Great TV, I've got the 37" version, which I paid £479 for six months ago, can't go wrong for this price
#5
Think I'll look into this, seems pretty hot....

Great price, so tempted.

The Argos Clearance deal with the 42 inch Toshiba at £400 was better...but limited to Northerners, but when you factor in you save £50 and add 2 inches, and its probably a Samsung panel in there, this isn't that hot.

Just warm from me guys, unless im missing something?

Think you answered your own question there.....

Plus this set will play MKV and DivX so effectively is a blue ray player too

I'm in or just about to be in the market for a new TV and I guess I've got about a £500 budget.

Certainly won't be buying any DVDs but I would like to have the PC hooked up to the TV, even if for playback only but what is this internet TV thing ?

What is this I hear about TVs having USB ports but you having to fiddle the software to get them to play movies etc. ?

Any pointers as to how to make a TV purchase decision most welcome.

'Hi there and thanks for posting the deal. You seem to have forgotten to post links to the reviews, any chance you can edit post. Cheers'.

Fixed that for you. ;-)

Just given in and ordered after getting permission from the trouble and strife :whistling:

3.1415926 - you can change a couple of options in the menu system on this to get it to play movies / tv from the USB slot - normally it is only for music / photos. Apparently the change will let it play divX but also MKV which is / can be Blueray rips?!?!?

Not sure what you mean about "internet TV thing" but most LCD / Plasmas should have a VGA connection that will let you hook up laptops / HTPC's if they don't have HDMI (which would be better if they did as that carries sound too).

i've came accross this company yesterday, looking for the cheapest deal on this TV. i'm bit skeptical about them though as they havent got any good reviews recently

Can you clarify what you mean by changing a few options in the menu? I have this TV and its great although I had given up on being able to play any videos from the USB slot. Having that feature would be cool.

Unless I'm mistaken, "Internet tv" is a term uses when a TV has an Ethernet port or is WiFi enabled, you can install various widgets to the screen that shows you the weather or allows you to see faebook and what not on your TV. I think they now have iPlayer working too. Have a look on YouTube for Samsung Internet TVs

Same price at Dixons

not really; £479 for a slightly different model + out of stock

they may be ok now i had a dent in a set and kept it as i got fed up trying to get it collected --the courier tried to deliver with a single young bloke ---these guys bosses need sacking ..1 guy said he has to do 12 deliveries a day

What's this "shop" like? good or bad?

I've got a 37B550, using it as a primary monitor, also got an Xbox360 hooked on it. I'm really satisfied with the set: the A-MVA panel just looks amazing compared to the "old" TN displays. You've also got a chance to get this telly to play media files from your pendrive such as .avi and even .mkv.
Runs on Linux! :)

i thought they're using a courier to deliver it; if the tv is covered by a normal box over it then the courier wont take as much care as if they would if they knew the contents
companys like ebuyer are using the retail box as the normal box, whenever a courier delivers like this i havent had any issues because the courier people can see what they're handling. would be better if they used their own people to deliver it.

^^ would like to know aswell before i place a purchase

also would not getting an issurance be likely to become an issue? i'm contemplating about paying an extra £110 but would i really need it i.e. whats the chance of TV conking up "early" specially if i dont use it too often

Am I reading this correctly quote : " the courier tried to deliver it with a single young bloke " what has he being single got to do with it ??!!

Quote " 1 guy said he has to do 12 deliveries a day " I take it if it was your courier company then 1 delivery a day for each courier van / driver would be enough to keep you in business ??

think you will find most courier drivers make anything from 40 upwards deliveries a day.

i have fairly limited knowledge of the first two questions, but lots of tv's are being released now with ethernet portas allowing you to directly hook them up to the internet, think this is mostly to do with updating their firmware and such but dont think you can just use it to stream movies or anything yet, not that ive come across, pretty much any set you can just plug a laptop or PC into allwoing any playback,

with regards to the USB port different manufacturers and sets allow different formats of video for playback, some sets can be hacked to enable the usb ports to playback those which they wouldnt normally be able to, such as many of the lower spec LG sets 2000 and 3000 series, if you buy a higher spec set however most formats of video playback will be enabled and should require no tinkering

when trying to purchase a tv id work out what your going to use it for most and what environment you have got it in this dictates really what you should get and what size, in a bright room using the tv for gaming you would want an lcd, whereas a darker room for blu ray watching a plasma would be better, if your mainly for watching standard tv do u live in a freeview area? if not freesat would be important, do you have sky HD or are you going to be doing a lot of standard def viewing......

sooo many thinks to take into consideration but you can really over think all this, personalyl id start on reevoo.com gives great consumer reviews of tv's and works pretty well as a basic price comparison site to guide you on pricing of the set!

ive got the ue40b7020 led tv with the internet thingy and it can connect to you tube, flickr, yahoo news, finance and weather. and its got a texas hold em poker game and a few other useless widgets.... its pretty limited at the mo, but i expect more will be added in the future. just be careful if you want to connect via wifi (with my model anyway and i assume it will be with most) you have to buy a sammy dongle which costs about £50. i hook mine up via ethernet as my router is right next to the tv.

Hi

First post, was thinking very seriously about buying this product and agree the reviews look great.

I have just checked out the reviews of the company however, and lets just say they are not as great

I don't think you can play videos on the newer firmware?
#28
That's right. I've got the same one from Dixon a month ago. After discount was similar price. Amazing quality compared with my Loewe MIMO 32".

You CANNOT play MKV using the USB port on the newer firmware. Mine has the newer firmware and the options that you are supposed to change are simply not there. Not bothered as I plug my PC into it and run MKV from that.

My friend got this back in December from Macros - it's an ok tv, bit of pixelation on fast images - not the best but pretty good for the price.

Back in stock at Dixons - £479.99 + 3% quidco - makes this £465.60

http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-le40b551a-40-full-hd-lcd-tv-02452238-pdt.html

Don't know of any discount codes for Dixons at the moment

Got this TV from Amazon Warehouse (bit the bullet and chanced it) for £425 and got lucky with lack of visible damage, awesome TV well worth the money.
#32
Anyone else ordered this TV from PRC?

OP did you get one?
#33
I've ordered it as well. They called me yesterday about extra cables and extended warranties. Not sure what the ETA is.
#34
This TV has an irritating fact about it: Samsung sell the same set with wildly different electronics, and even different panels, all under the 40b550 model code. The quality varies wildly as a result - some are the bargain of the year, a really excellent set with extremely accurate colour. Some are quite poor.
#35
What information are you basing that on arfster?

@ Roddie, let me know how you get in if you don't mind mate. Are you going to test if yours can play divX or mkv through USB with the hack?

i own this TV for a while now and it is amazing .. every time i get my mates over they complain about their TV is s*** after watching mine ... I am not bothered playing anything from USB as i simply hook my laptop in the TV and i rather have my laptop 2nd monitor (XP option) resolution set correctly to do the trick..

I also have wii hooked up and it is awesome with sports resort... :whistling:

you can refer avfoums.com where you will find some useful info for enabling other formats and stuff..
For example - http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-led-lcd-tvs/1229436-samsung-b550-enabling-mkv-divx-xvid-playback-part-2-a.html

Long thread in avforums.

You can tell in the full model code which have the better quality internal electronics....

(the xxu models are the better ones).

The panel types is a sticker on the side, I think SQxx is the good one, but not sure.
