly below rrp?

Ohh excellent! Have had a close eye on the Sony ones but they are either OOS/discountinuted or jsut overly priced, also had my eyes on the Onkyo system as don't want to spend £££s down the seperates route just as the mo! This seems a good deal providing the system is good itself.

Hmm I think this does not have on board HD decoding, but it should ideally work with your device sending out audio as PCM. i.e PS3.

Watts is not really a important factor. 1000w will not be twice as loud as a 500w amp it will only be a few decibels louder, you would need 5000w amp to be twice as loud. Higher watts also mean it will be hotter.

I think Signal to Noise ratio and RMS is more important.

Thats what im not sure about though you get more for you cash with the samsung wouldnt the hd decoding be better from the onkyo hmmm dilema. One other factor for me is the size of that amp/reciver compared to the onkyo
#11
Looks like you can add an active subwoofer if you want. Anyone have any ideas how much a matching one would cost - I can't see a reference to a model number on the Samsung website?
#12
What does on board HD do? The main reason for this purchase would be to play video games and blu rays through PS3 and Xbox 360

It decodes Lossless True HD, DTS audio from blu rays, but thats not a problem as Your PS3 (and most blu ray players) can decode it then send it to the amplifier but it has to be via the HDMI cable and not Optical because it does not have the bandwidth.

will this play surround sound from VIRGIN+ and PS3?

will this play surround sound from VIRGIN+ and PS3?

Yes, but 99% of the programmes on Virgin broadcasts in stereo, but you can set the receiver to Dolby Pro Logic II and it will convert the stereo to 5.1 surround sound.
#16

another question:- what does 3d ready inputs mean?

basically means that it will support things like 3D Bluray Players, 3D Sky Box in the near future. also V1.4 Hdmi will allow higher resolutions, able to act as a Ethernet port, carry sound for the Tv to the Receiver via the Hdmi etc.

hmm not too sure, maybe I should email them. I wouldn't want to wait 2 weeks then to find out that they are not honouring it.

roadie;8383364
now does this do hd sound or not/

no, but most Blu ray players will decode then send it to the receiver. the audio quality will be the same as if the receiver did the decoding.
#29
so will this accept hd sound if so then i may get this
#30
roadie;8389633
so will this accept hd sound if so then i may get this

short answer yes. it will play HD sound as long as you connect the bluray player or Ps3 to the receiver using HDMI or the Multi Channel input, The Optical Input does not have enough bandwidth to pass though HD Audio.
#31
PS3 will decode the HD audio signal for you and output LPCM to the amp. Not that you would be able to tell the difference between HD audio and a good DTS 5.1 digital output anyway as the speakers aren't up to it. A pair of cotton buds are more likely to make a difference to your audio experience.

Havaing said all of that, this is a great starter kit for someone who wants to get into 'proper' cinema surround and will knock the socks of the all-in-one systems you normally see around this price point.
#32
Can anyone recommend a wall mount for these?
#33
Just ordered, thing it seems very reasonable priced for my first entry to a home cinema system!

Can anyone recommend a wall mount for these?

+1 - was just going to ask this

Thanks OP H&R - just what i was after.
#35
Now for the biggest noob question, does this come with speakers?
#36
does anyone know if this will tabe a component or composite input (from a wii) and send the picture to the tv via hdmi? or will you need a component cable from this to the tv as well in this case?

Thanks :)
#37
This might be a silly question but is there any place I can get speaker stands for these? I dont really fancy hanging them up but would some kind of generic speaker stand work ?
#38
I have a Sony DAV-DZ260 system. Do you think the sound quality of this would be much better?

That being said the AV connections alone make this an awesome buy. Thanks OP!
#39
I. Want. This. :(
#40
Odd, HMDI 1.4v yet not True-HD or Master Audio decoding. As you say not an issue depending on your soruce device but this would make it a no no for me. Good price for a budget system tho!
