Do you have the same approach when deciding to buy a car?

Avoid why?
If you compared most base model LCDs of the last 5 years that were similar size and all 1080p, they would all give basically the same picture.

So I ask again, avoid why?

Lots of good deals aren't the latest model, so what???

What an ignorant & elitist comment to make.

Craning neck at your friends house, be a friend and tell him/her the tv is wall mounted to high

Good luck finding it in stock at RS.

One store said they might get some, another said no one would get any more as it's end of line. (Ox & Chelt).

It's £399 in sainsburys, or £408 in comet, and curry's will price match to £404.

Well considering you can find this years model for not much more i would recommend going for that instead

Stop making me nearly buy things all the time - I really want a new tv but i dont need one and i cant afford one.

Heat unhappily added

Might seem a bit random. But is there any good deals out for 3D TV's like that samsung+bluray player that was 899 earlier in the month??? I missed out badly!!!

Best Buy has the 40" C580 back in stock @ £422
quidco @ 15% too :)

http://www.bestbuy.co.uk/product/1000121786/samsung-le40c580-40-lcd-full-hd-1080p-tv.aspx

However the 5 Year warranty is too expensive at Best Buy - unlike RS. If your happy with a 1 year warranty with 15% Quidco the C580 is a great deal me thinks.

I always assume RS deals don't exist for 95% of people who want one - probably 1 per branch, and that's if you're lucky.

Just a note, I have had 2 of the 'B5XX' range of TV's from samsung. Whilst the reviews are generally very good for this panel I have found that both the LE40B550 I bought from Currys and the LE40B530 I bought from Richer Sounds last year gave off an audible whine from the LCD panel when the backlight was set to anything but its highest setting (and even then it would on dark pictures). Maybe its just my hearing range, but a pal could hear it too. It was very annoying and made the TV unwatchable for me personally.

After returning the other two I picked up the LE40C580 from John Lewis and I've found the set excellent. The price is great for this panel, as long as you get one that doesnt make the noise!

Also I found Richer Sounds very easy to deal with when getting my refund.

Its interested that you mention this. The correct position for a TV is supposed to be eye level. So for a 40-50" TV, the ideal height should be such that the bottom of the telly is about 2'-'3 off floor level.

Now, I have never seen a TV mounted on a wall at that height. Ever. In fact, I think it would just look plain stupid were it to be mounted that low (even though that should be the correct height).

The only way to get around this problem would be to have some sort of adjustable height mechanism or a mechanism to angle the TV downwards.

My own TV sits on a TV stand, so I have no problems with craning my neck.

I'm wondering what others think on this subject?

My Samsung 40C580 is on the wall at the same height as it was on the stand. Don't get these people who put them half way up their wall.

I think bright star was just being helpful and pointing out a good deal for anyone who wanted a stand.

I personally agree with some of the later posters and can't understand why so many folks hang their TVs high.

HOT for anyone with a TV stand or not needing one ;)

Come on, surely more recent models offer deeper blacks, whiter than white whites and enhanced resolution- or at least that's what they tell us! Ie my joke, I entirely agree with you. There's a lot to be said for buying last year's models of whatever, and getting better value than the most up to date models particularly when current models of something only offer incremental improvements. On the other hand I hear Samsung's 2011 range looks really something but you'll pay accordingly.
