What about the samsung LE32C580 at bestbuy? £352.99 with cashback bringing it down to just over £300.

I can't believe it doesn't support 24p. Enough to put me off

On the negative side, the Samsung LE40C580 lacks true 24p support, which is the only major flaw the Series 5 suffers from. During testing, the LE40C580 accepted 1080p/24 video signal but it was converted to 60p via 2:3 (Telecine Pull-Down)

You do know a lot of cheap LED sidelit TV's have problems (I hate when they call them 'backlit' when they aren't), like bleeding at the edges, darkness in the centre of the screen, or the so called 'flashlight' effect? So you're often better off sticking to a good CCFL backlit screen. Only the matrix LED backlit screens with localised dimming are really superior in every way, and you won't find one for anywhere near £500.

The only benefit to a lot of these LED sidelit screens is that they look impressively slim, so are well suited to wall mounting.

As for 100Hz, again, this is a very hit and miss feature. I'd rather get a good performing 50Hz screen than a 100Hz screen that gives that annoying 'sped up' effect. A lot of people go as far us turning their TV's down to 50Hz intentionally, even when the TV supports higher (myself included).

If I had a choice of one of the 2 you posted, or the Samsung in the OP, I'd go for the Samsung every time. It's a superb screen for the price (plus the media playback on the Sammy is superb).

Id buy one myself, but my LG 42LH4000 is still serving me well enough for now.

I posted this a week ago but had a problem with the link, http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-le40c580-40-lcd-full-hd-108/819870#comments

They then run out of stock......my post went down like a dead squid! I'm happy your getting more heat but I can't believe this deal isn't hotter.

It has great reviews, nothing comparable at this price, I took delivery of mine today plus Quidco tracked immediately. £360 - BARGAIN IMHO! You can obviously pay another £300 more for the Sony Bravia KDL40EX503U which would be the only other TV I would stack up against this one.

I've spent the last few months looking at 40inch LCD's and no matter whetre I've looked this one always seems to get a mention.

If you want the tv before Xmas don't order off them. I ordered one about 2 weeks ago, received order confirmation of despatch on the 9th for delivery on the 10th and payment taken. Today I phoned DHL about the parcel tracking number that was emailed to me by Best Buy, was told that they have not got it and the item was still with Best Buy. Just got off the phone with Best Buy to be told the item is still in there warehouse awaiting despatch and they cannot give me a delivery date. To say the least I'm not an happy customer and will think twice about ordering from them again.

Best Buy is a new electrical retailer over here a bit like Currys (I believe they originated in USA). to get cash back you have to sign up to quidco and link to the retailer from there site.

They also generally have lower power consumption.

I should also commend you for talking about "LED vs LCD" without saying a load of inaccurate ****.

The question is, how likely are you to receive it before christmas. For example DHL are not commiting to any further pick-ups in scotland this week. And with more snow forecast for Thu-Fri it's a big gamble if you need it before christmas. Thanks for the info regarding the courier as this has stopped me from buying a cracking deal. I hope you all receive as expected. Heat added.

Picked up this very TV last week from Richer Sounds, few quid more I know at £429 but the 5 year guarentee is only £42, asked John Lewis to do a price match which they did but they took so long to get back to me I took myself off to Watford and picked it up, if you call the store they will put one by, - o and fantastic TV by the way

Can the lack of true 24p support not be fixed with a firmware update in the future, if Samsung do decide to create one?

Yes it can, this tv does have 24p support it just does not pull it off properly hence "not true 24p" my brother has an older samsung that had terrible problems with 24p sources, a firmware update sorted it out and its superb now.
#29
What are the chances of Samsung releasing such an update then?

The c580 is 50hz and the Sony 100hz!

Watch out 3 times they have failed to turn up to deliver, outrageous. customer service is non existent. they fail to phone back and keep you on the line for up to an hour.

you pays your money you take your chances.
#32
True........but is it worth £300 more? I've read mixed reviews, I couldn't justify spending the additional money (and to the other half).

I take nothing away from the Sony, its a fantastic TV which has won loads of awards.......but for £360, this is a great TV - I've just set it up this evening and the picture is stunning, and I've just moved up from a 32" Sony.
#33
yes usa, a bunch of cowboys, no support, do not deliver, fail to turn up (3 times now and counting) customer service useless. fail to phone back when they promise. Do I need to go on.

What's them being an American company got to do with it?

If the same product was on sale for the same price at one of the DSG Retail Group Co.'s and Amazon most members would order from Amazon!

Maybe we should ban all Best Buy deals!!

Yeah I got mine from Best Buy. There's various different panels Samsung have used for this same model, you want the SQ01/SP01 model. That's the 1 I got from Best Buy and the main 1s that are sold in the UK !

There's a thread over on AVForums which is very helpful :

Hi Jake,

The 24p "bug" exists but tbh it's only really there if you go searching for it. To any normal person, you won't even notice it. Samsung can easily fix this with a firmware update anyway so don't pay attention to the scare mongering online. Once you get the TV you'll see how good it is.

PS3/Xbox/Sky HD all look fantastic on it. My set looked OK out the box, I didn't have to change any settings but I turn on "Game Mode" everytime I play PS3/Xbox. It's a bit annoying that you need to go into the menu to turn this on, wish there was a single button on the remote because I switch quite a bit lol, but that's a tiny problem for me. It's probably not even a problem for you since you bought your mum it and I doubt she games much !

For the money we've paid(360ish after cashback), the TV is an absolute bargain.

Looks like this company's a mess. Waiting 10 days for delivery and item hasn't left their warehouse. No call,, no email, customer services polite but useless!
